Close to wings but thinking about switching communities

My first four years in the USAF were in Del Rio Texas, on the Mexican border. Nothing much there. I had a blast. Doesn't matter where you go to fly. You're getting to fly.

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

The SWA terminal in San Diego has got to be the worst terminal in the US. Glad to see them finally building a new one.

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

There is no pilot shortage. Unless you're working at USAF Personnel. If that's the case, yes... you have a serious f'in problem.

Dr Frank Dully “Sex and the Naval Aviator”

I'm fairly certain this is the guy that came and spoke to all of the pilots at Laughlin AFB when I was a student pilot many moons ago. Wow.

    Aircraft's loving nicknames

Swanee, I came across this post from 2008. Thought I'd add on to it. On Thursday, I took the only flying A-37 in North America into the air for the first time in 9 months. She flew great! Did a couple maintenance flights, then took her to Idaho where she will be for the summer. This one is...

    Going back to (flight) school

Dude! There has got to be someone with a CFI ticket that you know that can go grab a $100 hamburger in the Cub with you and call it good. If I lived near you, I'd be your Huckleberry.

    BZ to the Ace

As a side note, this is the last year for the A-10 Demo. The AF wants to kill the Hawg, so why put it in the spotlight at an airshow? The last show will be Huntington Beach, CA on 5-6 October 2024.

    BZ to the Ace

Flash, I asked around, and as it turns out, I know the pilots of the A-10 and the F-16. Funny story: The picture is from when he was the USAF A-10 Demo pilot, and that was the jet he brought to the shows. At some point during the season, he and the F-16 Demo pilot mixed it up in the MOA, and...

    IR Helo crash?

Thanks for posting that! I'll dig to see if I can get the background story. My guess is this is a one-off, with some comedy background to it. Like a Navy sky penis.

    BZ to the Ace

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I've never seen or heard of this in the AF. I asked in"the other" forum and neither had they. One guy did mention an A-10 unit that put an F-22 kill on their Hawg just to wind up the Raptor folks. But no one in the USAF would stand for this idea... well I'm...

    Flight School backed up

I have no clue but my Navy friends say it's dead. But Navy trains other countries too, right? I'm curious to know how that will be affected. "Open a lot of doors": do you mean the ability to select a non-carrier trainer?

Sounds like the T-45 community is hard broke, and not getting better anytime soon. Wow.

Wondering what free time during primary looks like

This. Fester speaks with wisdom. You will need to decide how much personal risk you want to accept, against your goal of becoming a Naval Aviator. Anecdotally, you are a more valuable commodity to the Service after you have wings on your chest.

    T-45 Engine Issues

Did I miss a post on this? Big deal, or just the standard couple of days to look it over? The USAF T-38 fleet is getting long in the tooth. The oldest A-models we have at Beale are 59 years old, and have 20,000+ hours. That's a lot of 1.1 sorties...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

The Air National Guard has three SAR Wings: Long Island, Moffett Field, and Anchorage. I believe all three fly the HC-130 and the HH-60G. With their A2A refueling capability, they can effect rescues as far as ~1,000 nm offshore.

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Because we have too many pilots for the next bid period. Simple as that. Will this continue? Many say it will. My hope is that very few take the zero lines or LOA/COLA's. It might drive the company to offer paid leaves in June and beyond, much like they did during the Wu-Flu. COLA's...

The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

BWAAA! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! (BTW, it's a cockpit... or "flight deck". The cabin is where the pax sit. But if I'm the "single pilot in the cabin", I'm probably on a deadhead, and you can spot me with a whiskey on my tray table. In that case, I think "single pilot" is viable.)

    FNAEB outcomes

Is going back through T-44's really something the Navy does in a case like this?
  25. HuggyU2

    FNAEB outcomes

It is not at all uncommon in the USAF for a new pilot that washes out of the fighter track to move to a crew aircraft... and be successful. I know several. Generally, if they tracked to a single-pilot aircraft, they did pretty well in pilot training and have more than adequate skill sets to...

    U-2 Retirement

Nose art is often done on the U-2. Because it cannot be painted, the crew chiefs have done some incredible work over the years using chalk. I've seen dozens of pieces of art done on the nose. Some really funny, some very poignant. Here's one that was done as a tribute to the 3 Army people...

    U-2 Retirement

This has nothing to do with the U-2 retirement... But since it involves the U-2 and a Navy guy, I'm posting it here to avoid another thread. Gary "Elvis" Costello is a Navy P-3 pilot who came to the U-2. Now at American. In the dark shirt. Keith "Mountain" Broecker is a former U-2 pilot...

    U-2 Retirement

Pretty much, yes. The early A-models flying out of Groom Lake were metal finish. Plus, we really need that 2-seater now, not in a few months.
  30. HuggyU2

    U-2 Retirement

Probably none. The jet was stripped down and it was significantly more than a "bondo" repair.
  31. HuggyU2

    U-2 Retirement

That was the first flight of that jet in 3 years. It was repaired after a landing mishap. The photo is of the first maintenance flight. We want to keep it silver... but MX pushed back for corrosion reasons. Apparently it will get painted.

    CMV-22B Osprey Rollout

Almost 69. The first 55 jets were built in 1955-1957. First flight 1 Aug 55. Those jets are all retired or crashed. There are 30ish jets flown now. Four built in '68, and the rest in the 1980s.

Is There Precedent for Beginning Fighter Pilots of Late Age?

PJ was "the old man" in our pilot training class and was my table-mate. Showed up at his fighter squadron at about 29-30 years old. Got the Air Force Cross in Desert Storm for his efforts in saving Devon Jones who was shot down in his F-14. I'd say he did ok...

    NEWS Seahawks Sink Houthi Boats

A good friend of mine got a Silver Star for an air-to-air kill, but that's probably the exception, not the rule. Rico Rodriguez had three A2A kills, but the highest he got was a DFC. I recall that MOB Tremel got a DFC for his Super Hornet kill.

    Maintenance at a civil airport?

Ah. Makes sense. My understanding is that on larger USAF aircraft, like the C-17, KC-135, etc... they often travel with flying crew chiefs that are part of the crew AND do various amounts of maintenance. Especially if they are, for example, an Osprey or C-5 crew in Africa. So yes... I stand...
