Thousands of planes a year forced to use dangerous maneuver

What is this "go around" I keep hearing people refer to? I may have read about it once or twice in the FTI, but I've never actually had to perform one (too much risk you know!) AP fear mongering garbage.....typical

    BDCP process

I thought BDCP was too good to be true when I first heard about it, but it turns out that the program is all that and a bag of chips! Also, you were told once already so heed the advice- search the BDCP section of AW and use google. All of the information you're looking for is readily available...

    In the air with BDCP

Yeah, same here! I tried to get rides on KC-135's out of Grand Forks AFB, even had a retired Lt. Col. try to work some magic for me, but was still a no go. And the next nearest unit was the Happy Hooligans of the Fargo, ND ANG. They flew F-16A's at the time and wouldn't let me strap onto the...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Eye and face protection in case of ejection. Wind blast probably doesn't feel so great going from zero to 300 kts in an instant. And for the T-45, the canopy doesn't blow off like you've seen in Top Gun, it "melts" with mild detonating cord. Hot molten plastic and eyes do not mix well.

    Post Final Selection Benefits/Restrictions

Take a copy of your contract and talk to someone who knows what they're doing in financial aid. When they ask about your job in the military, tell them that you're active duty with orders to go to school, and that you don't receive any benefits like the GI Bill or the like. The FAFSA is a...

anyone who has been through OCS?

Yeah, you can show up and surprise him one Sunday morning at the chapel. Even if it is only for a few hours, it will make his day, week, and month like nothing you've seen in a while. And if you do that later on into OCS, say week 7 or later, you may get to spend Sat afternoon and Sunday with...

    Post Final Selection Benefits/Restrictions

    2) You can ask for military rates at hotels and on airlines. Sometimes they are a better deal, sometimes not. 3) If there is a base near by, you can get a DOD vehicle sticker for your car and use the on base facilities (Gym, NEX, Commissary, VX, BX, Medical, etc). You don't pay tax on items...

Abysmal Vision, what are my options?

It's not a big deal for OCS either. I'm in the same boat as NozeMan (had PRK, but still wear corrective lenses.) You need to have the surgery and all that healing jazz done before you'll get a pro-rec or final select notice.

Wondering how bad I've messed up...

Well from the tone of your post, you don't sound ready to apply yet but are willing to work towards getting a commission. Your extra curriculars are good. If you think you need more of them, then join more clubs next semester. As for your MIP ticket, you need to be honest about it and...

I was going to attach this to the original thread, but couldn't find it any longer (google search not an option on AW anymore ) The B-2 in question starts its roll at about 1:50 http://break.com/index/b2-stealth-bomber-crashes.html?matchid=NTE1MjA1">B2 Stealth Bomber Crashes</a>...

    Depth perception mega thread

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! The easiest way I can explain how I look at it is to relax my eyes, and kind of do a thousand yard stare (you know, looking far off in the distance but not really "looking".) I can usually get an image in a second or two. Again, I use the same technique for...

Temp. NPQ - Signing NFO Contract?

Why not go back to MEPS and redo the exam? Get the TNPQ taken care of at the source and get your SNA slot. I have a few friends who switched from SNFO to SNA, but it wasn't the easiest of things to do.

    BDCP Degree Plan

Oh, and never put extra courses that you don't need to graduate. It's easier to take an extra course here and there that you didn't put down than it is to skip a class that you told the Navy you would be taking on your ADCP.

    BDCP Degree Plan

Take your time and actually plan out your remaining semesters in a logical manner. If you plan it out right, you may not need to make changes later on. If you don't know what you have left, then talk to your counselor/advisor and get some help. The form isn't rocket surgery, so don't overthink it.

  29. nugget81

    Packet information prep for OCS

I would recommend that you not "drag your feet" and get it all done ASAP. The Navy is slow with these types of things, and at age 26 you have less time than most applicants. Only put SNA if that's what you want. Keep in mind that you can be final select and still decide not to accept the...

United and US Airways looking to merge

I just saw on the evening news that US Air, starting June 1st, will stop serving free snacks on all its flights because of "soaring fuels costs". But you can still get a refreshment for free. Looking for gouge? Ask your Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation here (Part 1)

When I did civilian flying in the North Dakota winter, I would use Oakley boots because they were waterproof, and had soft soles--which meant I could feel the rudder pedals better. However, after wearing the above pictured boots over the last year and change, it doesn't seem to make that big a...

    Scratched Cornea?

Same here. The eyes heal quicker than you'd think, but make sure there is no more sand in your eye and use the drops the doc gives you. You'll be fine and the Navy doesn't need to know unless you like extra paperwork and headaches.

    JPAS and Current Employer

Here's a thought....give your boss a head's up so he/she doesn't get blindsided. "Tyler so-and-so is doing what?!?" Explain your desire to become a Naval Officer. Most people tend to be understanding unless they are hippies.

    BDCP Final Select questions

I fail to see how my pro-rec would have anything to do with your chances, unless of course I took the last remaining slot ;) But seriously, the pro-rec is the biggest hurdle. Don't sweat the rest. But remember, you are about to join the ranks of the Navy, which means that it's time to hurry...

Pay increase for making Dean’s list

Just go by whatever your contract says. If it says "Dean's list" for two consecutive semesters, then you're good to go. If it says 3.75 GPA or above for 2 consecutive semesters, then take a look at your GPA and see where you're at. Talk to your recruiter and processor and make sure you get...

Why do you want to be a USN Officer? (long winded ramble)

I always wanted to fly, but when I was in high school I wanted nothing to do with the military. I went to college to learn to fly and become an airline pilot, but I began to realize that it wasn't as glorious a job as it seemed to be. All the meanwhile, I had a strong interest in military...

    Declined...kinda...

If you only want Intel, and want it badly enough, then turn the others down and reapply. If the other two sound like something you'd want to do, then accept one of them. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. We are adding cliches to our advice today, right? ;)

    PRK Paperwork

What I think he may be getting at has to do with vision degradation. If you're marked down as 20/15 and show up as 20/20 or 20/25, NAMI could give you some grief. However, that's just a guess. Thinking about it further, what does Col. Sanders mean by that statement? I was 20/20 after PRK...
