    Scariest Day/Night Flying

That's what we were told. (H-3's) On a somewhat related note, are "freestreams" still done if there is a problem raising the sonar?

    FITREP Code Words

How to fix the problem? The rewards for doing well "administratively" are too significant relative to the rewards for doing well "operationally." (That applies within all departments - "operationally" refers to the actual performance of the job in question, whether that be maintenance, flying...

Being a good manager is more important for a CO than being a good tactician.

    FITREP Code Words

"I'm contending that older generations were tested far more and different leadership emerged that wouldn't be allowed to exist in today's world because our priorities and norms won't support it. " Good leadership adjusts to the realities of the world the leaders live in.

Best and worst experiences with flight instructors

I doubt this is available, but does anyone know the figures on mishaps related to missed checklist items for communities that do the checklists by memory vs the mishaps related to missed checklist items for communities that don't do the checklists by memory?

The further decline of personal accountability...

By that line of thinking, which has some validity to it, they should not make O-4s retire at 20 years. Keep them in, and flying, and bring in fewer ensigns. The point is that people are better pilots if they are in good physical condition than if they aren't. And so the Navy benefits from...

The further decline of personal accountability...

There have been all kinds of studies that show that improved physical fitness improves overall job performance, even if the work involved is not of a physical nature. That includes 4.0 sailors. And in the Navy, you never know when you're going to be fighting fires or carrying wounded up ladders...

The further decline of personal accountability...

The point is that the same guy would be better at his job if he were in shape.
  9. E

The further decline of personal accountability...

It's pretty simple - there won't be large scale "personal accountability" unless there are associated professional benefits and costs.

100th Anniversary of Naval Air Firearms?

Browning was pretty incredible as an inventor.

Back in the olden days, you were probably one of the JOs that used to hang out in front of the message boards. Don't know what the modern equivalent is.

    Two more CO's fired

Wow - they lost six chiefs plus the CMC, and another officer plus the CO! Probably got caught in a massa tickle fight. I mean, massive tickle fight.

Looks like the USNA has a qouta for pacifists too.

According to the last line of the article, yes.

100 RAF Trainees told "Sorry, but it's just not working out"

Those make for some incredibly competitive pilot selection boards for USNR squadrons.

And make sure you check on the benefits that are available from that - it will vary from state to state, but can include things like free tuition at state colleges/universities for your children, extra "points" in your application when applying for government-related jobs, etc.

San Antonio Police Helo Autorotates to 281 and bitters

I was driving to LeMoore one night (from Alameda) for water survival training, and there was a helo doing that (not sure if it was cotton or not). I pulled over and watched for several minutes - pretty amazing stuff. My hat's off to you!!

Don't buy a house with the assumption that you will be living in it for your subsequent tour.

Deployment video causing heat for Enterprise Skipper

Higher-ups didn't want to jeopardize their own careers.
  28. E

Deployment video causing heat for Enterprise Skipper

The real issue is not whether, in retrospect, making the videos was the wisest thing to do. The real issue is how the Navy should have handled this particular incident; the videos were clearly NOT disapproved by higher-ups when they were made.

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

You crap in it? Doesn't that stink up the cockpit? Wouldn't it be smarter to crap in your helmet bag?

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

Back in the olden days, the gate guards would look as you were driving out to make sure you weren't in a flight suit or flight jacket, and stop you if you were.

Or much more smelly. Like transporting sea lions from North Island to San Clemente.

    REQUEST: Good aviation/military books

That used to be quite common, particularly during wartime with the significant expansion of the military. Promotions could be to a "temporary" rank, with a return to "permanent" ranks at some subsequent point when the size of the force is reduced.

This is one of the best rebuttals I have seen outside of AW

That was hilarious! However, based on recent events I don't think you're allowed to say "rebuttal" any more.

Deployment video causing heat for Enterprise Skipper

"Everyone" is definitely an exaggeration, but assuming 25% of the stories of what went on on liberty in the PI are true, the basic point about it being common behavior is valid.

They might not have participated in skits, but getting hammered, hookers, strippers, etc. certainly wasn't foreign to them. I would say that everyone "behaved worse", including COs and XOs.

That's not the point - the point is if relieving him was an appropriate step to take, particularly for something that occurred years ago.

Why our best officers are leaving

Once people get into a position where they have the potential to make changes, 1) it's easier not to make changes, 2) They got into high positions in the current system, so from their personal perspective, it's not as much of a problem 3) Bureaucratic inertia makes it hard for someone to...

    New Chinese version of F-22/23/35..whatever

The point shouldn't be whether this is as good as ours, but does it narrow the gap at all. The answer is probably yes. If so, that should be setting off alarms.

I've told my son something similar - recently commissioned through ROTC and just starting in Information Warfare.
