The heat and humidity at OCS

Fatigue, pain...whatever. You'll learn to push through both at OCS. And FYI, the OCS PFA is not a BDCP or ROTC PFA. If you are barely meeting minimums for your college program PFA, be prepared to fail the in-PFA and spend a few extra weeks at OCS. Give your best all the time....

    So after OCS...

No more boats at OCS. No more pistol quals at OCS. No more obstacle course at OCS. Hell, I don't even remember doing anything there!

    Places to Live

Perdido Key is a nice area to live, only about 10-15 mins outside the backgate. This probably wouldn't work if you're going to Whiting after API, however (too long a drive).

    Death of the Hobby Pilot?

I can confirm this. I graduated UND last Fall and knew of several people who were hired by Pinnacle to fly CRJ's with those numbers or less. They only required that the applicants had completed UND's CRJ course (which consists of a semester-long systems class, and 6 weeks of ground school &...

    BAH at OCS

I spoke to PSD (personnel support activity detachment for those not knowing) today and it appears that there was a rule change last Nov concerning BAH at OCS. Before the rule change, you did not receive BAH while at OCS unless you had dependents (married or kids, etc). However, the new rules...

For those of us heading to OCS soon: how do you feel?

GySgt: Boy, why didn't you eat that sausage patty? OC: Not hungry, sir. GySgt: Well, how would you feel if you were that sausage patty, spent your whole life growing up watching your sausage patty friends get eaten, and that's all you wanted was to be eaten, but now you're just sitting there...

    API Report Dates

As of right now, API is short on pilots. They cannot get enough into the classes that are starting. However, when the big rush of academy and NROTC grads hits, the wait will be long as usual. Like what was said before, if you want to start API right away, be one of the first to check in, if...

    Checking in to OCS

Check in between 1000 and 1200 on Sunday. Any earlier and you're only helping the candio's on indoc staff. They'll tell you that you're late but it doesn't really matter. We had a guy show up at 0200 Monday because the airport was essentially closed due to fog and an out-of-service ILS.

    Pro Rec'd BDCP

I'm in AZ right now and I'm BDCP SNA....and I go to the better aviation university (i.e. not ER ;) )....I used to live here and loved it! Oh yeah, congrats on the pro-rec!!

    PRK experience?

Minor loss of reading vision. More of a slight annoyance than anything really. Otherwise A-OK!
  18. nugget81

    Too Late For Prk?

I was pro-rec'd, went to MEPS, found out that my vision was worse than 20/40, got PRK, and received my final select about 4 months later. This was a very unusual case, but it is possible. I was certain that I was at least 20/40 based on my FAA medical a few months prior to the pro-rec...

    PRK experience?

It's been over a year and half since I had PRK, and I'd still do it all over again. Best use of money ever! And yes...it does hurt like a b!tch for 3 days....

    BDCP q.

    I concur.
  21. nugget81

    Interviews?

Never heard of such a panel for BDCP/SNA. Double check with your recruiter to make sure there wasn't some sort of miscommunication between you two.
  22. nugget81

Took ASTB yesterday, did they remove the Bio Inventory?

The correct answer is "yes" if you want to go SNA. Anything else just put "no".

The Man Who Rode the Thunder

Yeah, Brian Udell has an amazing story to tell. He holds the record for the highest speed ejection (supersonic). Doctors told him that he wouldn't walk again, let alone fly. Less than a year later he was back in the F-15. Now he flies for Southwest.

Navy Pilots Test New Flight Device

I've seen something similar done at a civilian altitude chamber, but on a much more simplistic scale. An instrument flight training device (no visual) was brought into the chamber and instructions given to the pilot over the chamber's intercom system. The pilot started making errors almost...

    BDCP Pay

Currently E-5 (got the good grades & referral bumps) making about $2500/month after taxes. Pays for rent, gas, food, etc. Most of it goes to help pay debt incurred by school prior to being selected, while the rest goes to savings to build a cushion for that first year out of college (damn...

    ATC gets no ZZZ

That's what I'd heard as well, and NASA backs it up with a sleep study (done on pilots using in-flight naps, but gets the point across regardless). The study used the following sleep period: –3 min preparation –40 minutes sleep –20 minutes recovery The results showed: -Decreased...

    Manhattan aviation accident...

I disagree. Private Pilots are authorized to enter Class B airspace, but how are they supposed to know how to operate in that airspace (or even the VFR corridor) unless they've received training in it? The fact that this particular airspace is New York's airspace is irrelevant. If you're...

    Situps

It's important to change up your routine periodically, especially if you feel that you've hit a plateau. You don't necessarily need to "feel the burn" after every workout, particularly with abs. However, I would recommend practicing for the conditions of the test. Once every few weeks I do a...

    Money spent during OCS

I have a friend who graduated OCS within the last year, and he indicated that it is a very wise idea to save money ahead of time. The largest expenses were uniforms (in the $2500 neighborhood), and going out during liberty. He thought that there would be little to nothing to spend money on...

    I never knew....

I don't have any real turbine time, but of the various airplanes I've flown, I prefer the stick between my legs as opposed to the side. It feels more natural to have it there, although the comfort of a side stick cannot be beat (Cirrus, anyone?). However, it just seems that the leverage is...

    Confusion about degree completion

No. You determine what classes you will take, when you will take them, and when you will graduate on the ADCP. You then submit the ADCP to the board, who will determine if it is satisfactory, as determined by receiving a pro-rec and ultimately a final select. If you can't get a class for a...

    Enlisted Nuke or NUPOC?

If you could skip the enlistment and apply for NUPOC, why wouldn't you? Clearly the application process will take less than 2 years (the minimum time you'd spend enlisted, according to your information). I am not aware of the requirements to apply NUPOC, but if you meet them you should apply...

    Pay Grades

Actually the Dean's List bump is not about making the Dean's List. Line G in the BDCP contract states that the BDCPer will be "meritoriously advanced one paygrade for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for two consecutive semesters." The recruiters' handbooks still state "Dean's...

    Embry Riddle anyone?

One thing I can say about Riddle, they do have the second best flying team in the country (Prescott, not Daytona)..... http://www.nifa.us/SAFECON_2006_Results.htm#overallevents We pay about 1/4 the cost, and there's a nursing program here too....

  46. nugget81

    time - my weakness

Just be sure that when you practice, that you practice in a test-like setting. That means timing yourself, using a computer if you're taking the computerized version, and whatever else you need to do to essentially duplicate the real testing experience. Practice doesn't make perfect, but...

    Recent Selectees

Study up for the ASTB and raise those scores! That and apply until you get picked up or until the Navy takes out a restraining order against you....
  48. nugget81

    Switching schools.

Two things: BDCP is not a scholarship. You are active duty naval reserve with orders to attend classes and graduate at the time you tell them you will. As for switching schools, that is an excellent question for a recruiter.
