    t-38 instructor tour

The 560th FTS (T-38) at Randolph AFB used to have a Navy pilot in their squadron when I was in it. I haven't heard of one there in a while, but maybe the program still exists, although dormant. For the 560th Commanders office, try DSN 487-3412.

Military / Aviation gems from the past...

Indeed. Certainly, it was the day of "iron men and wooden ships". I'm getting checked out in an SNJ now, and I look at that picture and try imagine going to fight the enemy, in that type of aircraft, in the middle of the ocean,... and probably at the ripe old age of 22. Most of the folks in DC...

    Airspeed! Airspeed!

My bud is seaplane rated, and he says the calm lake probably contributed. Apparently, when it's very glassy, it can add a significant amount to your takeoff distance. Maybe Mr Beaver didn't have the experience to take that into account. By the way, the Navy flies a Beaver (maybe two)...

    CAI's...circa 1953

Seeing as I'm going to get checked out in an SNJ, I was going to buy these videos from an online source. If you can find the other 5, I won't have to! Yes, I'm a cheap-ass pilot. Speaking of rudders, I flew a Great Lakes today for the first time. My rudder technique needs improvement...

    Flying Suspended At Vance

When Uncle Sam signs a contract, they know going in that a strike is a possibility. They take that risk. If they don't want that, stay with Blue Suit, or use civil service (can they strike?); or figure out some way to write into the contract that if said company's workers strike, they...

Flight Suit Pen Pockets suck for Lefties

I hear you, Fester. I had a guy in my squadron doing a Functional Check Flight in the T-38. He was up around 20000', with the power back in idle. Did some unloads, G'd it up, and worked into the next event: an aft stick stall. Well, he falls a few thousand feet, and when he goes to recover...

Flight Suit Pen Pockets suck for Lefties

Yes, Brett, FOD is a big deal in Big Blue, too. I've dropped a pencil at least once in my career. It never ended up being more than a couple of minutes to find after landing. Worst case, we fashinioned a stick with duct tape to get the pencil, since it was all the way back behind the ejection...

Flight Suit Pen Pockets suck for Lefties

In your opinion. I wouldn't consider that a FOD hazard at all. The string's an option, if you can't handle the pocket, I suppose. Makes a nice missile if you eject. As for the "shitty kneeboard": not sure what you're issued, but our thin plastic ones are that way for a reason. The big metal...

$9 Cheap Seats on JetAmerica and other cattle car stories ...

Reminds me of a story. A few years back, my daughter was about 5, and she, me, and my wife all got different seats. My wife asked the guy sitting next to my 5 year old if he would change seats with her. He wasn't interested. My wife paused, then said to my daughter "Honey, if you need...

We did a short notice wake on Friday. Really good for everyone. A couple of the U-2 pilots here were very good friends with Mark from their days at El Forko Grande. Lots of good stories were told. Check out www.markdashgraziano.com There's a bunch more photos and videos they want to load...

    T-38 Crashes in Southern California

The T-38 pilot killed was a U-2 pilot we sent to TPS. He was about halfway through the course. He really was a "mad scientist". Converted his piece-of-crap car to run on vegetable oil. Could build just about anything.

    AF-One Terrorizes New York City!!!

I know that "The Greatest Generation" would shake their heads in disgust, when considering the media coverage, and those who were "scared". VFR sectionals are always better for this. The terrain shading, depiction of airports and various airspace, freqs,... it's one-stop-shopping. Plus, look at the date of TPC chart. It's probably 10 years old. I've almost got burned once on a low level route where I didn't have a sectional...

    Eliminate AF? NYT Op-Ed

YGBSM, however, I think I'll just avoid the bait. The problem is what defines the "up" part: we've seen plenty of senior officers that made it "up", at the expense of others who are "out"... and many of those "others" are the ones that I consider "warriors". Today, I weigh about 192, and I...

Beale AFB Airshow - 18-19 April

Today: no "routines" flown. Just media rides, mainly with Patriots in the L-39. Tomorrow is practice day, but not open to General Public. Should have good view on North Beale Road, or Hammonton-Smartsville. I'll be in the announcer section all day Sat/Sun.

Beale AFB Airshow - 18-19 April

Well I never did get a T-45 or Super Hornet for the show. And my Marine CH-53 cancelled today. Also lost my C-130 (Coast Guard), HH-65 (USCG again), and C-23 (Army Guard). But the lineup is still pretty impressive.

Beale AFB Airshow - 18-19 April

Head's up: media day will be at Lincoln Airport, starting around 1300. The Patriots will actually arrive at 1100, which was a last minute change. Not sure if we'll be able to move things earlier. They will make passes over Beale, but stage out of Lincoln. Once done, they'll fly over to...

The Great Cats and Dogs on Aircraft Carriers Thread . . . with F-16 insanity!

I stand corrected. I didn't watch the video, and was going off of memory. The USS America was used for the U-2R test work. All the video appears to be a U-2C (actually, a G, which is a C modified for carrier work). The C/G had a wingspan of around 80' whereas the -R model has a 104' wingspan...

The Great Cats and Dogs on Aircraft Carriers Thread . . . with F-16 insanity!

Close, but no cigar. It's the America. And the reason there are so many Navy/Marine aviators is because back in '97, me and 5 other guys sat in a room on a Friday with a bottle of Scotch, trying to figure out a way to get more aviators into the U-2. Exchange program? No way. That's a...

If true, their wings should be permanantly revoked. Nothing against the Pred/Reaper community: I went out there last week, and got the "behind the scenes tour". Very cool stuff they are doing. But to avoid what they perceive is a "POS"? Well, they have lost the joy of flight while still...
