Question about I.F.S. program before flight school

if you have a PPL, or have completed a XCountry solo you will be waived from IFS. you can always go to a local airport and pay the $60-80 for a "discovery" flight to get the feel back. I feel like its way more waste of an effort to yell at someone about the search function than just answer...

    nomex jacket reissue

I was issued an Xlarge Nomex flyers jacket in API. I had requested a large, but the lady decided to give me a XLarge just in case I gained 25lbs. The jacket fits ok and looks fine, but when I sit down the extra material (since its slightly too big) rides up behind my neck. Its not a big deal...

    PCS Thread

I'm living onbase at Vance in their dorms, and my HHG have not arrived yet. I don't want the hassle of moving in my couch. How does non-temporary storage work/get set-up?

    Gouge on PRB?

unless your an @$$bag they will give you a second shot. they will look at a lot of things other than EPs and stuff, including how you did on the FAA exam, your GPA in college etc. A good PMA will get you through it. Just make your second chance count. I started to think I was getting lost on...

    BOQ? naw

they ask are you a pilot or NFO. my two friends were NFOs and were kicked out after ten days, yes. When I said I was a pilot, she told me I could stay as long as I want.

NROTC options if I do not receive the scholarship

I can almost guarantee you that you will not be an Intel officer via the NROTC program. NROTC commissions Unrestricted Line officers and Intel is in the Restricted line. I don't believe there is any commissioning route via NROTC that will designate you as a Navy Diver...I could be wrong though...

  8. torpedo0126

    BOQ? naw

it depends also if you are a SNA or SNFO. SNFO they grant 10 days of BOQ time if you want. SNA they simply asked me if I wanted to stay in the BOQ or live off base. I stayed in the BOQ until I found a place... however, if you elect to do what I did, bear in mind, you won't be reimbursed for the...

Air Medals and the point system

Do Navy helo pilots often fly "combat" missions? I was under the impression they were more of the workhorses of the Navy?

    custom flight bag?

I know this was in a thread somewhere, but I couldn't find it very easily under search... I could have sworn there was a link posted for some place in Meridian or Kingsville (not exactly sure) that made custom flight bags? I'm not even sure if they are called flight bags, but they looked like...

Air Medals and the point system

sorry, i'm still really confused on what merits certain awards. i mean you can read the description of, say, the air medal, but those descriptions don't always define what "meritorious" means and the like. Since I've mostly seen people in flight suits, I only had the LTs from NROTC to draw on...

    Intro and Questions

yes and no. High scores ideally will have a better chance of getting want they want, but it depends on what is available. Also, I am pretty sure that a quality spread exists in the Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. You can't have the best students all go into one field and the worst go into...

    Intro and Questions

~50% of the Navy is composed of helicopters. The other 50% is a mix of F/A-18s, P-3s, C-2s, E-2s, E-6s. There are others (sorry don't mean to offend anyone, just serving a point) in that mix, but the point is that a significant % of the fleet is helicopters. You are definitely NOT the first...

    My Situation: Eyesight issue

I have a friend in the Marines who went to Canada to get LASIK because the FDA has not approved the Excimer laser for his level of astigmitism (the laser is capable of it, approval has just been slowed by red tape). Granted he wasn't a pilot, but his medical paperwork went through just fine and...

    on base housing at Vance

Both my friend and I who will be reporting to Vance next week got WORD from both staff and people there that there is virtually no off base housing available. Thats why they are doubling up on people in the "dorms." I know living off base would be preferable, but I have talked to several recent...

    Acute Sinusitis ?

Be careful when you get Claritin, because they also sell Claritin-D, which I believe DOES carry a decongestant. I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure thats the case.

    Naval Aviator -> Special Forces

it was brought up earlier in the thread that Harm (from JAG) jumped in between flying and the courtroom. This is partially true. He actually started as a SEAL, became a pilot, went JAG, then back to aviation, and then finally back to the courtroom.
  27. torpedo0126

    Naval Aviator -> Special Forces

I think you might be confused. If you intend to enlist, you will have to apply for one of the Marine Commissioning programs during/after boot camp. You may not get selected. If you have a degree, unless you really want to be an enlisted Marine first, you probably should just put in a package to...

Applying for NROTC 4-yr scholarship 2009

Nope, not with the Navy's new "tiered" system. They made it much harder to transfer majors once you've committed to engineering. I'm not sure how the new system works exactly, but once you've agreed to engineering, unless your switching disciplines, there is a chance you could lose your...

    SNFO to SNA

They are trying to transition NFOs to SNAs because NFOs are being phased out of the Marine Corps. The wait time to class up for API with NFO Marines is typically much longer (about 1-2 a month).
  33. torpedo0126

Nope he is not. I know the Dr. he is referring to. If you want some real entertainment, find out his name and listen to his voicemail.
  34. torpedo0126

    Bdcp - prk

this is kinda true. it depends on how bad your eyes are. if you review the waiver guide or use the SEARCH function, you will find the correct number. If you are less than a certain amount, you need only wait 3 months.
  35. torpedo0126

RW PPL - still bypass IFS?

If you have a PPL or have completed A XC solo, you are exempt from IFS. IFS is fun though, so if you aren't enjoy the free flying time.
  36. torpedo0126

    Flight Physical

i would definitely get one if I could. that way if there is something glaringly wrong you can either fix it, or get over it before Pensacola.
  37. torpedo0126

    Bdcp - prk

PRK will fix that easily your prescription, barring your astigmatism isn't out of limits for the laser. I'm fairly certain you can get PRK whil in BDCP... You will be paying for it, but you said from a financial standpoint, you would prefer to get in BDCP.
  38. torpedo0126

Less than -8.0 diopter pre-PRK, Any chances?

this is just a side story, but a friend of mine who is a Marine went to Canada to get Lasik because the FDA has not approved use of the Excimer laser to correct the degree of astygmatism he had. surgery went well and is now at TBS.
  39. torpedo0126

    Flight Physical

right there with you. I found out that I am EXTREMELY sensitive to sodium intake. Raises my BP to 140 systolic if I have more than 2000mg. About 3 weeks before physicals I go all out with veggies and fruits. NAMI will definitely hit people with random things. Know one person who was NPQed for...
  40. torpedo0126

Less than -8.0 diopter pre-PRK, Any chances?

this will probably piss you off, but the excimer laser has the ability to correct beyond -8.75 it just has not been approved by the FDA (at least thats what my doc told me). Are you disqualified as a Marine NFO? Marine NFOs are going away so I don't know where you are in your pipeline

    best electric shaver

No, I grow a "normal" amount of hair, but my beard is very coarse. After about 3 shaves with the same blade a 4 o'clock shadow will turn into a 11am shadow because it just isn't cutting down to the skin. I think I am going to risk getting a Panasonic and hoping it works. Has anyone seen this...

    best electric shaver

I will never give up the beloved Mach 3, but its getting to expensive to shave with it everyday. I've never had any luck with electric shavers (Norelco rotary just don't give me a close shave) until I tried my friends Panasonic foil one last year. Any recommendations? I'm specifically looking...

    LASIK or PRK?

its something like 98% of the healing occurs within the first 1-2 weeks after PRK. The last 2% comes in over 3-8 months. For me that was just things focusing at great distances. I was seeing 20/20 the next day. After 8 months my eyes have settled to 20/10 in each eye. Don't worry about...

    PRK after USMC Commissioning

doesn't it depend on how bad your eyes were? mine were only -1.25 and -1.5 and I was eligble for the waiver after 3 months. I would pull it up, except the NAMI website is not cooperating.
