    VFA or VAQ?

Memorizing parametrics was not all that useful. Listening to radars from different modes and functions was very useful in understanding emitters and ambiguity...but that part can be taught in 2 weeks, we really didn't need 6 weeks or a few months of it.

    Flight School backed up

Far easier to address retention but basically their answer was "GFY".

Thread with "Cow" in it for actual meat conversation

I dunno, costco has some TVP sausage patties that are pretty good, and it's a good way to supplement protein without spending $$$ on slabs of meat and throwing raw meat around all the time. Impossible is decent, which is saying a lot for fake meat, and represents a quantum leap in quality...

    First Shore Tour to NPS

I'm becoming more convinced that, more than anything else, it will be this day-to-day quality of life improvements where people like this will make the most impact. But for the most part we'll never know, because I haven't met many aviators that survive NPS to come back to the fleet. Not in...

OCS Pre-Conditioning Guide: Does it help?

Yeah, you also haven't actually done it yet. Getting in is just the first step, if you want to avoid a lot of pain in OCS get good at those things far beyond what will get you in the door.

Do all people who want to be a NFO get an equal chance?

In general, asking what your chances are is neither relevant nor helpful. If you want it, and you're a relatively well-rounded person, your chances are fair enough and you should apply. Are you wondering which commissioning source to select? OCS would be your best bet if you're not sure it's...

OCS Pre-Conditioning Guide: Does it help?

In reality, anything you do that will get you in better shape will help generally. For specifics, focus on doing lots of pushups all the time with good form, situps with good form, and high intensity cardio. My personal recommendation as a secondary focus is core endurance, like holding...

    World's 14 Best Aviation Museums

Ah, a little Prowler love in the Smithsonian pic. Cnx that, A-6. Pensacola should at least be in the top 20. I remember the SAC Museum in Nebraska being really cool as a kid. I wonder if it still is.

Platform Selection, How does that work?

I'll piggyback on that, the only factor among those *that you can control* is how well you do on flights and the boat if you're a pilot. Like he said, work hard and have fun, and the rest will take care of itself.

    Special Forces for NAs/NFOs

OP, I love your forward-leaning, but remember you should probably get your wings in your favorite platform before you look into something like that. Seriously, no one would be grooming you for that kind of job, if it existed, until after you got your mission commander qual anyway. Plus...

Are There Any "Good Gigs" Left?

Yes, and anyone will be burned out after more than 3 years in a squadron. If you're not, you're a weirdo and I don't want to know you. The mission for Growlers is still evolving, but it has a lot of interesting current and future potential. "Orbiting in the rear" maybe, but not as far...

Anthropomorphic issue for fitting in a naval strike fighter jet

Are you serious? Who says, "I'll apply for Marines too, and if I don't get Navy at least I'll be somewhere..." SO not the same... When I was applying, the recruiter told me to apply for sub nuke, because at least it's *something*. Bottom line, don't apply for anything you wouldn't want to do.

1,001 questions about the ASTB (post your scores & ask your questions here!)

I did comparably, I'll save you the time in finding him, whoever he is. I mostly studied the marine gouge and the ARCO book, although I did take a look at the Barron's as well. You can read through them at the book store for an hour or two if you want, to get an idea for how good they seem to...

    Automobile to Newport?

Dude I don't remember, that was more than 5 years ago. It all depends on your class but mostly it's towards the very end. It's pretty much just a safe place to stash your stuff for the rest of the time.

Dead burglar's family awarded $300k in damages

Call me a dove, but I'm not sure trying to scale a fence warranted icing the guy. Maybe, if they had been actually in the process of stealing the car, maybe, if they refused to stand down while inside the dealership or fired back with their (knives, this time), or mayyyybe, but doubtful, if...

NFO student trying to convince spouse of jets

Yeah...legit. Just this weekend some of my EP3 bubbas were telling me they're starting to go out for longer, and I know they're out about as long as we are, maybe split up a little different. The biggest factor to family life will be the community culture and how you support each other.

How to get into flight school straight out of OCS??

He means an Officer Recruiter. You'll want to talk to one of these specifically as opposed to an Enlisted Recruiter. You can find the nearest one by going to the following link: http://www.navy.com/locator.html They should provide you with all the information you need as well as get you on...

What IS the Penalty Box and should I fear it?

But if you think about it, it's probably the most logical question for a newbie who is trying to get in with the hopes of getting jets. granted, annoying question, but... I don't think anyone here with experience would say all platforms are the same... So with that said, lighten up, Francis...

Seeking advice on that first handgun or next weapon purchase? Ask AW!

So lately, guys, I've been thinking about getting my CCW. I'm kind of torn right now between an HK USP Compact, and some kind of 1911, both in .45. Now, I have no experience actually carrying a firearm around under my shirt, so are these going to be too big? What do you guys use for...

What is it like to be an NFO?

Stick skills aren't the same as knowing what to do. That being said, you'll find on hindsight that the T-6 would have been an easy plane to fly, compared to some others in Uncle's inventory.

Deployment video causing heat for Enterprise Skipper

Pity the guy got ousted, he seemed like a good guy, but... no surprise here... Granted, everybody is at sea and needs to blow off steam once in awhile, but even I could have told you that it's ill advised for the senior leadership to be broadcasting dick and fart jokes to the entire command...

    Dilemma

Yeah, you bet. If it helps, I had pilot as my first choice and got NFO, and my disappointment only lasted like two days. I haven't looked back since, it's still consistently one of the best decisions I ever made. Even if you still really wanted to be pilot, you have some chance of...

    Dilemma

Put down pilot anyway. What else are you going to apply to other than NFO? Supply? Ha! One thing I've learned over the years is, just because someone tells you that you can't do something, doesn't mean you can't. And in this case, you have nothing to lose by it.

    Preparing for OCS PT

Hey, Go Illini. What I did to prepare was run 4 times a week and do pushups/situps in between, and when I reported I did okay. On hindsight, I would have thrown in more sprints and hills into the runs, and added more lower abs to my routine. I would recommend pushing yourself, but if you...

The red cross will not get another cent, second or drop of blood from me . . .

Nope. Totally disagree. You want the Red Cross to be in with everyone so that they can help with any chance at all of people getting their Geneva Convention treatment, at least. You wouldn't turn down Red Crescent help, would you? Let me answer that for you: No. And the only way this...

    Advice needed

Has anybody said it yet that you need to adjust your running posture? I had shin splints when I first started training for OCS, but they went right away with a little rest and switching up my gait; you should definitely try that at some point. Edit: you did say that you altered your running...

    A-pool to Clean-up Oil

At least you'll have job satisfaction for once in A pool. What you should be doing is seeing if you can get on the payroll for your time as a BP contractor. Then you could be getting that $15-30 frosting on top of your paycheck.

    PRK after commissioing?

I think the short answer is, "not really". Usually if you're going to get PRK, you'll have to wait til your first shore tour, since you'll need your eyes for your upchit to fly. How long does PRK down you for? was it 6 weeks or 6 months? either way, it would be hard to be med down that long.

    My dilema, NFO or engineering

You know, I was a materials engineering major out of college, and I had a really hard time deciding as well. My current attitude is, I guess I count myself lucky that there wasn't whole lot of development in the biomaterials industry, or else I'd probably have a job somewhere else instead of...
