Does Navy pay for FAA certs/ratings?

AFROTC Cadet thinking about crossing over...

So, Mr Cracker Jack,... do the Navy Boys still wear their Dixie Cup? That's very cute. And, jink all you want, but: Soap-on-a-rope = Navy.

    Buffett visits Truman

I'm sure everyone knows this, but it's pretty cool that JB is also an accomplished seaplane pilot. He had a bad crash about 10 years ago,... I think it was in his Albatross. Anyone know if that's the same plane that's on static display in Orlando?

AFROTC Cadet thinking about crossing over...

I'll spare you the abuse of all the Aggie jokes. What strikes me is this: with 150 flight hours, you should be doing much better than an 80/78 in the pilot/nav. Go take an instrument ground school; I'm assuming you haven't done so. Does A&M offer an Inst Ground School class? If so, it's...

    Navy vs Air Force

Squire, Sounds like you've got the right attitude, and will make this rivalry a good time. Enjoy. Being a Navy ROTC type, you could always figure some way to make fun of USAF scarves,.. or "ascots", in Navy-speak. Being an old fighter guy, he probably wore one.

    Navy vs Air Force

Oh boy: another post on making USAF jokes. I'm so excited to see how this pans out. :icon_slee I look forward to these threads like a sharp stick in the eye. :banghead_ AirSquire, just curious: what did he fly, and what years was he on active duty? What school are you at?

    UnRetire?

It's a waste of great resources that they don't do this more in critical career fields. The USAF does have some "reserve retirees", including active pilots. A former student of mine retired, and came back on as a T-38 IP for about 5 days a month at Vance. For those 5 days, he gets full...

    FAA Medical Certificates FYI

This is all part of the rewrite to Part 61. When I spoke to the FAA MFWIC in DC, he stated that this was expected to become reality on 10 Sept 08. I have subsequently heard a rumor that the timeline could be accelerated.

    Deployed and Current Aviator Thoughts?

On the subject of the Galeb shootdowns, there were the three you mentioned, plus a 4th that was bagged by "Yogi" Allen, a friend of mine. Also in that 4-ship of Vipers was Scott O'Grady. The jets shot down were probably the single-seat variant of the Galeb, but I don't know for sure. The...

    Deployed and Current Aviator Thoughts?

Never met him, but have read the accounts of his 3 shootdowns. And I admit I'm really downplaying a nice achievement. I'd heard he was/is an excellent fighter pilot, nice guy, and professional. I certainly don't want to come across in a negative personal light. I toast to his success. My point...

    Armstrong Pullups

Michael Colgan has a book called "The New Power Program". A great read. Some of the guys started up on his program, and got me into it. He doesn't have much nice to say about using machines, with a few exceptions. Through his website, the book is $50, but I got it at Amazon for cheap...

    Armstrong Pullups

Ha! Can't believe it!! If this is the same "Major Armstrong", I was an AFROTC cadet while he was a Marine ROTC instructor. I was the only AF guy that sometimes showed up to his morning workouts. The guy was an animal, and calling him "intense" was an understatement. Drove around in a Camero that...

    FunnyPowerPoint cover sheets

OK, I've searched AW high and low, and can't find that thread where someone posted the funny cover sheets to use in the office; it had a .ppt file with them. The sheets were "Futile", "Stupid", "Ludicrous", etc... If you know where it is, please post the link.

    Supplemental Flight Training

Depends on your goal. Are you going to moonlight while doing CFI/freight/commercial/whatever work? Do you have the $$$ to spend easily? Or is it a stretch? Definitely get some instrument training. But how about using some of the $$$ for aerobatic training. Go down to Santa Paula for spin...

The term "haole" (however you spell it) comes from the Hawai'ian tradition where two men will meet, touch foreheads together, and then stand back and deeply inhale,... sort of breathing in one's essence. When they met the Westerners who did not do this, the term came about, as pointed out...

    Deployed and Current Aviator Thoughts?

Pardon my thread tangent: The USAF had a guy get two air-to-air kills during Kosovo. Plus he got one in the Gulf War. I heard they flew his ass off in the hope he could get two more and become an ace. However, I don't consider an Eagle shooting down a Serbian MiG to be much more than me going...

    BOQ REVIEW's

It's not really a "VOQ", although they call it that. And it's no longer an active duty military base. But the "VOQ" at Ellington Field's (Houston, Texas) Southwest Services is a great deal. $25 for a good room, access to the bar (where there beers are under a buck and there's food); internet...

    Winging Card???

Can any of you guys post a photo of what this card looks like? I'm curious. In the USAF, get a nice, diploma-looking document (suitable for framing!) stating we are now rated pilots, but no card to accompany it.

Looking for gouge? Ask your Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation here (Part 1)

Depends, I suppose, but in the case of the F-22, there are at least 3 squadrons flying now, and the first student out of pilot training to go to the F-22 still hasn't gone to training yet.

    Red Arrows video

Seems like we've had a lot of discussions, photos, and videos of the Blues and TBirds. Here's a decent one of the Red Arrows, set to some music by Juno Reactor. The video is a touch shakey at times, but it's good. Their 9-ship stuff is just great. The variety they put in the shows is very good...

The guy in Driggs, ID is Doc Sugden. He wasn't a Naval Pilot,... er, sorry,.... Naval Aviator,... but he was a Naval Flight Surgeon and did a fair amount of flying. Medical for Civ Flying

In the USAF, we usually have 1 or 2 flt docs at each base that have gone through the FAA course in Ok City, and are capable of giving you a Class II in conjunction with your annual. Unlike the responses given here, it's a benefit that they don't hide from us. You just have to ask. Starting...

    Blues Video

Last year, BA#7 was at the Mather Airshow, and it was unattended on the Friday morning prior. We went over to put some U-2 zaps in the wheel wells (didn't want to do anything that the public would see). The wheel wells were so oily with oil/hydro fluid that we couldn't get any zaps to stick...

Another military poser/faker goes down on the net

Folks, just leave it alone. It's done; the horse has been beaten. And besides: if you're not familiar with the lawsuit that took place a few years ago on avweb.com, it's a good example of how a website AND the individuals that post on it are quite vulnerable. Would be a shame to bring...
