FY08 STA-21 Pilot Selectee/Currently at ODU
Hey everyone, I know it is early in the year still. But I thought I would take it upon myself to start a FY08 STA21 thread for all of this years upcoming applicants and their application statistics, as well as any advice or comments anyone else has to offer up. I guess I will start with mine. I'm still waiting on a few more things but this is it so far.

Applying Pilot, Core alternate
26yo 8 year enlisted nuke ET1(SS)
SAT: 1190 ASTB: 6, 5, 5, 55
Have an AS degree with 4.0 gpa and over 200 sh credit from navy and CLEP/DSST
A’s in Calculus I&II deans list at current school
LOR’s three O-6 (two former CO’s other ret. friend)
USMAP Journeyman ET license
Commercial license SEL, MEL, instrument (260 hours)
Ground instructor AGI, IGI

This is my third application (FY05, FY06). Prior apps had almost no college, no flight time. My detractor this year I think will be my age. I will be able to finish my degree way early though because I have so much credit already. I have basically exhausted my TA two years running.

Hey all, I'm applying for the FY08 STA-21 program as well. Like ET1, I'm still waiting on a few things, namely my ASTB score (just took it today) and my interviews, which are scheduled for next month. Here's what I've got so far:

Applying Pilot, Core alternate
24yo 6 year enlisted AEGIS FC2(SW)
SAT: 1220 ASTB: awaiting results
Have an AA degree with 3.0 GPA and over 60 sh credit from the Navy and prior schooling
LOR’s one O-4, one O-3 and two O-2's
1 NAM, 1 Flag LOC, ESWS
No PFA failures (minimum good mediums on all of them)
Evals: MP 3rd, MP 3rd, EP 3rd, EP frocked 2nd, waiting on current eval (either MP or EP 2nd as I'm currently ranked #2 or 3 out of 21 2nd's in my dept.)

This is my first application and I have no idea what to expect. I thought I looked pretty competative on paper until I saw my current ESO's package from the FY04 cycle. He was an AG1, selected 1st time up. His package included 4 EP's w/ 4.5 - 5.0 scores, LOR's from an O-7 and two O-6's, 4 NAM's, etc. I just hope that the majority of the applicants' packages don't look THAT good, or I'm facing a real challenge!

Got my ASTB scores, NOT happy at all!!!

Well, I got my ASTB results back today. I scored 5/5/5 and 48. I'm really not happy as these scores seem "average" and I hardly consider that competitive! I took form 4 this time and, since it was my first time, I can take it again (form 3 or 5) after May 23rd, which I'm going to. As long as I get my scores back in the same amount of time (two weeks) I'll be able to get them submitted with my package.

Ok I am not sure how many people know my story, but I applied four time and finally made it this past year. I am headed to NSI with EM1 later this month. My experience in this program shows that they want to see that you are trying. I had a recommendation from an 0-6, 0-5 and an a 0-4. The only one that really mattered was my prior CO's recommendation who was the 0-6. I have meet people that have made it on there first time up and it is not that uncommon and then there are guys like me who make it on the fourth time up. If anyone has any questions please feel free to IM me. I had ASTB scores of 5/4/5 52 ans SAT of 1170. So just mediocre. I think everyone needs to have something in there package that makes them stand out, not everything has to be stellar. My low points were my scores and the fact that at a sea going command I was only able to take two college classes, but I received 4.0 in both. However, I carried good recommendations, strong evals, I was qualified EWS as a second, and I showed a lot of commitment.

Man I kinda wished I applied this year but its too late now as my command cuts off applications in May. I came into the Navy wanting to be a mustang but after being out in the fleet am having second thoughts about staying Navy. Maybe something will happen to convince me to stay Navy and ill apply next year. I remember coming to these boards in Nov 2004 as a DEP recruit full of Navy dreams. Good luck to all

I think any enlisted commissioning programs is the way to go. I would definitely suggest atleast giving it a try.

Getting Picked Up

Squiduttah is on the right track. I think the most important think to getting picked up is your statement, CO's endorsement, officer board write ups, and their ability to rank you. I got picked up in 04 for STA-21 CORE and did the 6 month BOOST and NSI thing. I only applied 1 time and had no college credits, a 1020 SAT, no ASTB,no letters of reccomendation from outside sources, but a fair amount of awards. I suggest putting CORE as your soul option to get your foot in the door if your main goal is to become an officer. If you know your stuff the selection thing will fall into place when you get done with college. The instruction used to say a CO endorsement should only be one page, however I made mine almost two. Make it sound like you can walk on water. I also suggest applicants check the command NC's office for example packages that were submitted and accepted.

Well that makes me feel a bit more confident about my chances of getting selected! I have pretty much finished my package at this point, I just have to complete my command PFA next week and get the results from PRIMS and then I'll be able to send my package off to the selection board!

I have to say that, while I don't want to get my hopes to high and set myself up for disappointment, I am feeling pretty good about my chances. Both of my interview boards went REALLY well...I expected my board at my own command to go well as I'm on a small boy and I'm well known and liked by the CoC here. It was my "off ship" board that I was really pumped about, because my ESO (FY04 STA-21 selectee, 1st time applying) sat in on the board and said I blew them away and that my board went better than his! The board members were an O-6 NFO (F-14's), O-5 SWO and O-3 PILOT (SH-60's), so I hope that will help my chances of getting selected as a PILOT option candidate.

I'll keep you guys posted!! Good luck to all the other applicants for this year's program!

Glad to hear that your boards went so well. It has been a slow process for me. You would think that the third time applying would make the process go much faster and smooth. But it has been a pain dealing with a large shore command and trying to explain what you need to get done when the CCC drops the ball every chance they get.

I'm sorry to hear that you are not getting the support you deserve from your CoC, that's got to be frustrating!

My package should be mailed Monday, then the waiting game begins!

My package was received by STA-21 6/25/07. You are right, let the waiting game begin.

My package was mailed off yesterday afternoon so hopefully the screeners will receive it by the end of the week!

Talk about nerve racking! I'm going to go crazy these next few months waiting for the results!

Good luck to everyone else that's applying!

It's June 27th and no one is posting questions about STA-21?! Must be making effective use of the search function. :D

Good luck to all the applicants this year.

That, or the amount of applicants has declined yet again. Only better than 800 last year, makes me wonder why the hell that is.

Take my word for it being a fleet sailor currently... I can see where the lack of motivation comes from!

For me though, I've got my "eyes on the prize" and I'm looking long term at the big picture with regards to my career. I want to finish my education and get my commision and retire at 30 years as an Admiral (if at all possible!).

So at this point in time, I think anybody applying for the program is either like me or just trying to escape their current plight!
