    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

It seems like an easy question to me. Abandon the old-school methods for teaching navigation and wait and see if the mishap rate goes up as a result.

    Seeking advice regarding platform

I didn't get my first choice. I wanted S-3's and got H-2's. I had zero desire to crew helo's. Zero desire to be the SAR swimmer that crewing helo's required. I kept a positive attitude regardless and ended up enjoying my community so much that if I could do it over, I would select helo's as my...

    Music over ICS

My rig was such that I heard the music in my helmet only. I kept the walkman in my SV-2 and could easily shut it off for important evolutions (landing) or if the pilots got chatty. I had even managed to hang on to it for the first 10 or 15 years after separating....

    HSM-35 (The Magicians) Commissioning

I had heard that this was happening on 02 MAY 13. Can anybody on here confirm? Anybody on here going? HSL-35 (The Magicians) was our sister squadron and I think it is cool to see a LAMPS MK I legacy come back to life.

Thanks for the chuckle. I hadn't heard this euphemism for the NDSM before. Us Cold Warriors didn't rate it and those that did wear it back then called it the "Alive in 65" ribbon.

    Best Naval Aviation movies

Sorry, I was doing a poor job of closing the USCG to USMC circle. While the film inspired you by showing a USCG aircraft, at the time it was doing a USN only function (deploy wet swimmer (and by all rights should have an H-3 from HC-1)) which subliminally pushed you into Naval Aviation. I got...

Navy Search and Rescue Swimmer Question

In an effort to NOT repeat myself from the thread that Hozer linked (Search IS your friend), I will answer the question about prior swimming experience. Another Gathering for CAPT LeFon

Not sure if the word on this has filtered into this community, but the family of CAPT LeFon is planning a gathering at his (presumably) favorite watering hole in San Diego next week. Details here: http://www.neptunuslex.com/2012/10/30/shakespeares-2/

    Miramar Airshow

I'll be there as a spectator with the kids on Friday. Sure they'll miss some school but I think the Centennial of Naval Aviation has its own educational relevance. If you see an old guy wearing a gray t-shirt with NAC wings on it and a couple of eight-year-olds in tow, please say "Hi!"

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

So water temp less than 70 means wearing wetsuits when flying over water? Sounds kinda rough. In San Diego (back in the 80's) it was 60 degrees.

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

But we used to wear them underneath a flightsuit....you know....for the nomex that was in it. Is that no longer the case?

Does welcome home stuff really matter?

This was how it was in West Coast LAMPS as well....at least in the early 80's.

    For my rotor bretheren

I am probably showing some ignorance here, but this article is the first I have heard that the Navy is buying Ospreys for the Navy. Is this a SPECWAR thing? If so, 48 seems like a lot of aircraft to be devoted to one rather narrowly focused community.
