Former NAVEUR Arrested on Bribery Charges

I may have missed it in the comments but even though he is retired, the Navy/DoD can still do an officer grade determination on his final retirement grade for misconduct during his active duty time. Theoretically they could say retire at O-1. Now, an active officer that is dismissed as a...

SCRA (Servicemember Civil Relief Act) for Terminating a Motor Vehicle Lease

As far as I know, they have to cancel it when you provide proper notification. You are only financially responsible till the day you provided notification. I realize the situations are slightly different but I cancelled a lease using SCRA when I got PCS orders overseas. I got actual orders in...

Right to vote in the military

I may be misunderstanding the law, but I thought changing your drivers license to a different state was one of the most foolproof/certain methods of establishing residency somewhere? The mere act itself was method of telling the new state that you are choosing to be a resident there? If I did...

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Somewhat similar, I decided to push over and unload the plane. I’m like ‘wheee, I’m floating’ and then I watched my PCL float past my head and land somewhere in the rear cockpit.

    Which watch?

Unless it’s changed, Omega replaces the whole movement when you send it in for service. I believe it’s up to version C.

    Flight School backed up

Circa 2006 very few studs wore the leather jacket simply because it didn’t exist in the supply system. You had to be on the ends of the sizing spectrum to get it. I was issued one and wore it all the time. I did get a few random questions from other studs about why I was wearing it before...

Are Naval aviators really away from home more than Air Force pilots?

Doesn’t matter the service, if you’re a pilot expect to be gone. You’ll miss a lot. It’s up to you to depend on if it’s worth it. I’m going on 17 consecutive years of sea duty and 22 deployments, and for me, it’s been worth it. It may not be for you. Even if you aren’t as crazy as me, you’ll...

To continue the threadjack, flew with a guy back in 2020 who decided to not "anticipate" the beeps on the hearing exam for his final flight physical. When was this? Because I was anthroed out of a few pipelines due to my butt-knee length and at the time (2006) anthro measurements were 100% not waiverable.

    All things MV-22 Osprey

Chip burn exists in most large rotary wing aircraft. Can’t recall for the TH-57 and don’t know about other small helos. Essentially, every rotating gearbox creates metal fuzz. The chip detectors are designed to burn off that fuzz but not larger pieces. In the helos I’ve flown that burn off...

Wait, so they were counting those missions as 3 points? 🙄

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

I think you're confusing doctrine with tactics. All branches follow JP 3.50, but the individual service TTPs may vary. That said, having participated in Navy and AF CSAR, the two are virtually identical, from planning to execution.

  30. insanebikerboy

    Haiti

My only experience with Haiti was during the 2010 earthquake. I recall flying near the border of Haiti and looking into the DR. From a few hundred feet, the forests/jungles, etc were lush in the DR, and in Haiti a lot of it was clear cut and barren landscape.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

You combined two things here, single pilot IFR and flying IFR. One depends on access to all flight controls, the other just requires practice.
  32. insanebikerboy

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

No direct pitch authority tied to the primary flight controls. It programs automatically and it's position is based primarily on airspeed (and a few others). The intent is to keep the nose close to level on the horizon. Without the stab, the helo would get into fairly large and uncomfortable...

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Before their new contract, SWA was known to be a place where guys would go and the bail if they job offers at other majors. SWA accounted for that. Now, with the new contract, the word I’m hearing is that new hires are staying put. That’s changed HRs people forecast and they have a backlog to...

NEWS Is the pivot to China a bunch of bullshit?

The Chinese are exceptionally long sighted (the 100 year plan, their legal mandate to not capitulate territory). That said, I’ve always wondered how the economic impact of a war would affect them. I would imagine almost the entirety of Western funds would vanish overnight. A little bit of...

    CMV-22B Osprey Rollout

Sergrad - How does it affect your career?

I got into the T-38 at about 3,300 hours between helos and light and heavy fixed wing. I never failed a flight until the 38. It wasn’t the stick and rudder, I could fly the jet fine. What was tough for me was the mindset shift of having to do everything myself. Ironically the flights I failed...

    Anyone Shoot Competitively?

Shot competitively with pretty decent success rates early on in my career. Later on, it seemed that whenever the west coast matches came up I was either gone for workups or deployed. I might try to get back into it, I was a big fan of Across the Course with my M-1.

Navy Now Taking High School Dropouts

My sister and mom absolutely hated each other when I was growing up. She moved out, dropped out, and got a good job in the town I grew up in. How do I know if I want to go navy or AF

These are excellent points and you’re exactly right. Depending on the squadron type, it is possible that an officer won’t ever directly lead enlisted until senior O-4/5 levels. It’s also very possible that an officer may only have to supervise a couple of other officers until that O-4/5 level...

How do I know if I want to go navy or AF

Here's what I've personally seen. At the squadron level, the culture is almost identical between the two services. You have the different types, fighter guys are different than helo guys, etc, but at the end of the day I've seen pilots from both the Navy and Air Force bitch about mostly the...

I get what you're saying, my question is how do you differentiate on a ship who is actively participating and who isn't?
