Drunk man takes plane for joyride

You're right,... I meant Kyle. Amanda married to Kyle Amanda and Matt are siblings. Jimmy and Bobby were best friends. Clear as mud?? ...and that picture does not do her justice.

Drunk man takes plane for joyride

That's Kyle Franklin, son of the late, great Jimmy Franklin. Jimmy was the guy in the J-85 Jet-Powered Waco. If you saw it, you'd never forget it. And Kyle was the teenage kid back in the 90's that was his wingwalker. In that video, the guy he steals the airplane from is Matt Younkin... and you...

    Best Air Force Joke/Insult

Certainly, you've heard of how each of the Service "secures the building"? It's a good dig at us in the USAF.

Not Navy, but a great piece of aviation - U2

Not exchange tours, but we have a bunch of U-2 pilots that did interservice transfers from the Navy/USMC/USCG. It's a pretty eclectic mix of aviators... truly The Land of Misfit Toys.

Not Navy, but a great piece of aviation - U2

Yes, the glasses have much larger lenses to improve your peripheral vision in the suit. The frames do not have earpieces, but velcro onto the face seal of the helmet.

Flying for Navy, Marines or Air Force?

This is a very cliche'd comment, that is beginning to lose relevance with time, although there is some truth to it. However, I know and work with enough Naval, Marine, and CG aviators that have flown in the USAF to have a pretty good idea of where this cliche falls apart. From a personal...

Cessna makes emergency landing at navy base

One of our U-2 pilots,... a former Naval Aviator (H-46, H-3, T-34 background),... was flying his 1937 Bucker Jungemann from Virginia to Beale when he PCS'd back. Over Tucson, the engine came apart. The Bucker doesn't glide well but he saw Davis-Monthan under his nose, and was able to just...

    Proposed change to FAR 61.73

Yep. The FSDO's are very different. Even within a FSDO, you'll get a different answer, depending on who you ask. If that local FSDO tells you something you don't like, pick up the phone and call one in Montana, or Utah. You will eventually get the answer you want.

    Proposed change to FAR 61.73

MasterB, Are you or are you not designated as an IP in your rotary aircraft? If so, you qualify. If the FSDO says no, educate them or shop around. The FAA doesn't speak "NATOPS". You will need to show documents that prove the Navy considers you an IP. Part 61 says nothing about having to be...

    Proposed change to FAR 61.73

FonF: Yes, I see your point. I'm guessing, but I suppose you could it either way, e.g. take the MCI, or take the FOI, FAI, and Instrument exam. If that's the case, the best route is taking 1 test with 125 questions. The MCI has plenty of FOI material on it. Recommend you go to...

    Proposed change to FAR 61.73

FlyinOnFumes: incorrect. It is spelled out in the new FAR Part 61. There is a new test for this: it's called the "MCI" test. You don't take just the FOI. Your FSDO should have a received documentation on all of this. Also, it's not "loose". You bring in your military paperwork that shows what...

    Proposed change to FAR 61.73

This change to Part 61 was implemented last week. Has anyone gone and gotten their CFI/MEI/CFII with the Mil Comp Test? I've waited so that that Sheppard Air study gouge would be paired down: it's down from around 1600 questions to around 550. Should have this knocked out as soon as I can...

    Teaching T-45 turning rejoins

T-45 IP's: you're teaching turning rejoins to a student. You are in a left hand turn, around 30 degrees of bank, and they are going to rejoin to the outside of the turn. Anyone willing to "talk me through it"?

What is the deal with PARs?

Folks that write NATOPS/Dash-1's don't usually understand what "practicable" means. As we've seen, it doesn't mean "practical". Example: while it might be practicable to sends kids to school in a hot air balloon, it isn't practical. Our normal EP phrase is "land as soon as conditions...

What is the deal with PARs?

In the USAF, we are required to file an alternate (and have the fuel to do it), when "radar is required for the only suitable approach". So, if there is only the PAR, then we'd have an alt.

    Questions for the CFIs thread

I've worked with the Sacramento FSDO for sometime on airshow and warbird stuff. They do a good job, and I've been able to build a rapport with them that will hopefully last a long time.

The nice thing about FSDO's is that there are many of them. If you don't get the answer you want, call another one.

    Questions for the CFIs thread

Well, if you flew "high performance" as the PIC prior to 4 Aug 97, you don't need the endorsement. If after that date, I'd be willing to bet that your military flight records suffice. There are numerous places in the FAR's where it mentions that mil records are adequate. Ask your FSDO...

Private pilot license with military hours?

Agreed. If you do "acro", then you're an "acrobat". I, for one, think of an "acrobat" as one of the little girls in my daughters gymnastic classes. I don't look good in tights, and don't put my hair in a bun. I'm not an "acrobat".

Ave8tor, Sorry to have missed you! I'll be at Reno with,... I know you'll be shocked,... a black T-38. In this case, the reporter was warned not to go to the site, due to hostiles. He chose to ignore it. The fact they lost a Special Forces soldier to save this guy is a tragedy. Had he done what he was told, it would have been avoided. And this reporter will probably end up on Oprah...

    FAA Military Equivalency Test

Jarhead, I might be wrong, but I think that with respect to a "pilot" certificate, very little has changed (other than the 12 month rule). So,... getting the CFI certificate won't help. You must still get a pilot certificate. The easiest was is to do the Mil Comp. If you are a Hornet pilot...

Top Gear rides the Dragon Lady

Yes, they come from other platforms first. Including student in training, Wing leadership, and the staff guys that get a flight every couple of months, there are about 85 - 90 pilots at any given time. About 862 have flown it since 1955.

The second pilot interviewed, with the mustache, is Duster, and some of you might know him. He flew the EA-6B at Whidbey from around 1996-2000 as one of the USAF pilots there. And Schnugg is correct: many of the guys put music though their ICS. We have rigged up an interface that goes between...
