Advice on a BDCP and NROTC decision

You'd be surprised. I'm met douchebags who qualify for the good conduct medal (3 years enlisted w/o NJP) while in BDCP/OCS and they a) wear it around like they're salty b) refer to themselves as prior enlisted Not a winning combination. I think the technical term for this is "being a cheesedick"

Advice on a BDCP and NROTC decision

That's good that he's being candid. The way I rationalize it, ROTC is a great program for high school kids who pick up a scholarship and get four (or five) years covered, especially if it's a private or out-of-state public school. BDCP just seems the way to go if you join mid-college. Money...

Advice on a BDCP and NROTC decision

Concur with this if you are indeed a final select for SNA via BDCP. You'll accrue time in service and leave without having the time obligation of ROTC along with the fact that your designator is set.

    Question for an Old Salt

@OP, if you want some more descriptive examples, read "Warrior Elite" by Dick Couch. Great read, and it does a great job illustrating how tough BUD/S is and how so many just reach a breaking point and DOR.

    Lifting 101

I'll plug crossfit too. Not only do the creative workouts combine cardio and strength work often in short, intense bursts (less than 8 minutes), but the program is varied that you won't get bored with it and the classes are fun as long as the other people aren't complete D-bags. Trying to come...

    Masters Degree Majors

Not to mention that any business school worth going to isn't going to admit anyone without any work experience (though some exceptions, are made, and usually only one, if any, per year), though online for-profit educational institutions will gladly take your money and admit you to their program...

    Masters Degree Majors

Concur. As someone who's finishing up a Masters this summer, I can say firsthand, if you're not 100% interested in your course of study, it will be miserable. It's not like undergrad where you have so many requirements you're going to stomach some crap you just need to graduate. A Masters is...

    Graduation 2010

That clears things up a bit. The graduating seniors didn't have any ribbons, but the cadets who were helping out were wearing theirs.

    Graduation 2010

That's nothing. I went to the ASU AF ROTC commissioning ceremony a week ago and saw underclass cadets with ridiculous amounts of chest candy. The various ribbons were probably given for meritorious achievements such as "Best Deep Throat technique" or "Taking it in the can without a gagball"

Less than 1 year to graduation

Forget if you're eligible for BDCP or not and just get the ball rolling. It's a time consuming process with a lot of waiting. Even if you can't get into BDCP, it'll be much better to at least have an OCS date lined up shortly after you graduate instead of waiting around to hear back after...

    Recruiting Office Will Not Respond?

I'm a little surprised that there isn't a small office in Blacksburg. At Penn State, there was an office in downtown State College staffed by two LTs and that office fell under the NRD Pittsburgh umbrella. I would try the office in Christianburg. I know the navy.com site lists that as an...

I'm with you there. After years of swinging by the Commissary after work to do my grocery shopping, I'm easily spending twice as much at the Safeway in town on my grad school tour. The funny thing is, when I was an ENS, I had some other ENSs look at me with disgust and say "Ugh...you shop...

Here's the formula = 10% * Monthly Base pay * Months of active duty served (fractions of a month disregarded). So, An LT with 10 years: 0.10 * $5539 * 120 months = $66,468 before taxes

    PPL or Masters Degree?

A cautionary note on the Masters: Only do it if you're really interested in the subject matter. Graduate courses are far different than undergraduate in terms of depth and workload. If you think getting a Masters is a good idea because you have idle time, you might want to think again. 11Gs...

    NROTC and Masters programs

There's the Graduate Education Voucher (GEV) for line officers to get a masters on their own time, but the Navy picks up the tuition. Not sure about the details, but there's a message announcing the program at least once a year.

    NROTC and Masters programs

In short, no. The idea of NROTC is to get your degree while going through officer training. There's no benefit to the Navy to have a program that pays for your masters then commissions you upon completion since you need a bachelors to pursue a masters, and the bachelors degree makes you...

    Being vegetarian in the Navy?

You'll have an easier go of it as an officer dining in the wardroom than on the messdecks. On a carrier, if you don't like what they're serving you could always order a veggie burger or something and there's always a salad bar available, Wednesday pasta bars, etc. It limits your selection, but...

Anyone read this article? "The Reality of OCS"

Sometimes the staff identifies people that just aren't prepared (i.e. really weak at PT) and they need an excuse to roll them back. They can't just do it for poor performance, so they fail that person. The funny thing is when a pretty good candidate fails by a point, the staff gets all pissed...

Anyone read this article? "The Reality of OCS"

No, constipation happens at OCS...not on the order of 2-3 weeks...maybe 2-3 days. In fact, during Indoc week, the only time I had to comfortably take a shit was after taps. There was no way you could drop trou in time during a normal headcall.

    Navy Health Corps - Dentistry

Yeah, you'll rate everything an active E-6 does including BAH. But another thing to consider is you're paid twice a month while I'm sure tuition will be charged in a lump sum per semester. Navy Health Corps - Dentistry

I think the key difference is that one is a good program for someone who is already in dental school (the one that makes you active E-6), and one is a good program for someone who hasn't started dental school yet (the one that picks up the full tuition tab and pays you a stipend). Although...

New non-prior dentists commission as O-3s with zero years of service (dental school doesn't count for pay). You'll be an O-3E with 6 years. Which route should i take?

The reality is, if you enlist with the intention of applying to an officer program right away, you could end up waiting for a lot longer than one year. I don't know when the next board meets, but your recruiter should know where MEPS fits into the picture. Recruiters are always going to push people with technical degrees to go NUPOC because that's where the requirement always lies (CEC is much smaller). IF you have any questions on the CEC...

    Army to Navy OCS

Sounds like something is lost in translation.
