As someone who has stood over 53 days of RDO in the last 3 months, I'd rather be on SDO than RDO. You have working AC, a bathroom and the internet for entertainment. RDO is just stupidly loud and sweating your balls off for 4-16 hours depending on how bad the sked gods hate you that day.
And how the hell can Meridian have pool SNAs doing this, when we have to have winged Aviators (not even NFO retreads) standing it here? :icon_rage
They're not, they are sitting SDO. Right now Meridian is in the process of putting post-solo studs trained up for RDO though.
Let's keep this a Meridian thing. At least for the next year or so. Then they can try it here.

Just to add fuel to this fire:
It takes an aviator to land an E2 or C2 at the boat. A Hornet can do that itself.
More fuel to fire. Coupled approaches can kill you too so takes an AVIATOR to know when approach is going bad and go manual in middle of an AFU approach and still land.

Yeah, you're right. Having to fly the plane from the very get-go with no option of going coupled is the same as just maybe having to take the controls on a coupled approach. Yep, definitely the same.
Sometimes I have to open the microwave door early so the popcorn doesn't get burned. That's no different than getting the oil out and popping corn myself.

LOL. It is a nice feature....but not everyone flies them. In 14 years only did two personally and both were scariest passes i have ever flown.
But as a fellow blogger said earlier in this forum....one team.

I can see it....it's on the horizon...it's our future....I see it now....UAV's...remote control planes...pilots as QA Officers. LOL

Yes, and yes. Recent string of cnatra mishaps convinced those in charge to focus more on safety, part of the solution was to try and reduce the number of students to a level commensurate with the number of instructors. Basically too many students, not enough instructors means students don't fly often enough to be proficient/safe.
Weather in mississippi blows. And as near as I can tell south texas is no better.
But to be honest I have no idea if this is affecting jet spots out of primary, it seems like they just show up here and sit. I haven't really walked by wing stucon in a while.

Reading your comment brings up a point that is sad. It may or may not be true but fact it is being discussed is sad. Safety should always be #1 concern in training environment and even in combat operations for that matter. Everyone is a safety officer and has a duty to fulfill that when it comes to safety. After all I don't care if you are just a student or nugget JO...it's your life too. We get so focused on mission at hand and pressure from leadership to get X's or mission complete that sometimes that pressure puts us into bad situations when bottom line never a reason to go there. Reminds me of an LSO that refused to recover aircraft because had no centerline camera (not safe thing to do). Air Boss and Capt of ship said you will recover them and we will fix it after recovery. He stuck to his guns and said no and stood out in LA and waived every aircraft off until the camera got fixed. Extreme but has good learning point. Operational tempo should never trump safety.
Well the other side to think about is not enough IP's and flying three times a day for 18 months straight is not wise either. Leads to shortcuts (brief and debrief times cut short) and complacency and in my own opinion I think played a role in one of those mishaps. Once again just my personal opinion and leave it at that.
Sad fact is it took that many mishaps to come to this realization that something is broke. And it is not smart to cut flight hours out of program but that is a whole different discussion. It's bad business and unfortunately NAE is turning into a business and decisions are being made as a business.
RDO is one of the stupidest things around and serves no better purpose than to show how much TRA-creep has infected us as a community. Believe me, I stood my fair share of RDO after winging and it was utterly pointless. I waved off a couple TC-12s and gave some blasts from the green lights for initial solo ball calls... and that's about it. We can't mitigate stupidity and sucking and that's what RDO is trying to do. If you're going to fuck it away and land gear up, a recently winged guy sitting in a shack reading a Playboy probably isn't going to change that.

Too many RDO's simply just go to shack and do anything other then RDO duties. While I do agree it is a red a$$ it still is a duty/watch standing post. Too many don't care and don't take interest in RDO duty. There is one who did pay attention and noticed something strange on a solo flight. BZ to him

Look, I'm a realist, a pragmatist if you will. You stick a kid in a shack for hours on end with no entertainment but making log entries and pissing in the grass while jets land, you're probably not going to get a solid attention span. Half-mast, feet kicked up, reading the magazine that's in there is the reality. Sure, there is some added attention when the student solo calls the abeam, but otherwise, ya....
