Go for the minor? Or graduate 5 months sooner?

It won't make a difference in your Navy career as far as fleet tours, but it (and grades) will potentially make a difference in getting selected for one of the Navy grad school programs, if that potentially interests you. You should also consider the benefit for "after the Navy", although your...

    dec grads/selects

How long after finding out you got aviation do you get the specific class date? Curious, as my son will be graduating this spring.

Legal Age to Consume Alcohol and USNA Stories

LOL! Could they seat the entire brigade at once, or did they have to stagger the meal times? Changing the time on the clock up on the outside top of Dahlgren was an occasional late Saturday night activity.

15 year old, Wanting to become a US Navy pilot.

Math and science, and extra-curricular activities, incl. sports. Leadership positions, if possible. You can get info from ROTC/the Academies on the breakdown of each year - how many played varsity sports, the percentages that fell into various GPA and SAT/ACT ranges, etc.

Legal Age to Consume Alcohol and USNA Stories

Absolutely - just two (?) blocks from the Chapel gate. It closed down in 1979 or thereabouts. It was good pizza.

Legal Age to Consume Alcohol and USNA Stories

Disco Dahlgren! One Saturday night an inebriated mid was in the head pouring a pitcher of beer into one of the urinals, with the explanation that he was "cutting out the middle man."

Letter of Introduction to new command still required?

LOL! I don't think I used a single one of my Ensign cards (from USNA); thank goodness that, for a small additional price, they included the metal printing plate so that it would be cheaper to get the new ones each time I got promoted.

Letter of Introduction to new command still required?

Assuming that you have leave enroute, I would say at a minimum to let them know when you are planning on checking in.

    Depth perception mega thread

I used to have problems with that test (the five circles), and generally had to "re-do" at least a couple of the lines. Then I found that if I looked "past" the circles, I was able to pick out the correct one all the time. Didn't have any problems with it the last several physicals I took.

Options for Aviators to serve in the field

Absolutely. At 0100 on a cold, rainy night, when maintenance is getting ready to swap out the alert bird, and you are deciding who is going to go pre-flight it.

    Thanks - I was with HS-9 from 82-85.

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

Yeah, never understood that decision; was stationed at NAS Jax in the early 80's, and Cecil seemed like an ideal location operationally.

Stupid questions and smart answers about jet fuel (JP-4, 5, 8, etc)

We could make adjustments on the H-3, too. But then they tended to hot start, because of the JP-5 in the lines. And if there was JP-4 in the lines, and the fuel control was set for JP-5, they would tend to hang up on starts. Thanks, USAF!!

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

It was a very lengthy process (about 9 years or so) to get the approval to be able to actually use the water buckets. (From when the first request to develop the capability until they were finally used fighting a fire.)

    Maryland EMS Helo Mishap (9-28-2008)

I beleive that all of the H-3s in my squadron had more than 10K when I retired; of course the youngest of them was about 30 years old.

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Thanks; I went through it almost thirty years ago, and was hoping they updated it significantly. Do the squadrons provide good post-SERE school periodic training? That was lacking in my day. (Personally interested, as my son will be getting commissioned this spring and heading for P-cola.)

Have there been significant changes in the SERE training/survival training based on experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

And there was the time I was sitting in the left seat on a flight from North Island to San Clemente. About 10 minutes after takeoff, I get the Coke out of my helmet bag. As I was starting to open it, it slipped out of my hand. Hit the landing gear handle, which caused the gear to go down, of...

Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

Is there any place else in the world where you find a group of people like the "ready room" in a USN/USMC squadron? Where else do you get the same collection/concoction of smart, rude, funny, sarcastic, crude, patriotic jackasses, any one of whom you would give your life for? Well, almost any...

Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

How totally pumped up with adrenaline you are when you pick up a "man overboard"! Probably the best feeling I have ever had. The incredible amount of respect you have for the rescue swimmers who do the hard work in those situations. And a shout out to the Coast Guard helo crews, who I think do...

Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

New to the squadron, having to fly with the CO or XO. You knew that you were going to get "grilled", so you were always nervous. Until you figured out that if YOU asked THEM systems/tactics questions you could keep them on topics you were stronger on. And when I found out that my CO was a big...

Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

Retired H-3 pilot: The people - how close you get to your three roommates in that J.O. stateroom on cruise. Making friends with the night shift in the galley just down the passageway from your room, so that you can come in at 3 AM and get fresh, hot cinnamon rolls. (And those Navy cinnamon rolls...
