When should I start my package?

I would extend if you are looking at ECP (you may not even need to do that). The board meets 3x a year once for each OCC class. If you get out and then apply you may have much steeper odds for selection. Just my $.02 but selection rates for OCC (which you'd be applying for) have been...

    Marine corps marathon

If you want to run just go out and run it. No, you aren't going to disadvantage the official participants. (What is 1 more person when there are already 25k out there?) And no, the "staff" are not going to kick your ass. Most are volunteers anyway and wouldn't have the sac to challenge a...

    Getting medals pinned on

Personal awards (i.e. medals for personal conduct vs. group awards like the NDSM) are usually awarded in a public forum to recognize the person before their peers. Would it be career suicide to blood-wing someone getting their GCM or a NAM? Of course. Do people still get their chevrons...

    Scholarship -PLC-OCS Im lost

Brandon, repost this in the Marine forum. I think you can get an Air contract, but even if you can't MOSs are NOT determined during ROTC but rather TBS (with the exception of Air and Law contracts). So even if you don't get an air guarantee you can still compete for an Air MOS during TBS...

What equipment is the marine rifleman assigned?

What is the point of a hand-held sub? What is the point of expending a lot of inaccurate small caliber ammuntion? I agree there is a problem with the M9 and the 9mm round. There is a reason that Force Recon uses the MEU (SOC) .45 9mm doesn't have the knock down power needed for an...

    Mechanic (during enlistment)

Well, I guess the best way to get assured you will be be a turbine mech is to join a reserve squadron that only flys turbine planes. Other than that you are at the "needs of the Marine Corps". Even then you could end up a structural or hydralic mechanic. Good luck.

    getting in to 184

Thanks for the gouge. Washing out of P-cola must have been what I was warned about. Out of curiousity, do people often drop their Air option and is there any negative ramifications for doing so?

    getting in to 184

Esday--I've heard that if you drop your Air contract the do not consider your MOS preference and instead put you in the MOS in least demand to really discourage this practice due to the high need for aviators.

    CMC's Reading List

I didn't care for Caputo's book, though I did enjoy Webb. I'm not sure if it is on the CMC list but "The Nightengale's Song" by Richard Timberg is an excellent read. Basically chronicles the lives and careers of various Iran/Contra people to include Webb, McFarland, Oliver North, John...

    Curious as a cat...

As noted above, there are exceptions but in most cases I would think you will not have a competitive application until you have had a chance to prove yourself in the fleet (so probably 6 months after finishing all schooling). The reason for this is that you need to have your command's...

    Curious as a cat...

Definately not true. Especially since it can take from 6 - 10 years to pick up that rocker. There is no official policy on minimum enlisted grade for application to a commisioning program.

Is a 260 a good pft going into OCS?

It is indeed a radio. They are usually called "Prick 119's" (or Prick 77's or Prick 105's or whatever the radio set's model number is). Not exactly PC, but that is what people call them.

Is a 260 a good pft going into OCS?

Also, scoot your heels into your butt and try to curl yourself up vs. "folding" at the waist. Talk to your OSO or AOSO about how far down you need to go to still be considered a crunch. It isn't as far as you think . . .

    Air Medals

I agree with Phrogdriver in both that it is not a gimme and that the USN CAR in most cases is (excepting specwar and riverine activities). On to a different, related subject: a guy I know who was an enlisted Marine aircrewman (gunner) in Vietnam has a shadow box containing (among other...

    On Universities

Commo1 said it all--it is on the package and therefore fair grounds for the board to review and judge by. To those who think it is BS, well the whole process is riddled w/BS. To wit: in the boards eye, a former enlisted with a 4 or more years of time in the fleet and who happens to have a...

    OLD AGE

Anyone know anything about age waivers for ground officers? Sorry this is off-topic a bit but it is a huge deal for me. Here's why: I am a prior enlisted and talking with a recruiter to re-enlist active duty in the hope of being accepted via ECP. I'm currently 31 and turning 32 in October...

    Confusion about joining Marine Corps

Why do a not flying rotation or two? Prolly cause you will be a Marine, first and foremost. Ever hear the expression "Every Marine a rifleman"? It is very true. Doing non-flying tours may not make you a better pilot from a technical skill POV, but it makes you a better Marine. I'd argue...

    Blisters

Use a bunch of foot powder on a bare foot. Next put on your black issue dress socks. Splash a bit more foot powder over the sock. Then put on a pair of cushion sole socks over the dress socks. The black socks will act as a second, more slippery skin (preventing blisters) while the wool socks...

    IOC before API

I think what Splinter meant was that it might be prudent to save the "Ooh-rah! Wouldn't it be grand!" stuff until after TBS. I haven't been to OCS or TBS, but as a Marine radioman I did some humping in my day and know that infantry life isn't all John Wayne guts and glory stuff. I would...

    Age Waivers

I'm located in the midwest, 9th MCD. They are telling me that the district commander is not signing any age waivers at this time, no exceptions. I'm 31 now. I think this is a little unfair considering I was an active duty Marine for 4 years (awarded a Navy Achievement Medal and 2...

    Age Waivers

I'm trying to look at some things demographically and was interested if anyone on the list currently applying for OCS on an age waiver. If so, I'd like to know: 1. what class/option are they applying for (OCC, AIR, LAW, PLC, etc.) 2. what will be their age when commisioned 3. are they...

    references?

What do the reference forms currently look like? I applied to OCC for the summer of '01 and a friend showed me the form he received from my OSO. Basically it was a multiple choice type deal where you rate the person from 1-4 on various traits. There was no written section or area for any...

    Knee Injury

I had a similar problem that peaked when I ran a marathon on very little training (stupid, I know, but I'm a Marine so go figure). Basically, the problem seemed to be an imbalance in muscle strength between the inner and outer quad causing the knee cap to track incorrectly. Here's what worked...

    Ground Openings for 184

Hobbs77 or anyone else . . . any idea on the number of ground slots as a % of total? Futher, any idea on the break-down of MOS's? (i.e. 18% 03XX, 10% 08XX, 9% 04XX, etc.)? Many thanks.

    Ground Openings for 184

Anyone have any idea of Ground will be re-opened for OCC class 184 (Oct '03)? I realize this is an Air forum but I am at a loss for info and you all seem a well informed bunch. I'm a prior enlisted Marine but at 31 am perhaps a little long in the tooth for Air. Thanks

    Pipeline Percentages

Quick question for you mcbride_t_m or anyone else -- do you know what the max age for Marine Corps aviation is? I saw somewhere that there is a Navy reg stipulating you must be commisioned prior to 31 but is it the same in the Marines? I am a prior enlisted Marine and will be 31 in Oct. The...
