    CAPT Scott Speicher - KIA

It didn't used to be; it used to be a dollar amount, but some aircraft could be a total loss and not meet that criteria, so they changed it to also apply to total loss of an aircraft.

    Saving (or using) Leave

You can still have more than thirty days, but at the end of September you lose anything over thirty, right? Over years 2-11, I gradually built up a balance of close to thirty days, then would take thirty days each year so that the balance was 30 at the end of September. (Lost maybe 5 or 6...

    Whats your take?

The military puts a lot more money into people who go the ROTC or Academy routes, so it would make sense that they would be more selective. However, officers are definitely judged on their performance, not on the origin of their commission.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

LOL - definitely!! I lived across the street from the Spindrifter (in the Kon-Tiki apartments!!!) while going through the HS FRS in 1982; then moved closer to Doctor's Lake, but still came back for those Thursday nights.

    Longest Flight?

Thanks, A4s! But I'm sure you never had to use 142.
  9. E

    Longest Flight?

Do squadrons still have "Falcon code" cards?
  10. E

    First Female F-22 Pilot

    Yeah, or Fred Noonan.
  11. E

    Longest Flight?

Of course, there are always the discussions about porn movies that are done on "ICS".
  12. E

    Longest Flight?

8.2 hours (I think it was). In an H-3, though, so you could get up and stretch, and there was also a relief tube. However, it was wearing a wet suit. (Which meant that 8.2 hours worth of farts were released in the ready room all at once during the debrief.)

    First Female F-22 Pilot

Don't you mean "females pissing on atolls"?
  14. E

    First Female F-22 Pilot

Hey, don't exaggerate! He didn't have a bleeding head wound for the entire flight!
  15. E

    Smallest helo ever . . .

No tail rotor, so it would be an easy transition for the 46 pilots if they cancel the Osprey program.

I read the info on the Arlington web site on your roomie. How sad!

    Arlington Nat'l Cemetary

Thanks; been there a number of times as a visitor, and once to observe the burial of the remains of a Vietnam War MIA I had escorted there. Never tire of it. The Robert E Lee mansion is worth a visit for those who have enough time.

Yeah, like putting limitations on everybody.
  21. E

    liberty limits

This has been going on for a long time. It is frustrating, but remember that Navy ships overseas represent the nation as a whole, and a bad port call by a ship is a signficant black eye for the entire ship/fleet/Navy/possibly higher. And after the problem has happened, "hammering" those few...

Medal of Honor criteria and award inflation

The "instinct for self-preservation" is often overridden by other instincts, such as the instint to protect one's loved ones/offspring. You see that in nature very frequently. This discussion is about people who have been "raised" with the attitude of living with under harsh conditions/fighting...
  23. E

Medal of Honor criteria and award inflation

The "instinctual" actions would be of the "jumping on a grenade" type, not the type you described.

    My Grandfather's Memiors from WWII

Thanks for sharing that. One of my uncles (1st LT, CO of a heavy weapons platoon) was killed in Normandy, and is buried in the cemetery there. You can get the unit records of military units at the National Archives in DC (things like daily rosters, casualty reports, action reports, etc.) You...

Medal of Honor criteria and award inflation

But that would be relative to the individual. So sensitive people would get a disproportionate amount of awards.
  26. E

    Happy New Year!!!

    Is that place still open?
  27. E

Medal of Honor criteria and award inflation

I would agree that 1 and 2 are similar; I would not call either of them "instinctual." "Bravery is bravery" Well, the people who set up and approve the awards don't agree with that.
  28. E

Mishap rates and what affects them (thread split)

FWIW (retired for 12 years now, strictly H-3s after getting my wings), I would occasionally find myself on auto-pilot on pre-flights and in the brief. Whenever that happened, I would go back to the last point where I knew I was OK, and start again. To minimize the chance of that happening, I...

    NROTC Scholarship

Went through something similar with my son. He did not get accepted at his first choice, got accepted at his second choice, but the unit was full. He went on waiting list for the scholarship - they said that there was a reasonable chance he would get in, but they would not tell us where he was...

    All things MV-22 Osprey

That almost sounds like you are saying that it is too capable.
  31. E

Should new adminstration do away with MV-22 and EFV?

Very short-term view. These are not "new" programs, so blaming this White House is inaccurate. The biggest problem with the procurement system is too much political involvement. Whose district/state an "item" is produced in plays as big a role, and often a bigger role, than what the best...
  32. E

    All things MV-22 Osprey

There are two separate issues here; one is whether it ever should have been bought (could go either way on that) and the other is whether it should be canceled now (seems like it would be best not to, although could definitely make a strong argument to cancel it.)
  33. E

Medal of Honor criteria and award inflation

Looking at it from a different perspective, I suspect that a more deliberate action (such as what medics often do) requires more bravery than an instinctive action which (obviously only guessing here) such as diving on a grenade.

55% chance U.S. disintegrates, sez Russian academic

He's a really good writer, if you haven't read him in the past, I strongly recommend you check his website www.ejectejecteject.com and read his previous columns. (I don't know if the one referenced by busdriver is there.)

What were those FOD movies they used to show in P-Cola? "Dr. FOD", or something similar?
  37. E

That was called "Trial by Fire."

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

"Easy ... just take a peek out under the bag. What's that saying?? "ONE PEEK IS WORTH A THOUSAND SCANS ... ???" " I found out by accident that the same logic applies to wearing black-out goggles with a scratch in the "black out" when you are going through the helo dunker.

I'm absolutely sure that somehow, somewhere, it's related to paying for a golf course at an Air Force base.

    He said, tongue in cheek.
  43. E

    Life after the military

Depends on how much active duty time is available with your squadron, and how many pilots are competing for it. The competition to get a reserve billet can be pretty intense, depending on the geographic region, the economy, and what is happening with manning levels in the Navy.
  44. E

    Life after the military

Having spent half my career as a TAR, I would put the pilots of a reserve squadron ahead of the pilots of an active duty squadron any time, at least from the perspective of flying ability. Some other professions that were represented by reservists I've known: Salesman Auto parts store owner...

    Life after the military

This info is about 12 years old: Pretty diffcult for helo pilots to get on with airlines unless they were able to pick up some fixed-wing time somewhere (i.e. C-12 pilot while on a staff job). There are a lot of options for helo pilots: "life flight", law enforcement (police/highway...
  47. E

    Service Selection

The issue is not how many aviators there are in each class, the issue is the percentage of cadets/midshipmen who want to fly, and can't due to the number of available spots.
