    The Road to OCS

First off, make sure you'll be satisfied being a Naval Aviator. If your goal is strictly to become a fighter pilot, be prepared for disappointment because not everyone gets their top choice. That's the cold hard reality. Also, make sure you want to be an officer too. I was explaining to an...

    VIP Trip

??? DC is where the interviews at Naval Reactors takes place, I'm sure you're misunderstanding him, if he emailed you the study guide, you'll have two technical interviews. Some candidates get a third: That's both good and bad. It's bad because you screwed one of the first two up, but good...

    getting another degree

Just a little bit of reality for you here: you probably won't be an engineer going into the civilian world after you finish your SNA commitment. By then your degree will be 10 years old and you won't have used it. Your degree is relevant when you graduate college and go for that first job...

    getting another degree

Why do you want an engineering degree so bad? What designator are you applying for? Seriously, unless you want to do something like test pilot or lat xfer to the CEC, your degree is irrelevant. If you're doing this strictly for regret, you'll find you're going to spend a lot of time and...

    Post Final Selection Benefits/Restrictions

No, but you can stay at the BEQ(Bachelor's Enlisted Quarters) for a lot cheaper than a hotel (usually something like $15-$25 a night) if they have room. If not, you can try the Navy Lodge on bases which is still a pretty good deal.

    getting another degree

It's gonna be more than just a "few" classes. It's not like medical school where you can be an art history major but if you took all the necessary biology, chemistry, etc, you're good. A Master's in engineering builds off of the fundamentals learned at the undergrad level. If you don't have...

I need some guidance on OCS

First thing, find an OFFICER recruiter that can inform you of the different officer programs. If the term "ASVAB" comes up, run like hell. It is not frowned upon to only serve 4-years and then move on, as long as you serve with honor and give everything you have while you're in the service...

Your chances are....(penalty box for those who can't help asking about their chances)

That pretty much sums it up. Bare minimum for lat xfer generally is 2 years after commissioning (I transferred around that time before my commitment was up). However, any community that invested significant time in training you (i.e. Pilot, NFO, Nuke) is going to make you serve your...

    NFO Jobs Post-USN?

Another common route (for any officer) is to get an MBA and hit up corporate America. Besides, you'll have a much more interesting background (and way more leadership experience) than the guy who was an accountant or financial analyst for a few years.

    About Navy Civil Engineer Program

Correct, when you go into the program you're active duty, but you don't really have a job. The time spent in the program (along with OCS) count towards retirement. Also, it counts towards pay so you'll commission as an O-1 with 2 years vice O-1 with zero.

    BDCP -> Navy [Reserve?]

The change happened roughly in the 2006 timeframe. You used to apply for augment (USNR to USN status) when you picked up LT, which most people got approved for.

    About Navy Civil Engineer Program

There aren't exact answers to these questions. There's a possibility that you can interview with the East Coast Accessions officer based out of Norfolk, VA. I would see a recruiter next fall to get the ball rolling. You can only be in the program for 2 years, but if you apply prior to that...

    About Navy Civil Engineer Program

Plain and simple, not many people know about it. The CEC is only about 1250 Officers strong. Also, you should note the distinct difference between NROTC and BDCP (the collegiate program)...NROTC picks up your tuition and you have no idea what you'll community you'll be serving in until service...

    Declined...kinda...

That's a lot trickier. Unless an airframe is going away or a certain community is overstocked, Pilots and NFOs generally need to meet their active duty obligation before applying for a lat transfer, which means probably two tours. That's a much longer road.
  19. Thisguy

    Declined...kinda...

I fail to see the threat. In all seriousness, lat xfer isn't a bad idea in this case. I highly discourage anyone from taking a comission with the intent of going into aviation because that's a lot harder, but SWO is such a large community that they can affort to allow people to lat xfer...

    Enlisted OCS Applicant (Supply Corps)

I wouldn't call it the determining factor, but it will be a factor. If it comes back low, it wouldn't hurt to retake it. It's hard to tell what will give them a reason to select you, but you never want to give a board a reason to not select you.

    Curlup tips

I've always sucked at the curlups portion of the PRT, but now it's just getting ridiculous. I did the PRT today and knocked out 84 pushups and only 72 curlups. Any tips on technique as well as exercises to improve curlup numbers would be appreciated.

    OCS Attrited: options to reenter?

Being attrited is basically getting kicked out of OCS. It's rare, because nowadays if the staff wants to get rid of someone, they basically work 'em hard until they yell "DOR" then they accept that as a DOR. When I went through in 2002, poor performance wasn't enough to get attrited. They...

Army's Alternative Professional Program - Graduate from West Point to NFL?

I'd be even more pissed if that was the case. What the fuck is he doing going to school on a ROTC scholarship for? If he's that good, he could get a golf scholarship to the same school he's attending. I don't think you're going to see a major increase in draftable players from USMA. This...

Army's Alternative Professional Program - Graduate from West Point to NFL?

We'll have to see how it plays out. As a 7th round pick, he is by no means a lock to make the team during training camp. However, the Lions do suck pretty bad, so if there ever was a team he had a shot with, that would be it.

    BDCP Questions

Just to add a point, B.S. doesn't make it a technical degree. For instance at alot of colleges offer both a BA and a BS in economics as well as a BA and a BS in Psychology. Also, Education Majors are awarded a BS at some schools, I could go on and on...

I'll throw my 2 cents in on this one: It's a small community of roughly 1,250 officers, and the two areas with the most amount of billets (construction contract management, and facilities management) have civilian counterparts. It used to be that you could do a contract tour and a...

    BDCP Questions

First of all, you need to be on track to get an accredited bachelor's degree. An associates is irrelavent here. Pilots need to see 20/40 uncorrected, PRK not lasik is an option. NFO's have much more lenient vision requirements. Switching to an engineering major just to look like a better...

Life of a JO depending on Path...

Your life as a JO is more dependent on what designator you choose, because that affects your future. The commissioning path is in the rearview mirror. That being said, I did OCS because I didn't decide to join the Navy until my last semester of college. There's no shame in that route.

    LT Advancement

No, they get out as LTJG's. As was stated above, you make LTJG 2 years to the day of your commissioning, but you don't make LT until the 1st of the following month, so getting out at exactly four years will leave you shy of that. I'm sure submitting your resignation letter 9-12 months out will...

    Automobile to Newport?

That's actually a pro if you ask me. The Navy will consider you active duty the day you leave home and you're alloted X amt of travel days based on where you're headed from. It's usually much more time than you need, which means you can pad your first paycheck by a few days than if you flew...

    BCDP Low GPA Questions

There's a little truth to that...but having a sub 3.0 in a technical degree still isn't good. What happens when other applicants have tech degrees with a 3.2 or 3.3? you see what I'm getting at. I think this is absolute horseshit.

    Courses that USNA accepts

I would assume there is a buffer time...not to mention needing a CO's endorsement. Don't forget you can always transfer from another college after your freshman year (though you'll still need to do 4 years at USNA). I'd imagine that'd be a quicker route than enlisting first. Someone...

It's definitely a culture shock. If you refer to an Army CWO as a "Warrant" (like we do in the Navy), they'll get this weird look on their face.

    LDO vs. CWO

This is for if they revert back (like mentioned above) or if they choose to retire before doing 10 years as an LDO. If you make LT but don't do 10 years as an officer, you'll get E-9 pay for your high three...not O-3E.

That's true. However, I'm willing to bet those guys were ROTC/USNA because the only thing Nuke requires is two semesters of calc, and two semesters of phyics...something the ROTC/USNA curriculum satisfies. Going into a recruiter's office to apply for NUPOC as an English major? That'll be...
