Next step Skynet....Manned vs Unmanned Aviation

I dunno about Air Force culture and deployment cycles, but I couldn't imagine their pilots would be too happy with giving up flight time to some dude in a shack in Nevada.

    But I sniveled!!!

That has got to be the best promotion story I've ever heard. Rep for that!
  3. insanebikerboy

    But I sniveled!!!

Yeah, I agree with that, especially outside of a TRACOM, hell, at NPS nobody cared about rank, even Marines. Still, that shouldn't take away from someone being proud of a promotion and a command taking the time to recognize it. Maybe not chokers and large medals recognition, but something...

    Diver

Pretty physically demanding from what I understand. I don't think it's a tough academic school, but the dive guys beat the crap out of you daily for the 8 or 12 weeks (or however long it is).
  5. insanebikerboy

    But I sniveled!!!

I personally think that's a problem on the aviation side of the house. Yeah, it's automatic, but I have several SWO buddies whose command made it a big deal, ceremony and all. So what if it's just a matter of keeping your nose clean for two years, you still get another rank and more...

    masters degree

I had a few classes with a Harrier pilot out at NPS. He said that after NPS the Marines essentially stop looking at you as a pilot and instead as what your degree field was in. In his case, he was essentially going to be an analyst the rest of his career. At least, that was his...

    WSJ Journalist lands on Carrier...

Let me rephrase, mishap rates are attributed to 20-25% mechanical failure, 75-80% human error. Single component mechanical failure that would not jeopardize flight safety is probably much higher, but the number I gave was broadcast at our last safety AOM. Good point. Ah....the good memories of...

    WSJ Journalist lands on Carrier...

Yes, and that all makes perfect sense. But that highlights all of the danger working on the deck, but what about the act of flying the plane. Granted, the flight deck is aviation related, but it's not flying a plane. My dad and I were just talking about this, and he brought up a good point...

    WSJ Journalist lands on Carrier...

I've seen the swiss cheese model, and that kind of explains my point of view. You say pilots make dangerous errors, but procedures/systems/etc prevents the holes in the cheese from lining up. So, even if the pilot's action is "dangerous", is it truly dangerous if the systems/etc keep something...

    WSJ Journalist lands on Carrier...

Ah, but to continue beating the horse... Is it the Captain's (or any crewmembers') fault when a 50 foot wave washes over the deck and sweeps a man overboard in the course of hauling in crab? There is no mistake being committed by anyone on board, yet someone can get killed. In my point of...

    WSJ Journalist lands on Carrier...

I'd argue that BASE jumping is quite safe done properly. Not the way I interpreted it. We may be splitting hairs on this, but my take is hey, I can ride in a helicopter all day long and be safe and sound. The mere act of riding in a helo isn't unsafe. Make a mistake (leave that nut in the FWU)...

    WSJ Journalist lands on Carrier...

That's what I've always been told, it's not that it's dangerous per-se, just unforgiving of mistakes. Best example I can give is with reductions gears from the main turbine on a boat. Granted, it'd be almost impossible for a wrench to get left in there, but say one did, the reductions gears...

Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

It's called smooth talking one of the female pr's. :D Seriously, I just asked and she was like, sure, here you go, although that was after I talked to her for about 20 minutes. I was always told, make nice with the pr's and they'll give you cool toys.

Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

Well, in 8 guys have to share helmets, for the fellas that don't have a helmet they have to go to NATOPS and get a skull cap so they share the helmets. Me, I'm just glad I have a head the size of a beachball so I have my own "special" helmet. Any other suggeestions for flight gear that can be...

    All things MV-22 Osprey

Zeta liners and other helmet goodies

I managed to finagle (helps to get to know the pr's!) a zeta liner from the pr's over in HT land last night and man is it the difference in night and day! So, my question is, what other stuff can you do to a helmet (or flight gear in general) to up the comfort level? I've heard of the...

    Life with a Marine Officer?

I'll agree. My wife has been a teacher for four years and the biggest issue is getting applications in on time (to be competitive), actually finding out when the school districts are hiring, and finding a position she wants. Being a elementary school teacher helps because she can teach anything...

Yeah, Tacair isn't "tailhook", but what I hear is secondhand since I'm not in primary anymore. And yeah, TIMS has become self-aware and only allows what it wants to happen.

Here's a decent workout program that helps kids get ready for Plebe Summer at the Academy. It won't make you a rockstar but it'll help get you into a decent amount of shape. Scoober got Robbed. Be aware and on the lookout for his stuff. NASCC/Padre Island

To piggyback on shwarti's post, everyone should check their laptops to see if it has a built in tracking function. The catch is that you have to turn it on, because it usually is disabled from the factory. Just go into your laptop's bios/setup screen on startup and look for it in there. My...

Good excuse to not run distance

If you're training for the PFT, you might consider doing longer distance, higher intensity sprints than a 150. I.e., run 400's or even 800's as the interval sprints instead of a 150. The 150's will help though, so you don't necessarily have to stop those. I'm gonna go out on a limb here...

    TH-57B Limits

Yeah, although I was trying to be a smart ass, the light will illuminate when the generator stops working well enough to stay online. While it could be a total failure or just a partial, once the voltage gets low enough the reverse current relay cuts the generator out of the loop. Generator...

BMW 6 series on Ebay w/ salvage title

Can you do your own maintenance? And by maintenance, I mean do you know what an alternator is or how to solder, just to name a few? I ask that because water damage can be insidious in how it can cause problems. More than likely you'll get a great deal, but don't kid yourself about possible...

    What to fly... Advice?

For me, one of the biggest reasons I wanted jets was because I personally like flying as the sole person in the cockpit. Plus, I wanted to be the one signing for the plane every time I walked out to fly. Just my thing. Of course it would happen I'm in helo's now. My recommendation, think...

    Moving to Pensacola...

Check out www.pensacolamls.com. You can search by area, price, etc. As for buying, take a good look at homeowner's insurance for this area. Florida has had a recent, sharp rise in rates due to hurricanes. Hurricanes and insurance rates was the reason my wife and I didn't buy. If you do...

    Is a motorcylce worth it?

I've heard of this actually happening once. An apartment complex wouldn't let loud pipes, and they used some obscure law for it. That was in Virginia, so I don't remember the details. However, in Florida, apparently there's a law that motorcycle pipes aren't allowed to be over a certain decibel...

Do you get to keep SLRP going E to O?

I dunno about the SLRP stuff, but for your enlistment bonus, you'll get it if you finish the requirements in your contract. I.e., as a nuke if you take the enlistment bonus option, you would get that after you finish prototype. If you do finish it, you'll get the bonus, and you don't have to pay...

    Is a motorcylce worth it?

When it's all said and done, I save anywhere from $100 and $160 a month driving my motorcycle (2000 Victory V92SC versus a 1980 Jeep). Two things to think about, you've already highlighted one. Riding in weather, and carrying crap. Weather - for me, I'll ride in anything except ice, so if you...

Man v Wild. I hate that show too. The advice he gives is gonna get someone killed someday. My best example; Bear is in the Colorado Rockies, it's like 40 degrees outside. He decided to hop into a freezing ass river for no other reason than to help him get downstream "faster", he was tired of...

    Practical shooting question

^^^^^ Agree totally. Unless the OP is planning on shooting in Cup matches or anything like that, using the low tech $1.00 a roll masking tape will do the exact same as the super expensive glasses from Hammerli.
