"And if you're one of those "all I want to do in the military is be a pilot" guys: you should probably go to USAFA."
You might want to do some checking before basing your career on that; what I have heard (anecdotally, from a USNA classmate whose son is currently at USAFA) there are a fair...
A lot of other things you can do for the cardio on the non-running days. And for the running, recommend as much of it as possible being on softer surfaces (machines at the gym, running trails, tracks) rather than on streets.
Not as much total time, though. Interestingly (for me, at least, I know no one else cares and my kids are certainly tired of hearing about it!) I was in both of those squadrons. Final Countdown was about two years before I got there, and Apollo 13 was filmed while I was in the squadron. (Which...
Find out where they do the local prior-to-separation training; the people there will be able to answer all your questions. (They used to call it TAPS, I think.)
We carried some sea lions from North Island out to San Clemente Island once for an exercise they were going to take part in on one of the acoustic ranges. They stunk!! (But we did get cool ball caps out of it!)
One of the AW/rescue swimmers from a squadron I was in switched to EOD, and ended...
It is within your rights, but just be aware that your command might be contacted by the Congressman's office, so be prepared to discuss the issue with an irritated C.O.
No, I didn't take it that way. I'm a Christian also, I was trying to point out that faith in general, and that faith in particular, shouldn't (IMO) play a role one way or the other in this decision.
trkracer,
"I am a christian man,"
That isn't a factor at all, IMO. They face the same family issues as those who aren't Christians do. And there are plenty of opportunities for worship/fellowship when you are deployed, if that is your concern.
It's a personal choice, works for some people, not for others.
1) Your wife/significant other has to be behind you 100%.
2) The biggest issue I saw with friends was them missing big chunks of kids' childhoods while on deployment.
FWIW, I made the choice to switch to TAR (the active...
I have one - it's a lot of fun to shoot, although I don't get to very often. I use generic .30 cleaning tools on mine, so I would think that the M1 brush should be fine.
I did that once to med evac a sailor with a broken arm, when there was some type of electronics "van" on the helo deck. Not an especially comfortable feeling for the helo crew, either! (At least when you haven't done a vertrep to the forward station before.)
Fred,
"If one knows the pay prior to joining, and still chooses to join, I don’t understand bitching about it after getting in."
Invalid argument - nothing wrong with complaining about pre-existing conditions as long as the complaint is reasonable.
It's a budget issue; they will raise flight pay if they think they need to to keep people from getting out. Until then (from their perspective) there isn't a need for that.
I don't think the author's point is that technology is emphasized too much, but rather that he feels that technical "know-how" carry too much weight with the leadership. i.e. knowing how to use radar tactically is important, but in-depth knowledge of the technology of the system is not as important.
"What happens if you are in a tight spot while pulling pitch and things are not happening as you expect?"
If you are referring to the controls being reversed, that would have been there when first taking off/taxiing, so the answer would be "put the collective back down and figure out what is...
Depends on the helo, specifically whether or not there is the capability to have power to the control systems without having the rotor engaged. Skids vs wheels would also make a difference on when it could be detected.
I would think, though, that in any case it would "feel funny" as you are...
I disagree with the first point. It's a tossup between development of leadership-management skills and understanding the concepts of war-fighting as to where the emphasis should be for officers.
The second point is a very dangerous attitude to have, which has a tendency over the centuries to...
I think there should certainly be more emphasis on war-fighting then there was when I was there; but that's been awhile. The only real tactics instruction we had was in of second class summer. (Not counting the YP class.) What do they offer now?
I could see where co-gender classes would have...
I think that you would have a significant advantage in that it sounds like you have a higher level of ambidextrousness than most people.
But how good are you with your feet? That's the real question!!
I think that depends on your level of ambidextrousnous. (Or whatever the official term is.) Left-handed people with a low level of that have problems flying.
^ I think the problem is that people will be less likely to give opinions that are only marginally backed up by the findings (but still worth considering) if those are going to be made public.
And like it or not, in today's society the potential for lawsuits needs to be taken into...
I found that doing repetitions of going halfway up and holding the position for several seconds was just as good for the exercise, and much less likely to result in a strain.
Based on some of the comments on the 2 threads on the F-18 mishap, I thought it might be worthwhile having a thread discussing, generically, what happens after a mishap. I've been out for 12 years, so things may have changed, so I'll just start it off pretty basically.
There are going to be...
Suggestions:
You can get statistics that will refute his points, i.e. the education level of the officer corps vs the population at large, the crime level of the military vs the population at large, the public approval level for the military vs that of the Congress. It's probably not going to...
I have been in the IT field since retiring. My primary desire (mainly due to wife's health issues) was a "normal" work schedule, so I didn't really look into any piloting jobs. I got my Masters in Comp Sci at NPS while in the Navy, which made the transition easier. I definitely enjoy the job...
