    Life Insurance for Aviators?

Permenant and whole life insurance policies are essentially high expense investment options wrapped in insurance paperwork. Life insurance is best done as term and invest the rest of your money elsewhere, such as in index funds with Vanguard.

    Roth TSP Option

While Vanguard and other mutual fund companies may have more options, the TSP offers all the options you really need. They have pretty much all of your index fund investing available with the lowest costs available. Take a look over at the Boglehead's forum and those guys would slit someone's...

    Roth TSP Option

When to use a traditional or Roth is based on the answer to the question: Do I expect to be in a higher or lower income tax bracket when I retire compared to where I am now. As others have posted most officers are at a low enough effective tax rate when you factor in things like BAH and BAS not...

    GI Bill for fun flying

Thanks JD81. From my recent research it seems as though I can only get the Post 9/11 GI Bill to pay for flying at a part 141 school that is set up direct with the VA and not though a college or university. And that 141 school would have to offer training in qualifications I don't already have -...

    GI Bill for fun flying

The Post 9/11 GI Bill will pay up to $15,000 per year directly towards flight training program. They will not pay for the private though. The way around it is to go through a college program and then you can get private also. Most colleges require you to be working towards a license and since I...

A7 midair wreckage found 37 years later

There was a dude on my cruise in 2002 who lost a F/A-18 due to incorrect out of control procedures following departure in a BFM engagement. He actually would have been okay had the guy not been a total douche already. No one liked him and this game them their opportunity to get rid of him.

    Q about Disassociated Sea Tour

Like the others have said, it really depends on your community and your qualifications. Weapons school graduates, regardless of platform, tend to stay flying. Non-weapons school grads who want non-flying orders can get them pretty easily. Some of those jobs can be pretty cool (depending on your...

Dear Boss, I quit! A letter to Air Force leadership....

There is a lot going in in this thread and many of you make valid points. Surviving military aviation Chapter 1: What not to do

    usaf times f-22 obogs

The main reason is because LOX is dangerous. LOX leaks can freeze flesh instantly for aircrew in the jet or maintainers handling the equipment. As usual Recovering LSO hits the nail on the head. I won't claim to know if the F-22 issues are the same or similar to the issues in the VFA community, but there have been known issues for quite some time since it was introduced on the Hornet. To boil it down on the VFA issue there is a...

From a training perspective, having a different color jet as the adversary is a good idea because it allows you to quickly discriminate friend from foe. Does it need to be cammo? No, it just needs to be a different color. As recovering LSO said, the studs won't see a Tiger hiding behind his...

Different Jobs with different gateways to becoming a pilot?

The only time I recommend enlisting is if you want to join your local Guard unit. By enlisting right out of high school they are covering your state college costs and you have a chance to shine with the locals where you will be applying as a pilot in a few years. Other than that one example...

As MB stated, not all CVs. It was the Vinson in 2003 when we had just started deployment. Imminient Danger Pay Now Pro-Rated

I totally get your argument. However, my problem is that two officers of equal rank in a squadron are there for the same job. Supreme Court to review Stolen Valor Act

This Act is merely what I call "feel good" legislation. Do I think anyone claiming to be a vet who isn't...

The problem grows with any bureaucracy. As it gets bigger it also gets more complex. The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

twobecrazy, your biggest issue right now is that soon the regionals won't be able to hire you unless you have an ATP, which requires 1500 hours. As that deadline gets closer, the hour requirement to be hired by a regional goes up. That is because there is not "grandfather" clause. If you hit...

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

But most likely the ones who would ask that question in the first place fall into a few categories: 1) Prior military who was, and obviously still is, a douche and likes to rattle his sword at the guy "begging" for a job. 2) The straight civilian who has a chip on his shoulder because he never...

    Redesignation for some SNAs?

I know it has already been said, but keep the focus positive while going through this whole process. Dreams become goals and the focus needs to be on obtaining those goals. The more focused you are on that, the more likely you will be to succeed. Good luck.
