    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

Yes, just make sure you have all of the required documentation. It should be up on the OCS website, and you should get a pretty thorough brief from your OR before you head out about what you should take with you. Make sure you take originals or certified copies with you.

Sand Up Your A** . . .S.U.Y.A. It's the name of one of the few sand pits they had in Newport. The SUYA, the Rose Garden, and the Cookie Jar if I recall correctly. Basically, you get to go play around in the different sand boxes at your Drill Instructor's discretion.

    Household Goods move HHG question

You're TDY while at API. If you can't survive on 600lbs for a couple months, you may need to re-evaluate how you're living. Just finish API, and when you're done, you can have everything moved down down to Milton/Pensacola. This is the way the system works man. According to the Navy, you're...

    Tomorrow is the Big Day

You can take your paternity leave (your choice) from OCS. You'll take your 10 days, and if you have any additional days, you may be able to take those as well. You'll roll back one class, and move right along. Only downside, your graduation date gets rolled back three weeks. There was...

    Tomorrow is the Big Day

It depends on your designator and the needs of the Navy. I know people that selected Supply in my OCS board, and they didn't go to OCS for another year (boarded in NOV, and they had to wait for the NEXT fiscal year to start up). So, be ready to go in three months (my case) or be ready to wait...

    Tomorrow is the Big Day

It is amusing, reading this thread. I was sitting in your shoes almost 2 1/2 years ago. Doesn't seem like that long ago. Best of luck to all of you, and for those that are selected, congratulations. For those of you that aren't selected, kick some ass, and resubmit with a stronger...

On and Off Base Housing at NAS Jax

Thanks Gator, Ortega is on my short list of places to look. I've heard good things about it from quite a few people. I like that it's a little closer of a commute to the downtown area, where my wife is looking to get a job. Thanks for the input helo_wifey. I think we'll probably be going...

On and Off Base Housing at NAS Jax

I'm relocating to NAS Jacksonville in just under two weeks, and I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience (Good or Bad) with the housing office at NAS Jax. My wife and I are considering living on base for a number of reasons, price and only having one car being the primary two...

    Old Name Tags and Patches

Hey guys, I have a few name tags and assorted patches that I've collected in my long and salty two years in the Navy. For those of you that have been around longer than I have ... What have you done with all of your old name tags and squadron/shoulder patches? I recall someone had an awesome...

    Prior USAFR to USN

Regarding your letter of recommendation, it should come from someone who knows you well, and that can vouch for what kind of a person or a leader you have the potential to be. A senior enlisted member who supervised you in your previous unit would be a great example. As a platoon sergeant in...

Experiences with boat rentals at Sigsbee Marina, NAS Key West?

Everything webmaster said is accurate. I've rented boats from them twice, and both times it was a great experience. Sort of. As webmaster pointed out, make sure to steer clear of the shallow water and make sure you stay in the channels when applicable. I found this out the hard way. Damn...

    Automobile to Newport?

Riding a bike to Newport in November just sounds like a terrible idea. The weather is going to be cold, with a chance of freezing hell on your motorcycle. Also, have you completed the additional training required to ride a motorcycle (safety class. . .etc)? If not, then you wouldn't...

Army 2LT Army Helo guy to Marines Flight school. Possible?

Somebody busts your balls a little bit, six years ago, and you came back here and whined about it. Yeah, I'm glad you're not in the Army any longer either. I can see why someone like you probably wanted to leave. The Air Force mentality probably fits you much better.

Marine Corps Gunny applying for Navy OCS

Hey Gunny, I'm a former Army guy, 8yrs in as a Staff Sergeant. I had a lot of similar stats to you, and the Navy thought I was good enough to be picked up. I had a 3.0 GPA, but a little higher OAR on the ASTB. As always, your mileage may vary, and the needs of the Navy always comes first, but I...

What are my chances in getting a pilot slot?

Somewhere in the world, God is killing kittens. Just to warn you, 'what are my chances' threads are a terrible way to start off here, and are generally frowned upon. That is, unless you are asking "What are the chances I might get (____________) if I engage in coitus with. . . " never mind. Best...

How many pilots are prior enlisted?

This is just me speaking, since I was a prior Army guy, but you should never judge the Army by what you 'think' you know. Having a college degree and becoming a warrant officer doesn't mean that you're "going backwards" at all. If you were good enough to be selected for WOCS and the flight...

How many pilots are prior enlisted?

If you really want to fly, don't take being an Army Warrant Officer off the table. To some, it may not seem as sexy as flying that jet and dropping bombs, but I assure you, those guys do some amazing things. Also, as jtmedi pointed out, if you want to be an officer, do not enlist unless...

7.62x39 AR upper - any experience?

I have a Smith & Wesson 5.45 upper. The ammo, as you have noticed, is pretty cheap. The only down side is that you have to also purchase the 5.45x39 magazines, which adds to the initial expense. Also, I believe most of the surplus 5.45 is lacquer coated. Maybe I'm just doing something wrong...

    Current API training delay

I think the answer is as clear as it could possibly be. Don't expect more than a couple of weeks of down time, if that when you check in. Most of the people I know who have been through recently haven't been waiting very long. That, and don't worry about things that are outside of your...

It was great to poke around a brand new aircraft. It still had that 'new plane' smell. The technology in the front and back of the aircraft was pretty enjoyable to see. Certainly a step above the T-34.

It's a decent free alternative, but it definitely doesn't do "all the same shit." I would like to try out the Fltplan app in the cockpit, but I don't see that happening for quite some time.

You're dating yourself there Catmando. I'm from the Olathe area. . .I don't think I've ever actually heard anyone refer to it as NAS Olathe before.
