    Buying a Piper Cub

That .xls spreadsheet is good stuff. Thanks. I figure this is the best way to get my taste of aircraft ownership. The other 4 guys have all owned aircraft, we've already got a "man cave" hangar, and the aircraft is pristine. Hacker, Yeah, I want something like a CJ or Yak. The Cub was...

    Buying a Piper Cub

Looks like me and some others are going to buy a '46 Piper Cub. Any of you out there ever owned a Cub? If so, comments? Observations? Things to look out for? Also, what did you find the operating costs to be, i.e. how much per hour for your "maintenance reserve"?

Aero 101 - ask your burning questions here

No, there was no sarcasm intended. In the Deuce, pushing rudder gives you yaw,... only yaw. No roll. There is no stab-aug system either, as the flight controls are just like you'd find on a Piper Cub: cables and pushrods from the yoke to the surfaces, and no hydraulics. If you push full...

Aero 101 - ask your burning questions here

Well, you taught me a new term: proverse roll. I'll have to go read up on that one now, as I've never heard of it.

Aero 101 - ask your burning questions here

It's completely wrong. "Adverse yaw" is produced by the ailerons. When you roll, one aileron goes up, the other goes down. The one going down produces "induced drag", which is drag caused by an increase in lift, and makes the aircraft yaw into the down aileron. Example: I roll left, but the...

How Are Mustangs Viewed In the Officers Ranks?

If I may give a USAF perspective, I'll start by saying we don't even have a term like "Mustang". I'm only aware of it from my extensive time hanging around Navy bases (ok, save the jokes for later) and my many Navy/Marine friends. In my experience, no one views it negatively. They judge you...

There is no option for #2, unless you join the Strato-Shitters Club. As I mentioned, it damages the suit. Additionally, if you do not elect to RTB, you could end up with some skin problems from sitting and stewing in your own feces. This is especially true, and has happened, following a...

    Nellis Air Show

Quite simple, actually. When crewed by all men, it's a very masculine sign, as indicated by the 4 "appendages" sticking up in the air. Women find this attractive. However, it does show some immaturity, as each one appears to be trying to out do the other. And despite the two large...

Nose, When doing the USAF-fighter-gay-bashing, at LEAST try to get the aircraft right: albino F-15 pilots are the gay ones. Just remember the phrase "Twin-tailed butt pirates". Applies to the F-18 too, I hear. Don't know about the Tomcat community. The rest of the single-tail community is...

Gents, I'm "on the road", and just logged on. I'll follow up to your questions next week. 10:1 odds? You lose. No diaper. It does about $20,000 damage to the suit to join the "Strato-Shitters Club". Diarrhea can make it much worse. But, like I tell my students, it's just like sitting on a...

OK, OK,... good points from all of you. "Boring" patches? Hmmm,... not sure I agree, but you might be right on some accounts. We DO get to see a lot of YOUR patches on the leather jackets that Naval Flyers wear: I'll bet you have to change the weight and balance due to all the patches on the...

I'll avoid a 4-page thesis on this. Bottom line, the U-2 is scheduled to be done Oct 2012. HOWEVER,... as the 2010 budget is built and finished, expect to see it slipped another year. And a year from now, I wouldn't be surprised to see this process repeat. Personally, I'd guess 2015. NASA...

Sure, there are a bunch of T-28's still flying. I was the airshow announcer for the tiny Lincoln Airport Days last weekend here in Northern CA, and we had four T-28's. Generally, it seems the TBirds flew a bit higher. I never noticed them being further. But, since my friends brother was on the Blues for 3 years, and we travelled via T-38 to a lot of their shows, I've seen the Blues a bunch more than the T-Birds. And as such, I'm much more familiar with...

SuperBug demo: I agree, most excellent. Being a bigger platform than the Viper or older Hornets sure helps, I think, but the BIG pitch changes going into the negative 3G jinks sure makes for a crowd pleaser. Was "Tina" Turner the demo pilot? As for the F-22, New Orleans is their only...

Each MFD can display any info. The display on the left in the photo is showing engine data: RPM, EGT, hydro press, oil press, fuel, etc... With 3 MFD's, most pilots put that on the right display. The center is your HSI/ADI and other Nav data. MB, a big guy like you might have some issues...

Here's the one I was looking for. Found it in my backup hard drive. You'll notice there are only 2 MFD's in the jet. We now have three: the old RWR scope on the right has been replaced. Iraqi Pilot Training

The USAF is starting to send pilots to Iraq to teach the new Iraqi air force to fly. The assignments are 1 year, and you're flying in a Cessna 182 or 206. Are any of you Navy/Marine types getting assigned to flying tours similar to this?

N.A. landings at USAF bases (hopelessly threadjacked x3..and counting)

No, only when the Navy's in port, and decides to stop by and visit. We plan on being cross country on those days. Why do we avoid the Club then? Because the only training we have with soap-on-a-rope is to avoid socializing with sailors during liberty call. And when visiting our O'Clubs...

I think you'll find they won't fly as low, like on the sneak attack pass (the Blues fly that low!), thanks to Mother USAF rules, the history of which goes back to the 80's. But I think you'll find there's a bit less "dead time" between maneuvers while the delta and solos maneuver. Also, the...

Maybe a "classic" for pimply faced 18-year olds. The adolescent humor in American Pie was so bad, I only made it about 15 minutes into the movie. Based on what I've heard, I won't even bother with Superbad.

Blue Angels at San Francisco Fleet Week 2007

I wasn't there this year, but in past years, the solo goes over the top of the bridge, with a pretty aggressive bunt to low altitude. There's a bunch of great pics from past years floating around with the shockwave forming on the solo during the sneak attack pass.
