    Overprotective parents etc?

Wild, FWIW when I applied for NROTC one of my recs was from one of my English teachers who was a Marine grunt in Vietnam and later went on to be one of the founding members of Veterans Against the War. Needless to say, he was against the idea of my joining the military but still agreed to write...

    Tattoo

I'm also a 3/c in NROTC and will be getting a US flag on my upper arm sometime during winter break, a bunch of people in my unit have tats, shouldn't be a problem as long as it's not offensive and not visible in uniform. What are you thinking about getting?

AP reports that saddam hussien captured in Tikrit

I get CNN breaking news updates as text messages on my cell phone, and on the "messages" screen it shows the first part of the text which is usually the location (LONDON-AP, NEW YORK-AP, BAGHDAD-AP, etc)...usually when I wake up in the morning and see one that says "Baghdad" I cringe because it...

    Took Form 1 this morning...scores

Congrats Pensador. Unfortunately my GPA kinda sucks (mid-2 range, altho I'll have it up to around 3, hopefully above 3, by the end of my first semester of senior year) so I'm looking to get straight 9s on the ASTB, at least on AQR and PFAR.

    Hornet Engagements

There was some air-to-air combat in the Gulf War and some Allied planes (including CAPT Scott Speicher's I believe) were lost to enemy aircraft fire, none so far that I'm aware of in the war on terror (in either of the major campaigns or smaller actions in the Phillipines, Georgia, and...

Could an Ex-pat like me get in?

Bypass, I submitted my application in May of my junior year of HS and found out I got a scholarship the last few days of February of my senior year. You've got some time :)

    Marine Study Guide Math ?'s

On #32 (the x star y question), the star doesn't represent multiplication--it represents a completely different, made-up function.

Could an Ex-pat like me get in?

If it's money you're worried about, NROTC is not an impossibility--if you are awarded a scholarship they will pay all of your tuition for 4 years, and on top of that, most state schools will cover your room and board (typically around 25-30% of the tuition costs at a given school). For...

    Took Form 1 this morning...scores

55 OAR, and three 7's. Above average but nothing to write home about, especially given my crappy GPA. I'll probably re-take it in January (figure I can study my ass off for it over winter break since I won't have anything else to worry about academically--this wasn't the best time to take it...

    Notification of Scholarship

I had my interview in April or May of my junior year, had all my application material in by the end of my junior year, and didn't find out I got a scholarship until the last week of February of my senior year. I know it's nerve-wracking (I was checking the CNET website 5-10 times a day most...

Awesome news, this means less competition for a spot in flight school from folks who aren't as committed as I am.

What exactly does the Navy offer?

Wear a tie to your interview. Doesn't need to be a suit, but khakis, button-down shirt, nice shoes, jacket and tie. As for your hair, you don't need to get it buzzed or anything but then again it shouldn't be really long (more than a few inches).

    PT gear

Veg, can't say how things are up at Cornell but in my unit we can get away with wearing our own shorts as long as they're blue (if they're blank or say "Navy" even better, but I wear navy blue shorts that say "Boston College" in gold letters on the leg and never had any problems with it). Only...

    Gold Mine of Gouge

Divide, where on the site you posted can you find the info that would be useful on the ASTB? I couldn't make much sense of it. FYI, I'm NROTC and was able to access the CNET site, so it's not just open to AD personnel.

    Marine Pilot Joke

I'm guessing a helo ejection seat could work if it ejects you thru the windshield, rather than straight up thru the top of the canopy (and the rotors). Or, if when you eject, you're in a self-contained canopy that's strong enough to withstand getting hit by the rotors (and maybe when the chute...

    Transferring to a different college?

Damn, you've now been at 2 of the units I listed in my top 3 when I applied (GW was my #1 choice when I first submitted my package, with UVa #2 and Tulane #3, but I got deferred from Georgetown and got into BC so I called the Navy and put Boston U. at #1). How's Tulane? It was awesome when I...

    need help with PFT situps

Navy does them the same way. Your hands have to be on your shoulders/upper chest at all times, but other than that the only requirement is to touch your elbows to your thighs, which means touch your elbows about an inch above your waist.

    need help with PFT situps

I got 121 situps on my last (Navy) PFT, I'd say just work your abs as hard as you can. You don't need to spend 45 minutes at a time working your abs, the PFT doesn't test how many situps you can do in 45 minutes, it tests how many you can do in 2 minutes. Do flutter kicks, leg raises...

    What a difference it makes....

Thought I'd let you guys know this, even though I'm an NROTC Midshipman and not involved with OCS. Australian's and the Navy

Can't give you any advice I'm afraid since I'm still a NROTC Midshipman, not even an FNG yet (my fellow Yanks will know what "FNG" means ;)), but I will say that Australia is our brothers and if anyone from any foreign nation has a chance to become a US Naval Officer, an Australlian-born...

I got my share of second-hand smoke last year (try not to hang out w/ people who do that kind of crap, but it can be hard when it's pretty much everyone living in your hall) and never popped positive. 4y NROTC questions

Hey Brian, I was in your shoes just a few years ago, applying for an NROTC scholarship, now I am a Midshipman at Boston College. (Although when I had my interview for NROTC it was with a Chief, I wonder why yours is with a Captain.) The main thing I would say is try to get your GPA up. I'm...

I actually might have to wait until next summer because I strained a ligament in my hip taking the PFA next week. NROTC Cades: Please help me out

First off, Navy ROTC has midshipmen, Army and Air Force ROTC have cadets. Why can't you get US citizenship until your freshman year of college? Also, what country are you currently a citizen of? Shouldn't be a problem but having parents who are Iraqi or Chinese citizens might make getting a...

    Don't get disenrolled from NROTC!

I'm actually relieved to hear that, I thought it was 2.5 which would have put me in trouble (I suffered from not having the maturity to put down the shotglass and study during my first semester, which resulted in a 2.4 GPA, something that will certainly be corrected in the future). BC 14...

"For our first PFT, I performed 80 situps in two minutes, 56 pushups in two minutes, and ran two miles in 12:09. This earned me 413 out of a perfect score of 500 points. I was the highest scoring OT in my entire wing of 275 people, and ran the fastest two miles. For this I was presented a...
