    Relationships

Don't be so snooty. The point that a lot of these posts are trying to make is to wait, if you're not already married, until later. They are trying to help you avoid the "it'll end how you'd expect" part. What you should be saying is "If she's the one, then she'll be willing to wait a little bit...

Old French carrier to be scrapped

Fittingly, that reminds of when we were involved with a joint op with the French Navy; my roommate, who was suffering from "the runs" at the time, flew to the Clemenceau for a pax pickup. As soon as the gear was chocked, he jumped out, and frantically ran to the island, trying to get directions...

Navy Missile Cruiser Runs Aground Near Honolulu

I think part of the problem is that the COs are so afraid of something bad happening that there is a tendency to not give the rest of the wardroom the chance to grow. And someone from that wardroom is going to go on to become a CO.

Awesome response to a spouse upset over salutes

Every once in awhile you will find one with that type of attitude, but as a group, not too many of them are like that.

General Zinni gets dissed ... ???

"Also, they bureaucrats somehow hate those "outsiders", like Marine Generals, that come in from the outside and scoop up their birthright" Yes, and we wouldn't want to change the culture at the DOS, CIA, etc. by bringing in anyone from outside.
  7. E

Well, his last name is "Hill".

General Zinni gets dissed ... ???

Changing their mind about him being the ambassador is not a huge deal, but the way they did was very inept. Hopefully this trend doesn't continue.

Farewell Tribute to George W. Bush

You're missing the point. But I'll drop the discussion.
  11. E

Farewell Tribute to George W. Bush

Yes, and truth is truth, simple as that. Unfortunately, the media doesn't want to present a truthful picture. With CLinton, the media did not go out of their way to avoid noting his successes. They have with Bush. At this point "funny is funny" becomes part of the problem.
  12. E

Farewell Tribute to George W. Bush

Unfortunately, it's one part of the significant bias of the media. If the media would report the news accurately, then this would not matter. Since they don't, it just feeds into the misperceptions that much of the public has.
  13. E

Farewell Tribute to George W. Bush

He doesn't "need" to be PC. But in today's world, he is a notable part of the media, and should accept that responsibility. When all he does is "bash", he is part of the problem that comes when the media distorts the news by disproportionately showing one perspective.

    10% cut in military budget

Sounds like this is a misleading article; based on the below the proposed budget will be an increase from this year, but less than what DoD wanted. http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docID=news-000003022493
  15. E

Farewell Tribute to George W. Bush

A more appropriate way to handle would have been to also show clips from his good speeches, such as Ground Zero, Reagan's funerals, some of the video clips of him comforting survivors of military KIA. But this was more about them bashing the President.

You're Doing It Wrong (Civilian-Military Relations, that is)

Specifically, for starters, Obama's positions on Iraq. And no one tried to make the Middle East into a democratic nirvana. The last administration realized that something needed to change in that region, or there would be disastrous consequences.

    What High School Electives/USNA?

Your family isn't going to be serving with you; listen politely to what they say and then make your own decision.

You're Doing It Wrong (Civilian-Military Relations, that is)

^^^^^ Take a look at the promises and statements made, particularly in the area of foreign affairs.

You're Doing It Wrong (Civilian-Military Relations, that is)

During the capaign, either candidate Obama and staff were incredibly naive and ignorant, or extremely dishonest. (Much more so than what is typical, lest someone say "Everybody does that in campaigns.") I find myself hoping that it was the latter, which is a very sad state of affairs.

    10% cut in military budget

Unions were very necessary at one time, and performed a vital service. They have since grown too big for their britches, and are actually hurting more than helping. They need to step back and remember what their real mission is.

SERE school (Survival, Escape, Resistance, Evasion)

Well, I didn't like being strapped into a chair, blindfolded, dropped into a cold swimming pool, turned upside down, and forced to crawl out of an underwater maze while being kicked by three other people. Isn't that torture? SHouldn't the military stop making their personnel go through that in...

    What High School Electives/USNA?

    1) Find out what the requirements are for USNA, but as a general rule, the higher level the class, the better. If you have "extra" slots to fill (after planning for the requirements) you're probably better off taking technical courses. But don't take such a tough load that your grades suffer...

    What High School Electives/USNA?

"when I get out of high school" - you don't say how old you are, but you really need to get started on the process by your junior year to optimize your chances. Is your primary consideration going into the military, or going to one of the Academies? Start the process with both of the schools...

    Question about NROTC and USNA

I went to the Academy, but have also had the opportunity to observe my three children in college (including one in NROTC). The best part of the Academy is the friends you make; I think the friendships you make there are closer than those most people make in college. If the military has...

Battlin' the Burble (CVN/CGs, Fixed/Rotary wing)

That wasn't the case with the older CGs (Arkansas and California come to mind) - flight deck was all the way aft relatively far from the superstructure, so the wind wasn't as much of an issue. The Arkansas had great lunches, so somehow they always seemed to get the mail first.

Battlin' the Burble (CVN/CGs, Fixed/Rotary wing)

Have one of the small-deck H-60 pilots (note that that says small DECK) talk about flying in, through, with burbles! They get to hover in them for extended periods of time on occasion.

    Battle 360 series

I don't know how many episodes are in the series, but this was on the History Channel this past weekend, and I watched several of the episodes. It follows the USS Enterprise through WWII. Very well done and entertaining.

    Honors College

I think that you're always better off pushing yourself (within reason) than not. You don't mention what your major is going to be, asking the others here - I am guessing that is likely to have an impact on getting selected for nuclear power, and doing well in an honors program in a technical...

a below in head work for Obama

LOL! Nice try, but over the last ten years the media has gone much, much farther in the tank then they were before. But your post does point out that the fact Reagan and Bush won speaks to the strength of their ideas with the American people - in spite of the media bias, they still won. (What...

a below in head work for Obama

I would trust Palin's innate common sense and actual executive experience in Alaska over Biden's idiocy and 30 years experience in the Senate. And I strongly suspect that a significant number of the people who voted for Obama did so because they were given such a negatively biased view of...

    President Obama's Military

Whether the campaign rhetoric and promises were due to naivete or dishonesty, or some combination of those, reality is a bitch. And I strongly expect that Obama's policies will bear a lot of resemblances to those of his predecessor.

    150 million big ones...

Of course, the media was extremely critical of the cost of the second Bush inaugural, which was about half what this one will be. Just another example of how what was horrible when Pres Bush did it is now fine and dandy when Pres Obama does it.
  49. E

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery

If you look at some of the schemes that were being pushed then, I don't think there was a lot of "idea quality control" going on.
