Support your local club part XVII

I was the biggest supporter of my Club on Friday nights. I was the one that got everyone down there, playing crud, breaking stuff (which we always paid for), playing the music too loud, getting the wives/girlfriends to dance on the bar, etc... But the Club has to meet me part way. Bottom line...

    Navy ETHOS

As I've mentioned before, we have a lot of interservice transfers from the Navy. I learned early on that if I used the term "shipmate" to them, I better follow it up with something nice to say. ;)

    No-notice checkride?

Yes, we do no-notice checkrides in the USAF. Mainly on new guys, after they've been around 9-12 months; after an upgrade to IP; after some "bad" event. As Vick says, yes, there are a percentage of checkrides that we like to ensure are no-notice. As a new O-2, I got my first no notice as a low...

F-35B/C Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter)

I got to fly the F-35 sim up in Ft Worth 2 years ago. WAY easy to fly and hover. However, the Marine Test Pilot (F-18 background) said that Harrier guys hate the logic used in the software.

    VFR Stamp -- Urban Myth?

I've never heard of it in the USAF, but I seldom ever get a Dash 1,... unless the Navy/Marine base I'm trying to depart requires it to file my flightplan.

The Tomcat Legacy; 35+ years from Fleet Air Defender to Recce to Precision Strike

The pilot of the RF-4 came through Randolph T-38 PIT back around '94 or '95. I was an IP there, and he gave his version of the story to us while showing us the Tomcat video. I don't remember enough details as clearly as I should, but needless to say, his version is very harsh on the Tomcat...

    Top Gun ICEMAN costume patches

Here's one where you Navy boys are going to take some grief from an Ascot-wearing USAF pilot: I distinctly remember many times in the Auger Inn, seeing Navy pilots in there with polos worn under their flightsuits. I'm guessing it was a "TDY thing",... at least I hope that's all it was,... but...

No Yoke? A-380 360deg Cockpit Camera

Around '94, United was the launch customer for the 777. Since the more senior UAL pilots were the ones involved in working with Boeing on some of the details, the story goes that these senior pilots all came from yoke (not "yolk"; it's not an egg) equipped aircraft, and that's what they were...

military discounts at ski resorts - 2008

Near Squaw is a small place called Homewood. They used to do free military tickets, but you'll need to check. Also, call the Beale AFB Outdoor Adventure Center (ask Beale operator, 530 634 3000, for the number): they should have good info.

    PAR approaches?

We do this at our Detachments, as a backup. But, RADALT??.... what's that????? Oh, that's something they put on jets that weren't designed 53 years ago!
  17. HuggyU2

    PAR approaches?

True. We don't wear an equivalent to your SV-2. Our LSE is in the seat kit.
  18. HuggyU2

    PAR approaches?

Great idea! Unfortunately in my aircraft, there's a rubber handle on the front of the ejection seat I have to pull to get to it. Doh!! :icon_wink

  22. HuggyU2

    PAR approaches?

The USAF has always lived by ILS,... and we're slowly becoming a GPS community, too. PAR equipment in the CONUS is going the way of the dodo, as combat controller units need the parts. Personally, if it's down to mins, I would only do a PAR with Navy controllers. USAF controller just don't...

    UAVs for UPT Grads

This is a short term solution. The USAF has been working to figure out how to implement the "UAS pilot" career path, separate from a traditional "pilot" career path. I don't know what happened in the last 2 years to slow this down: it was supposed to have happened already. I'm guessing...

"Firearms" is probably the best forum for knives, right? Anyways, I'd like to know if anyone has owned/used Benchmade automatic knives. In particular, how about the "Infidel"? Lone Wolf and Microtech are two brands I know nothing about: if you do, please chime in there too.

    Hurricane IKE

I heard the storm surge is 18'. I think the house is at 22', though. It sits right on the back gate of NASA about 2 miles inland from the water. Galveston is without electricity, and flooding.

    Hurricane IKE

I grew up under the traffic pattern at Ellington Field. My dad always had us ride the storms out. My mom's still there, and won't leave. Looks like the eye will pass right over her. I'm getting updates from her. She said the top of the Hilton there on Clear Lake blew off within the last hour.

    Proposed change to FAR 61.73

Update: I spoke with HQ FAA today. The 10 Nov 08 is the date the new rule is released,... however it doesn't get "implemented" for another 60 days after that. I don't get it, but they say it's some sort of law. Bureaucratic process, I guess.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Sweeeet! I've had to make "speed adjustments" to shack my timing before, and like you said, no one from the FAA every said a word. Even WRT the USAF, the only guys I've heard of getting bad face time were the ones that went LOW. In the USAF, we can only make 1 pass (there are a few exceptions)...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

As per FAR 91.119, "... over any open air assembly of persons...", it's 1000' above the hightest obstacle within a 2000' horizontal radius. Speed would be 250 KIAS, unless your manuals prescribe higher. For example, 300 KIAS is listed in the T-38 flight manual, so that's what we use. Now...

    Navy vs Air Force

Around '97, me and some of the other U-2 IP's were drinking Scotch, and brainstorming some way to improve our manning. We thought about and Exchange Program, but knew that took too long, and too much coordination. Finally, someone said "how about just offering pilots from other Services the...

    Bye Bye Buckeye

Too bad to see it go. I got an orientation flight in a T-2 at Meridian, and the pilot was qualified for "out-of-control flight" (is that the right term?). El Douge is correct. I led in a 4-ship,... er,... division,... of T-38's. I flew the U-2ST out today. AF Counterterrorism Funds Spent On "Comfort Capsules"

The guy that ejected himself while holding short (trying to unpin the seat) is a good friend of mine. Yes, he's a big guy, and he walked away with no injuries. The initial cadre T-6 guys that I know (including a Marine) say the USAF (don't know if Navy was included too) wanted it to be "like...

    Navy vs Air Force

Fog: reference your post on the previous page, the leadership isn't too concerned anymore with having "fun". They simply want the mission done well, without losing a $328M single-seat fighter, or overflying a sovereign country's denied airspace. Don't get me wrong. I'm a crew dog like you, and...
