    NROTC orientation swim

When I went through we had to swim a mile in flight suit, boots, helmet, and uninflated LPA. It was very tough. Perhaps that's changed.

    Webb Quote

The hard, cold truth is that when the services began accepting women in combat roles in order to appease different whiny groups, the toughest parts of training and readiness were discarded. Two standards for strength and PRT ("It's not 'fair' to make women do that many pushups or run that...

    ALL HANDS article: Maine SERE

Looks pretty cozy, actually. We did SERE in the Mojave Desert. 130 degrees daytime, 30 degrees at night. We were baked and flash-frozen. Had just a flight suit and half a parachute for gear, plus our survival vest stuff. No shade, no shelter, just open desert. Only thing to eat was prickly pear...

    Running sucks

Sadly, only running -- with appropriate rest days -- decreases your run time. And worse, running sucks and never gets better. It is simply ongoing misery. There is no "runner's high" -- that is just another lie from the sneaker companies. I grit my teeth through AOCS and then 21 years of...

    How are my chances?(Juvy history)

The Naval Service has great respect for persistence. Don't take no for an answer. I had to apply three times before I got a vision waiver. Finally, the doctor wrote "Motivation +++++++++++++++++" on my physical exam form (I still have a copy of it). Four months later I got the waiver.

    depth perception

The Navy uses a weird "floating circles" depth perception test that some have trouble with. It gave me a problem along the line despite two (2) opthalmologists (MDs) telling me by depth perception was fine and that the Navy test is the one that is unrealistic. <P> There is a fix. Return of the OV-10 for USMC?

Wouldn't be the first time. After the Navy retired the SP-2H Neptune, the Army took some, converted them to the AP-2H attack aircraft, gave them to some old-as-dirt Army warrants, and had a merry old time harrassing the Viet Cong. We roomed with some of these guys (The Black Cats) in Vietnam...

Needs of the Navy. My AOCS class (20-68) had 70 of us. The class was so big they broke it into two classes, with half having to stay in INDOC BATT for two weeks. Bummer. There was one class a week every week back then.

    P-3 Fleet Squadrons

it would make more sense than having 200 P-3's in Whidbey in my opinion, plus on my submarine deployments Japan was always a good time. That would be a good trick. There are approximately 153 flyable P-3Cs left in the US Navy. Last check, 54 of these were gard down for reqinging or serious...

    P-3 Fleet Squadrons

What are the chances of retiring as a commander without command? Pretty good. In the Reserves there is one VP command billet for every twelve or so O-5s. Most CDRs do not get command -- you get to spend 4-6 years eating donuts in a Vegetable Training Unit slowly going insane in order to make...

This will be the source of endless amusement

P-3s are the way to go, but I'm prejudiced. The big plus is not having to live aboard the boat. When I went through training, every one of the prior enlisted wanted P-3s. They knew about living afloat vs. living at home. I, as a starry-eyed ensign, wanted VAH (heavy attack -- A-3s or A-5s)...

    Wearing glasses w/ a helmet

I wore glasses under my flight helmet for my career in P-3s with no problem. Glasses present two problems: 1. They do not fit under O2 masks -- in my VT10 T-1 flights they rode up on top of my O2 mask. One reason I chose VP vs VA was not to have to wear a mask and all the rest of that jet...
