So you want to be a CAG (but can't)...

http://www.public.navy.mil/airfor/cvw7/Pages/xobio.aspx This is all well above my paygrade, but DCAG of CVW-7 is a VAW NFO. One too many anchors for Master, but still not a strike guy.

    Pensacola Apartments

Water, sewer, trash was included in the rent, so the only other utility was power which ran from $60 in cool months to about $80 in warm months when you need AC.

    Pensacola Apartments

I lived in Landings at Pensacola for my wonderful time in A-Pool, IFS and API. The management is friendly and individual units have nice appliances/counters/etc. You also really can't beat the commute unless you live at the BOQ. Even during high volume times at the gate it was no more than 7...

Navy Working Uniform Type II and III - finally something sailors can wear....

I don't know if it's still in the supply system, but five of them recently made an appearance at the P'Cola O-club. On top of some studs sporting tropical whites, no less.

    Details on Location for IFS

You get four days to travel from Newport to Pensacola. If you want more time, you can take leave (although you probably won't have very much to use). Once you actually show up in Pensacola, they'll put you on the list to start IFS, your wait to actually start will depend on how many people are...

Do you receive an OCS Class Ring after commissioning?

To the OP: this. You'll have wasted so much money on stuff that neither you nor anyone else care about that the last thing you'll need or want is something else to buy that says "I went to OCS."
  10. E

Updated list of things to bring?

Exactly. You won't wear a white shirt until after RLP, so you can wear the issued ones if you want, but it might be nice to have some better quality stuff. Definitely not something you need to bring in the first day.

Updated list of things to bring?

If you bring your Bible, they will let you keep it. If you don't want to bring your own, the Chaplain will give you one.

Do you receive an OCS Class Ring after commissioning?

Might just be a VMI thing; I know my Citadel ring came with no such policy, just little help from the Alumni Association to defer the cost.

Controller, airline crew suspended over incident in Florida skies

I seem to remember the Oregon Air National Guard having fighters intercept a commercial jet and escort it back to Portland a few years ago. I don't know if that's standard policy elsewhere.

    Swim PRT

FWIW, I remember reading that same thing when I was getting paid to do nothing. I asked my OR about it, but he said "just run it." If you are worried about the swimming at OCS or afterward, get in the pool and start getting more comfortable. A few people in my class struggled just because...

In OCS, stil awaiting a NAMI letter so I can get my orders.

Got mine at 5PM on Graduation Day. Nothing quite like being called back from liberty, putting on Khakis then waiting an hour to check into King Hall just to be told "you can leave, but only if you hurry; PSD closes in 7 minutes."

    Pre-OCS PRT suspended?

I guess it's a unit by unit thing. The CO of the NROTC at school called my OR and got the names of all the BDCP candidates at my school and called us in one by one to explain why we hadn't already asked to join the unit in PT and labs. I ended up not doing stuff with them, but when another...

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

As far as rules go, I don't know. From a practical standpoint, don't. Think about desperate OCs throwing your stuff around as they try to find their all-important alarm clock, q-tips or nail polish.

    Going through the Citadel

I just graduated from The Citadel in May and am typing this from Pensacola now, so PM me if you have any specific questions. Definitely pursue the honors program; Dr. Rhodes is a tremendous resource. Since I did BDCP and avoided being drafted into the NROTC Unit, I'll not comment too much on it...

    Pensacola Internet Options

I have Cox now with no problems. Downstream speeds stay high regardless of time of day. You could try AT&T to see if they have the "U-Verse" service at your place, but it's still just cable internet, not fiber optic.

    Insider Scoop on Navy OCS

The SUYA on the side of King Hall is now underneath the zipline at the end of the ropes course. Since the whole ropes course is now inside a chainlink fence, the pit now called and used as the SUYA is between wing 4 and 6 of Nimitz Hall, replete with toxic, re-used sand and garden hose.

Does anyone have any valuable advice for a new midshipmen?

I cannot weigh in on the how the process works specifically or if there is a "bump" or not, but when my MIDN classmates were getting their service selections last year at The Citadel, they were ranked against everyone else nationwide on the same list. They were subject to the same "Nuke Draft"...

Right, my OR said the same thing. We'll get OCS orders sometime in the next week or two when they send our documents up to Newport.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Recent post and article mentioned CVW-7 returning to Virginia from cruise. The article specifically mentioned the 4 VFAs returning with 44 aircraft and 56 aircrew. What does the rest of the squadron do without its planes and most of its officers?

    ADCP Question :o

I was in the same boat. Runron has it right, just print out an extra middle page. You have to tell them everything that's left before you complete your degree. As long as you're < 36 months out for tech or < 24 for non-tech, you're eligible.

Marine Options currently at VMI/The Citadel

You'll be allowed to leave the school after last duty on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The amount of time you actually get to spent away will vary week-to-week. Things like ROTC training, major inspections, and punishments eat up your weekends quickly. I should note, you'll seldom be allowed to...

Marine Options currently at VMI/The Citadel

I had that "sense" once about four years ago...it goes away. Fortunately it will return after a few weeks when you can leave the "bastion of antiquity" to discover the fun that is to be had just a few miles from your white-walled prison. You'll regret it, but only for four years. :)

1001 questions (and answers) concerning BDCP

Yes. The Navy becomes your full-time, year-round employer as soon as you sign on the dotted line (although checks don't start to show up for a while after that).

Bug your OR incessantly. He shouldn't have a week where you haven't called him at least once. After you get your final select and swear in, you can lay off a little.

    Academic Success Plan

Concur, put current courses through graduation on it. If there are only 5 semesters of space, print an extra page. BDCP Pay

It took me around 6 weeks for the first check. After that, it took a about three checks before they all started being for the same amount. I'd also like to second the hiccups comment from above. Periodically your pay will get messed up (i.e. it doesn't magically make the trip from the Navy's...

My BDCP questions leading up to final submission

Some advice: Be as specific as you need to be, not as specific as you can. If you put a specific course when you're allowed to take one of two, you will end up putting in for a change if you have to take the other course. Whatever you put on the form is what the Navy expects you to take and...
