    Hurricane IKE

From the NASK meeting today, I gathered that we were mando-evac at 0800 Thursday and that NASCC & Ingelside were all on the same page.

    OCS @ Newport Unofficial Gouge

Dude, I think you'll be ok with some scratches. If I was able to have a cyst on my tailbone drained, have bronchitis then pneumonia and still graduate with my original class, then you'll be able to suck it up and keep your scratches from killing you...:sleep_125

    Hurricane IKE

While I agree with your post fundamentally, I would hate to get slowed down anymore than we've been already. Plus, having working parties or moving to Merdian is not my idea of a fun time. ;)

    CUBI CAT is BA-A-A-ACK ??

Are you telling me that the MOD shop on base doesn't have a control stick from one of our wrecked T-45's? Or do they reuse them? Maybe steal it from the Charlie cockpit trainer...they don't really need it anyway ;)

GUSTAV: Massive Evil Hurricane of Death! Panic!

Get this -- the LSU home opener was originally scheduled for Sat at 4:00pm, but has been moved up to 10:00am so people can attend the game and then evacuate. Talk about priorities...

What happens to an OCS drop out?

    Meh....reading comprehension is boring anyway.
  9. nugget81

What happens to an OCS drop out?

There's a flaw in your logic. You're not a commissioned Officer until you graduate OCS--you're an E-5 Officer Candidate. In fact, when you get ready to graduate, you sign a document that discharges you from enlisted service.

Burning questions about OCS, flight school and Navy life

There's a flaw in your logic. You're not a commissioned Officer until you graduate OCS--you're an E-5 Officer Candidate. In fact, when you get ready to graduate, you sign a document that discharges you from enlisted service.

    PT Uniform

I would have liked to see the Navy contract with UnderArmour or Nike Dri-fit. Each company makes a quality product in the colors that the Navy wants and all it would take is a quick silkscreen to make the clothing a "uniform". But that would have all been too simple....

    Normal Navy Operations?

Sure you could be, but why would you want to go to OCS before Christmas? Wait for a class after the holidays so you don't have to take a mandatory two weeks of leave and end up with a negative leave balance.

Standby for more trouble with the airlines?

Eddie, here's something you probably didn't know or think of: When the airline and union negotiate contracts, the airline management doesn't actually determine how much each pilot makes. They say "we'll give you a pie this big" and the union says how much of that pie each pilot gets. Of...

    Where to live in Kingsville?

Negative. And the base housing units aren't. They are PPV's (run by civilians, but under contract with the Navy.)

OCS - fail to complete aviation, get kicked out of the navy?

How high up the food chain does this go? I mean, will a first cruise nugget who gets an unfavorable FNAEB (I know, it's redundant) be sent packing? Is this Primary/API/IFS only?

    Airlines to Military?

According to CFR Part 61, an applicant would need at least 250 hours to apply for a Commercial Certificate. However, under an approved Part 141 syllabus, that number can be substantially less. I had a mere 210 hours total time when I received my Commercial Multi & Single ticket with Instrument...

  25. nugget81

    Airlines to Military?

To answer your question, it is completely possible to go from the airlines to the military. I can think of at least one guy flying T-45's who used to be an airline pilot, albeit not at the majors. Are you a US citizen? Do you have a bachelor's degree (major doesn't matter)? The answers need...

    NSS changes as of 04AUG08

GPS is all well and good, but there are too many student pilots (talking civilians here) that are GPS-cripples. What happens when the little magic box stops working because you just had an electrical failure? Pilotage & dead reckoning don't require electricity and are good knowledges to have.

    BDCP/Aviation Degree

What's with all the overachievers getting their degrees in 2 or 3 years? College isn't a race--it's a time to be enjoyed. I spent 5 years on my degree and I'm still doing just fine. :icon_tong Choose a field that seems interesting to you and run with it. Always have a backup plan or two in...

so disappointed- did worse after a month of pt

I always try to give my body a good 24-48 hours of rest (i.e., no PT) before a PRT/PFA. Even at OCS the DI would lay off from pounding us on the day before a PFA.

Anyone else see a roadtrip coming?

Well, more like Brownsville. The evac guide says we weather it at home if it's Cat II or less. Dolly isn't likely to make Cat III status at the speed she's moving. I imagine we'll fly the birds out tomorrow, but those of us without cloud cards and X's to get in BI's/RI's will likely stay...

    Selections coming up...

K-rock isn't that bad. As echoed above, Corpus is only 40 minutes away and is your typical place to go on weekends to actually do stuff (baseball games, the Lexington, Texas State Aquarium, etc). San Antonio and Austin are another 2-3 hours north and are within liberty limits. Time to train...

    PRK & BDCP Decision

Talk with your recruiter and make sure he/she's on board with your decision to get PRK and accept the SNA slot. You'll probably need to explain why you applied for a position you're not qualifed for (SNA with poor vision). However, it can and has been done before. After I was pro-rec'd SNA...

MUST SEE FILM: Operation Red Flag

Do what? Shoot off all our flares in an effort to look good for the camera? ;)
  39. nugget81

Standby for more trouble with the airlines?

Customer loyalty in the airline industry has more to do with pricing than anything else these days. Service is nonexistent among the US carriers. Perhaps SWA's "loyal customers" come from it being one of the cheapest, or best value if you will, airlines to fly one from Point A to Point B...

  41. nugget81

    Injuries while on BDCP

I went to school with a guy who busted his knee about a month before he was to ship off to OCS. The recruiter wasn't happy, but the date got pushed back, the guy healed up, and is now a winged aviator. Work with your recruiter and see the doctors if necessary.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

All of the above, and oh yeah, duty too. It's not a big deal, really. You work (depending on your squadron's scheduling office and policies) anywhere between 4 and 12 hours sitting behind a desk, answering phones, driving a van, or assisting an IP who's also on duty. If you're not scheduled...

  45. nugget81

    FAA physical and IFS

No, you misread. You do NOT need an FAA medical certificate to do Navy flight training. IFS is handled by civilian flight schools, and as such, fall under FAA rules. Therefore, you need an FAA medical certificate to do IFS, but not Primary and beyond. Also, regardless of what class medical...

    Contract Question

If money is that tight, consider the commissioning loan through USAA or Navy Federal CU. USAA loaned me, a few years ago, $25,000 at 2%. Payments were deferred until OCS graduation, interest was not. Be sure you can afford the additional monthly payments before doing it though.
