I applied not only for professional growth, but i want out of the command I am with!!! I do have a question for those OC's out there. Granted its anyones guess who will be picked up but when is a good time to at start applying to colleges? It would seem like if one gets picked up in October, it would be a hassle and a pain in the ass to then try and get accepted to a college and what not. Any ideas or lessons learned?

Being a FY04 STA-21 selectee himself, my ESO recommended I apply to my top pick school immediately and just defer my acceptance for one year (yes you can do that!). So I did and I now already have my acceptance letter in hand stating that I am accepted to enroll in the Fall 2008 semester!

Apply to your schools now. Don't wait until October/November because if you do happen to get deployed/TDY'd to a location that makes it difficult to apply, then you don't have to jump through hoops to get the paperwork done. Most of your initial acceptance letter/degree plan stuff needs to be in Pensacola around the middle of December.
Save yourself a few sleepless nights and take care of it now.

Applying to school

I waited until I got accepted to the STA-21 program, and my results were even delayed by the hurricane in pensacola a few years ago. You should have sufficient time to complete any physicals and applications after your picked up. It never hurts to start applying early, but just remember you also have to get a degree plan which shows you can complete school with in 3 years or 36 months. The plan must include 2 calc based physics, calc 1 and 2, and 2 upper level naval science courses NSC 401(XO's class) 402(CO's class). Also if a big part of why you are trying to go ST-21 is because you dont like your command. There are going to be plenty of other places you hate going in the NAVY. It comes with the territory.

Well, despite all the troubles getting my application through my command it finally got done. I added a couple more things to it too. Finished up Master Training Specialist since I first started this thread and just finished up my CFI, II, and MEI. Hopefully those will help my chances. My fingers are crossed right now though because I went on leave to do the flight training and while I was gone admin mailed my package off and it might not have been sent to the correct address so I'm waiting to hear back whether it is received. Good luck to everyone!

I hope that those of us being MTS qualified will give us a that extra inch to set us apart from the rest of the applicants.

From what I understand each board is different, but someone who sat on the '06 board showed me the instructions he was given as a board member. It outlined the entire point structure of how each application is "pre-scored" and what each item was worth. Then listed the discretionary items that the board members score. Basically after it's pre-scored, and two members review it (their scores have to be close or else someone else has to look as well) you end up with a final score. Now I was a non-sellect in '06 but I mentally scored my package while he let me look over the paperwork (he made me stay in his office and said I couldn't make a copy of it since I probably wasn't even supposed to see it). I ended up with about a 90 roughly, which is an arbitrary number except that he told me I was very close to the cutoff point for CORE. Obviously each year is going to have different candidates and there will be different scoring. But that had MTS worth the same as a warfare qual, which wasn't a huge point value, but it was at least something. That along with things like SAT score, Associates, has/has not taken calc, or calc based phys. were all pre-scored. The board members reviewing your package get to give you points based on your statement and other little things that you've done that don't fit in the categories of the pre-scored items. Anyhow, that's most of the gouge I have accumulated through hearsay on the whole process. But who knows if any of that info will be accurate for this years board. Right.

My package was received by STA-21 6/25/07. You are right, let the waiting game begin.
How many days did it take from where you were until you had confirmation? I'm wondering when I should get worried about mine. It got mailed on the 30th I think and still nothing. (from Hawaii)

It was sent off on a Monday and the following Monday they had received it. Are there any guys out there who are current OC's at Iowa State or planning to go to Iowa State?

Well, I found out why I haven't received any confirmation regarding the receipt of my package. The YN1 that mailed mine sent it to Great Lakes, IL...Now up until now I have really tried to give most yeoman the benefit of the doubt. But seriously, there is absolutely no excuse for being that incompetent! His excuse was that he looked up the address by what the cover letter said it was "TO:" but I can't figure that one out because it isn't even close to the command he decided to send it to. So needless to say there is a very good possibility that I could be completely screwed this year and out of the running.:icon_rage

Maybe not, there are exceptions to that deadline. A YN1 that screwed it up could potentially be one of those. Especially since they sent it while you were gone. May try calling Pcola to see if that's a possibility.

I would be on the Phone today trying to get something done. But perhaps the best bet would be to have your CO call. I'm sure he or she will have more clout when it comes to explaining his YN1's incompetence.

Okay so the plot thickens...While my DH was in the CO's office trying to explain why we sent the application to the wrong state and convince him to sign a letter explaining it all. The yeoman walks in and suddenly remembers he actually might have sent it to the right place. So I login to the STA21 website AGAIN and sure enough, they received it today...So how about wasting a whole bunch of time and running around for nothing. I should have just waited another day and never even talked to that guy.
