    Today's Navy or your Grandfather's

Voted for 40's/50's. I haven't been in the Navy long enough to truly see all the pro's and con's that come along, but I have always been fascinated with the WWII time frame. Technological advances came quickly, and events that occurred then defined the world for the next 50 years. That, and...

    OCS date in November

Flu shot...no. Most illness is related to viral infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, rabdo, and such. Just keep your hands as clean as you can, drink tons of fluids (OJ if and when you can), and know when you're too sick to train. And no boxers. You will be issued whitey tighties. However...

    OCS dates for aviation selectees

Well I guess what seems like a little to me is a lot to you. :icon_tong I was there from Jan to March. We had 5 out of 29 aviation at graduation.

    OCS dates for aviation selectees

My OCS had around 50 people at the beginning, of which only 6 were aviation. Seemed fairly typical for the classes behind mine as well.

    PCS/DITY Question?

I did a full DITY from Phoenix to Corpus Christi with a little over 10K pounds of the wife & I's stuff (she has a ton of books...literally). We rented a Budget 26' truck with car trailer. I checked Penske, Uhaul, and Ryder also, but this time Budget came in cheaper. We spent just under $2K up...

    Red Bull Air Race

According to TVGuide.com, FSN will show the "Air Race World Series" on Monday at 2:00 pm CDT. Monday's (25 Sept 07) one-hour episode will show coverage from Interlaken, Switzerland (race was on 15 July 07). Earlier this week it was on at the same time, but showed Istanbul, Turkey (race 02 June...

    PRT scores significant pre-OCS?

When I was going through the application process and did subsequent PFA's for BDCP, the rules about PFA changed a couple of times. Initially you did the PFA after you received a pro-rec and went to MEPS. For each PFA we also had to complete a Health Assessment Questionaire. However, the...

    New Vision Requirements

Don't let the timing fool you. NAMI can and will get you when it is most inconvenient. When I was in OCS earlier this year, we had a guy in my class get a call from NAMI saying that he was NPQ because of some chest x-ray issue. That was the day before graduation/commissioning. He managed to...

    Military clause question

I've done similar deals with apartments leases with various roommates coming and going. Eventually I had the lease in my name alone (the other roommates had to sign off on it), and then I cancelled the lease. I've not had to do so using the military clause, but the worst they could say is "no...

    Caucasian, Guy, Bdcp Selects. ?????

    PRK after pro rec

I did. I went to MEPS after receiving a pro-rec and found out that my vision was worse than 20/40 uncorrected. I talked with my recruiter and he made a call (to whom I do not remember) and got it cleared to have my package held for an additional 3-4 months. I had PRK two weeks later (on my...

The UNOFFICIAL list of things to bring to OCS

Why would you need an enlisted uniform at OCS? Everyone wears poopies or wash khakis until Candio phase.
  21. nugget81

The UNOFFICIAL list of things to bring to OCS

No, you will have ample opportunity to get new uniform items while at OCS. There is nothing you will need uniform-wise that can't wait until you are already there.

    Meds at OCS

To add to the discussion, you can have medications prescibed by civilian doctors with you at OCS (make sure you have the prescription.) I was initially (and wrongly) diagnosed with acid reflux by a civilian doctor and had meds with me at OCS. The change in diet quickly alleviated me of any...

    Brazilian plane crash (merged)

I agree with HAL. I've shot several single engine approaches in the CRJ sim and used thrust reverse. Also, the FAA does allow TR's to be MEL'd, even after accidents resulting from them: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/GenPDF.asp?id=LAX02FA266&rpt=fi

    Contacts vs Eyeglasses

LOL, that's funny that you think you can wear contacts at OCS. No way. Depending on how bad your vision is will depend on whether or not you decide to wear the glasses they "give" you.;) Keep the contacts in your car for liberty and Candio phase.

And then give them to someone in your class, usually the scribe. I gave my camera to a candio a couple of times for different evolutions, but definitely not during the first few weeks.

Help...What to really bring to OCS

I wouldn't call it bad gouge. In fact, I would say that it is a good possibility that port tack's plan would work. Even without liberty you can go to the NEX and get a POV run on the weekends.
  33. nugget81

    Running Shoes

I prefer Asics also, but I try my shoes on at the store and then find them for the best deal online. NB is definitely a good shoe, but not for everyone. Go to a running store and have them fit you for your running style...that's your best bet.
  34. nugget81

Do I really need to bring anything to OCS???

The gear you bring with you will be needed during the first week of training. You do not get any additional gear issued until the first Wed. Don't be that guy who didn't bring anything and has to borrow from everyone else.

True, color doesn't matter. However, they expect your shoes to be used but clean (not brand new looking) for inspections. A second pair is very nice to have for those days when your first pair gets all wet, muddy, or otherwise.

What not to do at OCS

So this happened this last weekend to some candidate officers at OCS....six candio's go to a bar in Destin, in civilian clothes, for a good time on liberty. Two problems already: 1. Destin is out of bounds by 4 miles (you can travel up to 50 miles while on liberty) 2. They aren't in uniform as...

Yeah, that about sums it up. The Candio's will take $20 from your packet on the first day to cover things like haircuts and to start your class fund. Be sure to have at least $20, so you're not "that guy".
  44. nugget81

    Jun 30 OCS date

Wow, you guys are really nuking this whole check-in thing, which is by far the easiest thing you'll do at OCS. After all, you just need to show up with the stuff you need to train with. However, Tom is right about the NET and NLT times...go by those. Some priors will have orders that tell...

Help...What to really bring to OCS

I brought about $200 in cash, and it took all 12 weeks to spend it. I used my debit card for most things outside the borders of OCS. There's ATM access when you need it. As for uniforms, expect to pay about $2500 for everything, which is due on the day of graduation. You are given a uniform...

Cost of getting a PPL (answers, not questions)

Yeah, $7K is about the average, so the first post is a very good deal. Keep in mind that not everyone is capable of getting their PPL after ~40 hours....for many people it takes much more than that, which drives up the cost.
