    LASIK or PRK?

a lot of people for some reason are under the impression that LASIK is somehow better than PRK. They use the exact same laser (at least what was used on me) except that LASIK often will use the Intralase laser as well to make the flap in your eye. You will get the same if not better results...

Going back to school for another Bachelor's degree and wanting to do NROTC

i could be wrong, but I am pretty sure the TPS website says that an engineering degree is NOT required as long as you supplement it with correspondence/local college courses. I also just met a LT 2 weeks ago who was accepted with just engineering physics and calculus.

Army pilot seeking Marine cockpit opportunity

JAC, just in case you wanted a source. 2nd FAQ down: https://ifsqa.cnet.navy.mil/ifs/faces/anonymous/faq.jspx There was one guy in my IFS class who raised his hand when they asked does anyone have any flight time. He said yes, they said is it documented, and he showed them his logbook. Threw...

    Questions about Naval career path.

just a tidbit too about "lateral transfers." Say this works out and you get SWO, be careful about the thinking "oh I will just lateral transfer." At that point you have been designated and it will be someone elses decision. If you don't get the lat transfer approved, you will still be a SWO...

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

Are there significant differences? Just out of curiosity. I'm headed to Vance and I was told my helmet might get swapped for an AF one. Just was interested in the difference. Thanks.

To crossrate to AW or apply for flight school, that is the question!

4'11" i believe is too small. you can try a waiver but you are pretty short. besides not reaching the pedals, you might have a problem keeping good visibility over the instrument panel. lastly, if you do get in, your not going to get a flightsuit for about 10 years because supply isn't going...

    Active Duty Commitment

For the Navy it used to be a "progressive" service scale like that. Now it is 8 years after winging for all aviators, and 6 years for NFOs. It looks like the Marine issue has been resolved.
  11. torpedo0126

Army pilot seeking Marine cockpit opportunity

I believe its a PPL or a cross country solo. IFS culminates into the XC solo, so if you have documentation of completing that you should be waived from IFS.

    Lateral Transfer, Undesignated Ensign, USN

Well one thing I noticed from your original post that no one has addressed really is that your an NFO. You might not feel comfortable at the controls, but after IFS, you will have a competent, well-trained IP and eventually pilot at the controls. Obviously you will be part of the team, but you...

    Getting Re-measured

i was studying in the museum library last week and there was SNA there from Corpus who was studying with a friend. we started talking and I found out he was sent back here to get remeasured for jets. Don't know his whole story, but it looks like it might be possible if you can talk to the right...

    Quick ASTB question

Your GPA is not impressive, especially in public relations. Your friend was an aeronautical engineer, which I believe, plays a very big role in the selection. In NROTC, engineers and certain science majors get a GPA buffer because of the challenging nature of their major. If OCS selection is...

    Boeing announces "Silent Eagle"

The thing is you have to decided what the best tools are to maintain national security. I agree with Gates AND Rumsfeld that a lot of the weapons programs aren't needed for the national security the US is looking for. A lot of it has to do with the jobs they bring.

    Physics grade??

Thats fine but its certainly not a waste of time or effort. Did you talk to your LT yet? Sta21, you should commission just fine with a D as long as it is considered passing by your school--per the ROD.

Dept of the Navy AND Marine Corps?

i suspect this will get killed because of the administrative costs associated with having to change everything, logos, paper, etc. the only thing i will upset about is I can't say the Marine Corps is the best service in the Department of the Navy!

  23. torpedo0126

    oorah or hooyah?

Ok this is kind of embarassing, but for the last 5 years I was always under the impression that the Navy used oorah for its "battle cry" (obviously not in daily conversation like Marines). I've heard Navy personnel say it numerous times, including O-6s. I was studying with one of my Marine...

    Physics grade??

Well I would ask the LT what the reasoning is first. post what he says and we will go from there. The Skipper maybe had something to say about that since people were just taking it to get Ds. The Skipper has a fair amount of latitude in decisions in that stuff as well (don't know how it applies...

    Physics grade??

For a MIDN its jsut passing. So if a D is passing it is acceptable. Look up the ROD (regulations for officer devlopment). i had Moblie. it was fine. The ground school instructor sucks and wastes your time. A few of the FAA examiners can be picky, but they won't give you 4s for it. they just let you know its not the best could be done. only real bad part was the drive when i couldn't get a van.

1 Point Waiver for Air Dilemma

No there is little math needed in API. There are computations but they are straight forward and you use a flight calculator. However, I don't think math will give you trouble at API, the study habits will. No offense, but your scores did not change at all after the second test, which to me...

How to impress a Marine recruiter?

this is precisely the discussion nocal and I were having. every where you go in the Navy and Marine Corps, you will constantly be filling out Medical history forms. the are numerous problems with lying about your medical past, even down to criminal charges (lying on a Federal form). If the OSO...

    best route for my situation??

I assisted the Recruiting Officer when I was stashed at NROTC. If you explore the 2 year deal, do it with diligence, but place more emphasis on your other options. Two year scholarships are fairly rare and geared more toward people with very strong resumes as very few are given out every year...

    airsickness drugs at primary

How to impress a Marine recruiter?

If the medical history form asks about it I would be weary about hiding it. The consequences of them finding out and having lied on a federal form are much worse. Were you just counseled about depression or were you treated with medication?
  47. torpedo0126

How to impress a Marine recruiter?

Well I'm not exactly sure how the Marine Corps works, but I am fairly sure you don't want to be speaking to a recruiter but to the nearest OSO. Also, while it is important to appear professional, the I don't believe the recruiters will be the ones determining if you get selected or not. That...
