    AMDO First Tour

You're right...you really won't have much choice. Are you asking about what types of airframes, etc? Honestly, it'll come down to whether you want to go west coast, east coast, etc. Don't be the guy who gets a boner for hornets and go to Lemoore when you could've gotten helos in San Diego...

    Who commands Seabees?

Nowadays it's a Gunny who is assigned as the Military Advisor. Also the Seabees do things a lot different now than say, Vietnam or WWII. If a Seabee has to use his weapon, it's probably going to be a bad day.

    A place in San Diego?

HA HA. Nice, I met someone who found a "nice" place in Hillcrest for his tour with ACB-1 down at the Amphib base. In regards to Mission Valley, I had a friend live at the Promenade, which, no shit has a trolley stop on it's property. That's uber convienent.

    A place in San Diego?

Mission Valley is a solid area too. I took I-15 S in the morning to North Island and traffic was going the other way and vice versa in the afternoon.

Death in the Family while at OCS

One of the guys in my class had his dad pass away while at OCS. He was able to fly back to Jersey, take care of things, and then he came back and classed up with the class right behind us. No reapplying, no hassle.

Do they hand you glasses at OCS?

I went through in 2002 and no one in my class got the BCGs, we just wore whatever glasses we came with. I will say, however, that I was disappointed I didn't get them, because they woulda been fun to screw around with later as a joke. :)

    Bdcp $$

...in most cases yes, but take a closer look at the payscale and you'll notice that officers get a decent bump at the 3 year mark while the enlisted don't. Why is this? Probably a retention tool to throw some extra cash your way before you hit your 4th year and can get out (obviously doen't...

    Bdcp $$

The biggest sham is that you can get the good conduct medal for being in BDCP. The worst part? Most people are not in BDCP for exactly 36 months, rather the people I've seen get the good conduct were people who rolled into H-company (GTX for us old school guys ;)) and accrued enough "enlisted...

Chances of Switching Jobs After Becoming an Officer

The most common changes are going from Unrestricted line (SWO, Pilot, NFO) to a Restricted Line or Staff Corps (Supply, AMDO). It's much more difficult to transfer to an unrestricted line community (though not impossible) because they get so many new ensigns from ROTC/USNA that the need to...

    Indoc PRT at OCS

When was this? I heard about them lowering the PRT standards because too many people were getting broken. In 2002, all you needed was the bare ass minimum (probationary) to stay in your class at the in-PRT, but you needed Excellent Low across the board (they didn't use points) at the out PRT.

    Getting an MBA

Here are a couple of other good online options. Another thing to note is that there's no distinction on your degree whether you got the MBA through residency or online. Indiana University http://kd.iu.edu/aboutkd/default.htm Arizona State http://wpcarey.asu.edu/mba/online/index.cfm

Helo medical attrite with a few questions.

Just to throw my 2 cents in there...I lat xfered into CEC from AMDO. All you need is an engineering degree to be eligible. However, another thing they like to see is that you have your EIT. They might let it slide for a flight attrite as you're still junior, but getting a PE is a part of the...

    SWO vs SUB

Keep in mind that Nukes don't make the big money until AFTER their commitment is up and the Navy starts throwing that Nuke bonus at you (12,5K for year to year, 23K per year if you re-up for 4 or 5 years...don't hold me to those numbers, they're just ballpark). My cousin called going Nuke the...

    Grad school in the Navy

Only program I know of that is more than a year is the Ocean Engineering and MBA programs. MBA is limited to 2 a year (though they're experimenting with 3 spots next may in Florida's 1yr program). Both of these are 18 months. As for agreements with schools, sure the CEC has agreements, but...

    Grad school in the Navy

It depends on the community. Most have a few NPS billets that they detail people to. The Graduate Education Voucher program will fund your education in your off duty hours and you'll incur an additional obligation. As for "getting into a better school than NPS" the Navy doesn't give a shit...

Eric Cooper: Navy SEAL, F-14 pilot, POSER Bigamist

Probably a virtual impossibility. The SPECWAR Community states LTs aren't eligible for lat xfer in the community (too senior). Aviation typically won't let you lat transfer until your commitment is up. Also, SPECWAR isn't letting anyone lateral out at the moment either. For an example...

    Suggestions?

OHARP is pretty common. Or they'll stash you at Whiting before you class up. Seeing how most first tours are either squadrons or afloat AIMDs, I don't see them sending you to a sea command then bringing you back to Whiting.

    Choosing your station after OCS

Again...totally depends on the designator. Some designators like Supply, PCS you to a 6-month school and your performance there dictates who gets first choice. (Sorry, but academics at OCS count for dick.) Some designators send you to a 3-month school that doesn't rate a PCS, so you get...

    Choosing your station after OCS

Depends on your designtor and most of all, depends on timing. If the Navy doesn't have a spot where you want to go, it's not going to pull one out of thin air. Likewise, the Navy has to man undesirable locations as well, so if you manage to dodge the bullet, someone else will get the shaft.

What not to do at OCS

Forgiving? Screw that noise. Liberty is a test all right. As officers in the fleet you get much more liberty priviledges than the E-6 and below when on cruise. Think about this: These guys A) break uniform policy, B) Leave the 50 mile radius, C) get into a fight. What if they got in...

AMDO, What is it like, what exactly do you do?

To echo what Heyjoe said, squadrons typically have an O-4 pilot/NFO as the MO. He's the department head. The progression you listed isn't really a career path, that can all be knocked out in your first squadron tour. What you get really depends on your squadron, typical billets include...

    Tech majors

It's even simpler: You need 2 sememsters (not years) of Calc based physics, and then Calc I and II. No multivariable Calc or Differential equations. This means all midshipmen from NROTC and USNA are eligible for nuke. However, if you're a tech major, you can screen for the interview with a...

Monster Marine OCS thread: stupid questions answered here!

That's pretty sad. Marine OCS is what...10 weeks? Keep it in perspective, you're still young, and alot of people that age hope to meet "the one" in college, but in reality, you've got your whole life ahead of you. Best of luck with OCS.

I think your ASTB scores will shine through. If you want to be a finance major, be a finance major. Don't try to get an engineering/science degree just because you think that's what they want to see. There are plenty of accounting/communications/music/poli sci/etc. pilots and NFOs out...

    Life of Supply Officer

That's not entirely true, as there are numerous shore command billets. For example, the Supply school in Athens has a CO. Restricted line is in the same boat as the Staff Corps, as in not eligible for command at-sea. Basically, as a restricted line/Staff Corps you're working in a more...

That's about right. Keep in mind that AMDOs O-1 to O-7 only number 500 or so. BDCP NUPOC Interview Questions

That academic badge is for OCS. I think it's for being in the top 10% academically of your class. Honestly, don't worry about that shit. That "award" entails wearing a name tag that says "Academic" over your nametag for a couple of weeks while you're a candidate officer (final phase) at OCS...

    Many ChemE's in NUPOC?

That'll pretty much qualify you for NUPOC. Your recruiter isn't blowing smoke up your ass. Basically, the first step is to screen for the interview in DC. They'll look at your transcript, but having a 3.0 in any engineering degree is pretty solid. Once you get to DC, the spot will be yours...
