    Places to Live in Norfolk

More info? Howdy folks, I'm coming up for orders soon... as part of the process I need to figure out what I want to do and where I want to go. I've got the "what" part figured out, but I need some more info to make an educated decision on "where". I am thinking pretty hard about...

Oregon Aero liner vs. Gentex X-Liner

I wore a zeta liner for about a year and a half... it was great at first, but once I started wearing NVGs it got pretty uncomfortable. I switched to the gentex and will never go back. Gentex is more comfortable (for me), cooler, and has silver threads woven in for odor control. Plus they...

    Guamanian Cell Phones?

Purdue, I would say the only reason you'd need a cell phone is if you're in a position like docpup. Once you get here you'll see that not having a cell is a luxury. If you do get a phone you'll likely have some reception issues in spots. It's hit or miss from what I have heard and...

    Pme

This is an interesting topic and I'm glad to see it discussed. When I look at the requirements for advancement (PME/JPME/Masters) and also consider things like optempo, dissociated tours, IAs, etc, it really makes me wonder what my future in the Navy will look like. Department head selection...

    Is this rumor going around?

No. There are two ways in/out of where SERE is. One route is north and the other is south. Of the two ways out, one was closed due to fire and the other was in danger of being closed. The OIC didn't want us to get trapped at SERE, not to mention the risk of fires spreading to where we...

    Pilot Slot Guarantee?

If you commission via OCS you will know your job in the Navy before you go. You are not obligated to serve if you don't graduate from OCS if I remember correctly. There are exceptions, but generally that is how it works. As others have said, look around on the site. Search for BDCP and OCS...

    TH-57 fleet grounding

Our MMCO saw that aircraft and from what he told me it sounds pretty impossible to imagine how they could skirt this under the rug as anything other than a class A. The story I got made it sound pretty freaking bad.

    Is this rumor going around?

I went to SERE twice. It sucked. Bad. The first time we were evac'd out on the day we would have been taken to the camp. Even though I only did the camp portion once, I can assure you from personal experience that going through any portion of SERE more than once is completely miserable. I...

The Great Flight Jacket Thread (wearing/buying Leather, NOMEX, WEP jackets/patches)

Also, if you don't want to wear the outer gore-tex layer the polartec fleece jacket and/or vest looks warm. I tried and tried to get the PRs to order me a set. When they finally came in I was told, "Oh, the wing ordered those and you can't have any." If only I had a key to that connex box...

Negative reactions to the Nasal Spray, Flonase

I use Flonase and haven't had any problems. If you just start taking it you'll have the bloody nose problem for a few days, but it goes away. The same thing happens if you stop taking it. I don't know about it being a miracle drug, but it definitely works for me.

    Insider Scoop on Navy OCS

Good post. Thanks for the insight. I think the take-away from your experience is to know and understand that OCS will be difficult, but if you've got the motivation you'll make it. There was one particular comment about not going to OCS as SNA just because you want to fly and think the Navy...

    HS-14 to San Diego???

The guy who told you that originally did know what he was talking about. He may not have known the details, but HSC-8 will be taking over in Japan and HS-14 will come back to San Diego to transition to the Sierra. I was told this would happen in 3-4 years, if that matters to you. It shouldn't...

Searching for a date to get married

Do this (we did). If you're going to get married anyway, it's by far the best option. You can figure out a date after you've progressed some more in flight school. As far as an actual church ceremony goes, don't expect more than a weekend. It's EXTREMELY difficult to plan something like...

    Advice, Buying a Truck

I drive a 2007 Tacoma. This is my fourth pickup (second Tacoma) and I am sold on Toyota. The only reason I traded my old '04 for the '07 was to go from extended cab to double cab. I have no personal experience with Nissan products, but I would definitely advise you to go with a Toyota based...

I think the service dress khakis look good and would be a lot easier to keep clean than my choker whites. On what occaisions would this uniform be appropriate to wear? Pretty much all I wear now is regular khakis for SDO and a flight suit for everything else. If there's a retirement or other...

    HT Question

I agree with everything else that has been posted so far. My personal experience was that I studied a LOT more, but also found the material to be generally easier to handle. Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

No one flies with them unless they're on a CATMEX. I don't think people go so far as to actually put the visor on during flight, but I don't see anyone wearing/using them on an every day basis.

Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

Only the IP's have them right now because none of the students are far enough into the new syllabus to have needed them yet. We've got a couple of block III's and the IP's have been doing work with FLIR and Hellfire, which apparently require the LEP lens. I'm a couple of months away from that...

Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

The LEP visor they're using here is kind of a yellow/green... actually not that far off from Gatorade color. Maybe it's high definition also, kind of as a side effect? They're used at the FRS for preventing eye damage due to reflections from your own equipment. Obviously we don't face enemy...

Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

Yes, the Hush Kit is a specific product available from Oregon Aero and it does include new ear cups (or maybe just extra insulation, can't remember) and the synthetic leather ear cup seals. The PR's at South Field will give you the ear cup seals if you ask for them, but the complete hush kit...

    TH-57 Upgrade News (EFIS)

It's definitely not more advanced in avionics than my aircraft. (MH-60S) Recently coming out of the TH-57 and learning a new glass cockpit, I think this new system is a great idea and will make it easier for the Navy's future students to transition into MH-60R/S platforms. I think if I had...

    Hearing Protection

About the lip lights... all studs get them at initial check-in. We turn in the helmets from T-34s and get helo helmets. Included in all of the goodies are the liplight and NVG equipment. There was a time when gear issue was out of lip lights (and $ for everything else) but I think they have...

    Hearing Protection

I agree. I went ahead and paid out of pocket for a Zetaliner (impossible to get from PRs if you're a student) and I wanted to get a hush kit as well. The PRs told me that if I had one when my helmet went in for inspection they'd rip it out. I'm only a couple of weeks away from finishing the...

    Hearing Protection

I asked them about it several months ago... was told "they're not crashworthy so you can't have them..." Let me know if you find out anything different. I think we'll have better luck in the fleet. The policy here seems to be to only give the students the bare minimum.

VFR Flight Plan Route of Flight

VNAV in primary is best described as "GPS Direct." You will plan the route with all of the checkpoints... but I bet your IP puts the final destination in the GPS and you follow the needle. He'll ask you to point out where you are on the sectional, but you probably won't actually fly the route...

    BAH Pay with BDCP

I know of a girl who was BDCP and used her home of record for BAH purposes instead of her duty station. She was better off financially for doing it. Our recruiter didn't have a problem with it so it couldn't have been that out of the norm.

    qualifing weapon at Naval OCS

I'm just happy to see they are letting you get your quals at OCS now. When I went through we got to shoot, but no scoring and no opportunity for quals. It was a fun day compared to the regular OCS life, but I wish I had been given the chance to actually get qual'd.

Yes, that is one of the major arguments against such a system. People will attempt to get by with less training and thus proficiency and safety will suffer.

    User Fees

Howdy all, I keep reading about the FAA and how they want to impose user fees to fund the ATC system vice keeping everything supervised by Congress (the way things work now). There is quite a bit of debate on how exactly the FAA and ATC system should be funded. From what I have learned so...
