    ACL Tear on Op Tour

Hoping for some good advice/process here. Recently checked into an op fly tour covered under tricare remote (no MTF). The night before checking in I tore my ACL, being seen by civilian ortho. Seeking advice on if this falls under limdu and if that’s the case, will this result in a PCS...

    Just selected, and got....

Don't worry you'll pretty much never see the P-8 dudes in the pattern in Whidbey. GPWS call outs on every downwind.

    Just selected, and got....

VP-4 (I'm there now) completes P-8 transition May 5th. We have been receiving new P-8 pilots and NFO's from VP-30 since we arrived to Whidbey last September. With VP-47 about to begin, and VP-9 right after them the chance of getting P-8 in Whidbey exists, but there are far more P-3 spots than...

ADS-B in Navy / Marine Aircraft?

We have 2 TCAS planes that are TCAS and fully ADS-B capable. It's pretty awesome to see in action, my understanding is the ADS-B flags we get in the P-3 are a software block for ADS-B.

    Ipad

Foreflight on the Mini is the only way I fly these day. I have no issue reading the charts or plates. Pinch to zoom works great. Highly advise the Wiley X gloves if you are gonna use an iPad. My supply issues those now.

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

Said no one ever. Maybe many years ago, today it's very tired iron. The 6 hour+ preflight is a daily occurrence. Do we complete the mission...yes....after hours of troubleshooting and multiple plane swaps.

    foreflight military for intl flying

I used the firelight app on my last deployment overseas. The new DOD subscription is pretty awesome. It gives access to the entire FLIP. It was quite helpful to use for planning. The geo-referenced approach plates (when combined with a Bad-Elf GPS or the like) and field diagrams were pretty...

    USN Djibouti-what to expect

Step 1. Become a wardroom member there. Step 2. Profit. Avoid the midnight Djiboutian breeze (aka trash pit fog), and go to Monday night mid rats, it's the best meal you'll have there.

    Golden Car Wings

I messaged him a few months ago, he said he would see if he had any left due to multiple PCS's, but I never heard anything after that.

Don't think they are still available, I've been looking for a set of single anchor types myself.

On and Off Base Housing at NAS Jax

I classed up immediately when i got back from my desert "camping trip." So far VP-30 is a good place for a student, and OP is pretty family friendly area. Best of luck to you in the move, the move company that handled my class left a lot to be desired.

On and Off Base Housing at NAS Jax

I just moved to Jax, and currently live in Orange Park off Argyle. The commute in the morning can be bad, but within a week I've learned a few shortcuts that avoid the main road and my commute is now about 10-15 mins. Orange Park is a pretty nice area, and the Town Center is full of restaurants...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

    New Initiatives from SECNAV

http://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2008-05/worse-crime-mistake A great article that pretty much sums up my feelings for most of this policy. I'm not a fan of the intrusive leadership. Not that I support showing up to work drunk, but on the odd-ball chance someone shows up and turns a...

    New Initiatives from SECNAV

Was showing up drunk to duty section an honest to god problem? I've only seen it one time and that person was handled accordingly. This seems like another typical Navy knee jerk reaction. I imagine this doing more harm than good, can you imagine duty section turn over on a Carrier where...

ABOUT TO ENLIST BUT WOULD LIKE TO BE AN OFFICER FEEDBACK PLEASE

HUMINT is clandestine human collection of intelligence through interpersonal communication (poli sci nerd moment, I took an intelligence class in college). While there MAY be a few Navy Officers that do that, most intel O's I've met spend most of their time time in an office or doing power...

ABOUT TO ENLIST BUT WOULD LIKE TO BE AN OFFICER FEEDBACK PLEASE

I recommend doing a search on this, it has been asked several time. Short answer is (as a prior) don't enlist with expectations to commission, it is a long and difficult path. Best case scenario if you enlisted you're looking at 4+ years until you have enough quals and experience to be...

    FY13 STA-21 Applicants

Very true. 1. You will all see at NSI there is a diverse group of people selected. There WILL be people who will make you questions the validity of the selection process. 2.If you can't help each other as peers how will you help your junior sailors!? I had copies of previous selectees...

    Sta-21 board questions

    FY12 STA-21 Applicants

As was said they "emphasize" technical majors. That said there are plenty of non-technical majors that make it. I'm a poli sci major, commissioning next week, I'm as non-technical a major as it gets, it can be done. Best of luck.

7.62x39 AR upper - any experience?

I recommend Aim surplus, I've bought a few guns through them, A+ customer service. http://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.aspx?groupid=208&name=New+Long+Guns They have a century arms AK with folding stock for $350, or a WASR for $430. If you want a M4gery, I went with http://www.model1sales.com/...

7.62x39 AR upper - any experience?

While I don't have experience with 7.62x39, I bought an ar upper from Palmetto State Armory in 5.45x39 another commie round. It has its ups and downs. Ammo is MUCH cheaper. That is the major positive. On the down side: the cheap ammo is corrosive and dirty, and you are limited on your parts...

    Russian Ammo Thread

I use Russian cheap-o Commie ammo in my Mosin and an AR I built in 5.45x39. I personally have had zero problems. I'm using the bulk spam-can corrosive primer rounds. The casing *should* not cause any problems, but the ammo is extremely dirty. Even when I run brown bear or wolf through my AR...

    FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

Mostly a mix, but this year they cracked down quite a bit to make it more of a "bootcamp" environment. It's not nearly as hardcore as OCS, but not nearly as slack as LDO/CWO. Really just the first 2-3 weeks are the true suck, with getting beat by RDC's, but even that is a joke for priors (we...

    FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

No there is not plenty of time for the application after selection. With MANY colleges it takes bare minimum one month to hear back. Last year (as with every other year) there were people who could not get orders cut because they college took 2 months or more to send acceptance letters back...

    FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

    FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

Every year people pester the ppl @ STA-21 about the messages date, and every year they will tell you a time frame of mid-oct, they will NOT tell you an exact date the message will come out, they NEVER have and probably never will. Look at previous year's threads, every year ppl constantly email...

    FY10 STA-21 Applicants gather round!

Read NAVADMIN 121/09, every year they end up throwing out almost a 3rd of the packages submitted due to incorrect format or ineligibility.
