Marriage and API/Flight School - Advice?

I'll echo what some of the still-married folks have said --being married is great, even in flight school. My wife is very supportive and very proud of what I do. She takes great interest in learning about what I do. She's too funny in that she even points out all the Navy planes in the sky...

I'm in the market for a good cell phone (need some fellow service member input)

It's more than liquid sex! I just watched Apple's video (78 min) and I cannot believe what they're doing with the iPhone. Even now, anyone can write code and applications for the iPhone. The new software update will be in June and it will be astonishing. Also, I think Skynet was just...

ASTB or Pilot written exam practice

Good find! People should start with the Private Pilot or Recreational Pilot exams and move up to the Commercial Pilot exam if they'd like. The other stuff probably won't be much use for ASTB studying.

    BDCP Tax

Talk to your recruiter and processor about getting set up with Mypay. It is a great system and it available to you while you're in BDCP. All your paystubs, W-2's and travel claims are available online there, amongst other things.

    Kingsville or Meridian?

I'm sure others mentioned this in the other thread, but it's not really your choice - the Navy is going to send you wherever they choose. I know several people that wanted Kingsville and got Meridian, and vice versa. On the other hand, I requested Kingsville and got it....

    OCS PRK Waiver Question

Short answer - no. You'll need to have the PRK taken care of, heal for a minimum of three months, get checked again by MEPS (just the eyes), and then they will submit a recommendation for a waiver. The actual waiver will not be submitted/approved until you get your full flight physical at OCS...

Temporary NPQ and looking for advice

Watching you at OCS - no and yes. I was across the street at API while you were at OCS, but did I watch your class and others pushing in the grass and sand, all the while laughing to myself at your collective pain? Absolutely. :D

Temporary NPQ and looking for advice

You mean you get away with using it after taps. Double check the OCR. Remember, if you screw up and get caught there is more at stake than just your personal well-being.... Imagine the following: Your DI: "Say 'thank you candidate shotcalla!'" Your Class (while pushing in the sand)...

    Good Starter Headset

I also recommend David Clark's - reliable, comfortable, and a great value. I've also flown with the Bose Aviation X a few times and they are extremely comfortable and quiet (ANR), but I'd be hard pressed to drop $1K on them....

Pilot Lands On Golf Course....Son Late To Tennis Lesson

I disagree. See specifically CFR 91.13 - Careless or Reckless Operation, and 91.119 (b)- Minimum Safe Altitudes over congested areas (which Lincolnshire is if you look it up on mapquest.) Personally, I think this was his last flight since the FAA isn't exactly nice about these types of...

    Military Aviation Major

Getting back on topic... I think that an aviation major, military focus or not, can help you in flight school. I graduated from University of North Dakota with Commercial Aviation and Air Traffic Control majors (dual major). I went into Primary with a little over 300 hours, CFI & CFII, and...

    Leadership at OCS

    Aerobatic training

Agreed. While I've only been up once in an Extra, it was so responsive that it made aerobatics much easier (much less finesse involved). I've flown aerobatics in a Great Lakes, Decathalon, Extra 300, and the T-34C. I enjoyed it the most in the Great Lakes (open cockpit biplane, tail dragger)...

Correct. I had PRK done after receiving my pro-rec. However, I was not officially Navy property at that time. I had very good timing and even better luck! Short answer--don't plan to have it done after getting selecting, especially after final select. If you want to do it, get it done before...
