I've never operated with/near Army units from sea but I've seem some pretty impressive stuff from not 'higher-tiered' units to include flying in some pretty gnarly vis.

VX-30 has had the S-3's for several months now.

As a helo dude, mine just plugged into my helmet and taking them off was as simple as unplugging/removing them. Helmet then worked fine without.

I'd avoid buying them yourself. They fall in the nice-to-have vice need-to-have category. I didn't get any until my last year in the fleet and managed to survive.
