Anyone been stationed at Chinhae Naval Base??

I'm currently deployed to Chinhae right now with the Seabees. MSC is based out of Busan (or Pusan, however the fuck you want to spell it), we don't see too much of the MSC guys out here. That's funny that the backfill date is 1 May, because we just did a DMZ tour 16 May, and the MSC XO was...

The best part about these MRAPS is that when you're in the field and it's hot as shit, these bad boys have the A/C cranking :D

We're in a different boat then you I guess. Our det from NMCB 40 is constructing a 1600 linear foot road and we're putting up a PEB to shelter a switchgear that runs power to the base. We were tasked by the regiment...what kind of billet are you in, PW?

Thanks HJ. Don't worry, that's what our PAO is for. We (Det OICs and Company Commanders) submit photos and articles to him monthly and he shoots them out to various outlets. Oh yeah, it's great to be out of China Lake ;)

Nmcb 40 Can't let the Seabees deployed to the desert hog all the glory ;) Here are some shots of us doing quality-to-code construction on board Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC). Photos were taken by me, so hence, less than professional.

    San Diego Recommendations

Great place...I lived there from 2003 - 2005. They have a nice gym that costs a few bucks for your entire lease, definitely worth it. Plus if you walk in the gym at 6AM to get a work out before you head to work there's already ridiculous talent in tight clothing going through a spinning class...

Here's the answer on that: 11. Question: Will my $1,200 enrollment fee be refunded? Answer: Yes, MGIB (chapter 30) contributions (excluding $600 buy-up) will be refunded at a proportional amount [based on the number of months remaining under MGIB at time of Post 9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33)...

Less than -8.0 diopter pre-PRK, Any chances?

I had -9.00 diopters, which was a no go for the Navy, but I got that part waived. It prevented me from getting NFO though, and from what I understand, if you're in the refractive error range, getting PRK can make you eligible for SNA. However, I don't think you can have the surgery if you...

Arizona State gets NROTC in 2010

ASU is a ridiculously large school (40,000+ undergrad at Tempe alone) and U of A down in Tucson is just a little too far away for cross affiliate. It seems fair that the largest school in the Southwest have a program. Being close to a Navy area really isn't that important since you'll be...

    BDCP Underway Uniform Question

Look at the upside of BDCP: You'll have an ass-ton of leave when you commission and your time in service counts toward your longevity pay (and retirement if you're a lifer). If you were in NROTC you'd get none of that, plus to go supply out of ROTC something would need to be wrong with you...

It used to be that way...a LONG fucking time ago. OCS used to be in Newport and AOCS was down in Pensacola. Somewhere along the line it was all consolidated into just OCS and the location was Pensacola. Then a few years ago they moved OCS to Newport. What website is that? AOCS hasn't...

This thing is going to head south real fast. Yes, two years to the date of your commissioning, you will make LTJG. For LT, it's "4 years" but you don't put it on until the first of the month after you got commissioned. Example: You commissioned May 22nd, you'll put it on June 1st 4 years...

    Submarine to Aviation Lat transfer...

Everyone has mentioned how hard it is to leave the sub community, but it isn't exactly easy to lat transfer into Aviation either. The quota letter from the Nov 2008 board said that 1390 needs 1 YG 07, 2 YG 06, 1 YG 05. It also says in the text: "Select only those YG 05 and junior" Not trying...

    Career Guidance

The bad news is, that 1.1 GPA is horrendous. The good news? 11 credits isn't even a full-time semester. A 1.1 sounds like it's hard to come back from, but really isn't considering a Bachelors takes 120 credits or so. My point? If you got a modest 3.0 taking 15 credits, your GPA after that...

    Automobile to Newport?

The Navy will give you X travel days to go from Michigan to Newport to arrive at your NLT date. I suppose you're welcome to leave earlier than that to do your own thing, but you'll only get a set amount of travel days as if you were going from Michigan to RI.
  21. Thisguy

    Automobile to Newport?

One thing that wasn't mentioned: The amount of travel time the Navy gives you to drive across country is ridiculous. For non-priors, you're active duty date is the day you leave home, which means a bigger first paycheck, plus the per diem for the road.

SWO vs Supply, Pros and Cons: Decisions Decisions

  23. Thisguy

SWO vs Supply, Pros and Cons: Decisions Decisions

Retention bonuses are there for a reason: The Navy needs to dole out the cash to certain communities to get JOs to stay after their initial commitment. That should tell you something about the communities if the SWOs are offered $75K while Supply doesn't have a retention bonus (that I'm...

SWO vs Supply, Pros and Cons: Decisions Decisions

I fail to see how this is a SWO pro. 6 months in Athens for supply school after you commission? Shit, we should all be so lucky. The fleet isn't going anywhere young grasshopper. You'll see it's good to be paid to go to school and hang out with sorostitutes from UGA.
  25. Thisguy

    Just wondering

#2 looks good to me. Here's the deal: You're 20, don't be in such a rush to get to the fleet. It'll still be there when your time comes. If none of your friends are going to be around in the summer, that sounds reason enough not to stick around and take classes. Take that BDCP money and...

    Sunglasses

Keep in mind that Navy regs don't allow the wear of sunglasses in ranks, which is what you'll be standing in a lot of time in formation. If you want to wear sunglasses on liberty, keep in mind they need to be all black frame and conservative lenses. Skip the mirrors.
  29. Thisguy

    Graduate School to build resume?

Hmmm....I would need proof to believe that. I know the CEC will do a BDCP-like program for grad students, but only because once they have their Masters, the Navy won't have to send them later (All career CEC officers are detailed to grad school). In other words, it accomplishes something...

    How hard to get intel?

Keep in mind what contributes to the selectiveness is the size of the community. Intel just doesn't need as many Ensigns per FY than say, SWO, the largest community.
  31. Thisguy

    Incentives while in the BDCP?

That's exactly the kind of shit I'm talking about. You're being paid for being in 4 years, but experience wise? I wouldn't proudly put it that way. My favorite kind of Ensigns? The ones that get the good conduct medal because they took a year to finish OCS which puts them over the 3-year...
  32. Thisguy

    Incentives while in the BDCP?

Be careful how you word that. You'll have more time in service, i.e. commission as an O-1 with 2 years in vice O-1 with 0. But you're both the same paygrade: O-1. Don't be the guy when people ask you how long you've been in and say "3 years" when you're still an ENS.
  33. Thisguy

    Incentives while in the BDCP?

It's true. You start off as E-3, but (I think) if you make dean's list two semesters in a row you'll be bumped up to E-4.
  34. Thisguy

    Graduate School to build resume?

I'll be blunt. Those are all pretty bad ideas considering you have a bachelors. Why not just apply straight to OCS? Have you explored that route? MBA is a bad idea because it will cost you a chunk of change, plus aviator is one of the designators with the strictest age requirement (26) for...

    Questions Regarding NROTC and BDCP

Personally, I think for any active duty, STA-21 is the way to go. Your time in school counts as time in service, you can't beat that. BDCP is a great way for civilians and prior enlisted who got out and went to college, but to be eligible you need to be enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program...

OCS Applicant Seeks for Your Experience!

OCS is not something you need to quit your job to train for. If you're in decent shape and already have a habit of working out, you'll do OK. The one thing you do have going for you is that Supply and SWO are larger designators so they take more of them. The hardest part of getting a SEAL...

    Sta-21

Don't know about the timelines, but start as soon as you can! Yes, STA-21 is better for you than OCS because OCS requires a Bachelor's degree, whereas STA-21 sends you to school. Oh yeah, how's LT Martens doing out there?

    OCS PAy?

Wow, this must've changed. I remember there was a D-bag NUPOC in my class who said "I took a pay cut coming to OCS" because he lost his BAH. This guy was in the program since his sophomore year, referred a friend which got him bumped to E-7...and took 9 months to finish OCS. Wonder where...

Intel O's can't apply for Specwar!?

I'm gonna have to disagree here. The guys I saw selected for SPECWAR going through OCS were prior SEALs. That's probably a better route than lat xfer. Also, another reason it's tough to go SPECWAR is because the community is so damn small that they're just not taking that many people per FY...

What do I need to do?

Go ahead and get the ball rolling now. When you apply, you can specify a date as to when you're available. PAO is difficult to get into, not because of the job, but because it's such a small officer community, they just don't have that many quotas for it year in and year out. Best of luck.

    Contract Question

Do you have a credit card that gives you decent rates on access checks? It's not ideal, but it's a reasonably low rate, you can desposit a couple of grand in your checking account and pay it off after OCS. Again, not the best situation, but that's what I did, then I used the Navy Mutual 5K...
