You're right about the helmets. In our squadron, they're pretty much all the same, white with the squadron logo on the back. However, some have funny additions, like a pair of small banannas on the ear part because he's a "monkey man" and one guy with the callsign Bam Bam has the flinstones...

    BDCP v. Regular Accession

Good point. When you apply BDCP, you're securing a slot in a future fiscal year, so there are probably more slots open. If you're applying straight up OCS "I can leave immediately" the slots are more limited for the current fiscal year vs. one or two years down the road.

    My chances at Subs

As long as it shows up on your transcript, you're good to go. Also, like I mentioned before, you select either sub or surface nuke before you go to OCS, so you will know what platform you're going for. It sounds like your grades are good, you can max out the NUPOC program at 36 months and...

You should be able to get away with that I guess, after all, Poopie Christmas is the middle of indoc week, and they should give you your plain white socks.

    No Luck...

Ben is right. The gold toe isn't a problem when you're wearing shoes, but poopie week, you'll spend some time with no shoes and just socks. Plain white is the way to go, as for stripes, c'mon, this isn't the 80s.

What do we wear at OCS

In all seriousness, if you're checking in during hot weather, wear your sneakers, and a T-shirt and shorts will work. One of our guys showed up with sandals...not the best move.

    Tons Of Questions

The website says if you're designated, you can have really crappy vision (no limit), but to apply, you need to have diopters not greater than +/- 8.00 (which is really bad). Also, that 20/40 requirement for pilots is for applicants, once you're in flight school, if your vision deteriorates...

    My chances at Subs

First of all, you choose sub/surface before you go to OCS, and most people want surface, so if you want subs, you'll probably get it. NUPOC won't let you get your masters before commissioning, but it has other attractive options. When you're done with your initial tour, you can do shore duty...

    Pre-OCS Shopping List?

Indoc week is held in a squad bay. That place will smell like complete ass by the time you leave. USMC-USN, glad to see you trying to get a jump on things, but you will be issued everything you need for 4th week RLP. I would bring some of your own white towels, so you can use the ones you're...

JayManC, Go to www.spencershih.com/OCS.html In the first and second picture, those are the shorts I'm talking about. Looking at them now, they seem darker than I remember, so maybe they changed the color. If those are the shorts you've seen, then go ahead and buy some extras.

Looks like you got the gist. Yeah, POV it...not only because of liberty, but when 4th and 9th week RLP rolls around, you'll want that space to stash all your extra crap. Plus, if you have the POV, you call the shots...want to go to wal-mart to buy a ton of candy? Good to go. Oh yeah, if you...

To piggyback on what patmack18 said, I only brought a gym bag with the essentials and the civvies on my back. When we were candio's, people were showing up with luggage you would bring to an airport. Not a good idea. One guy showed up with his stuff in a plastic bag, so we gave him crap for...

    Pre-OCS Shopping List?

One set of medals/ribbons should suffice. Also, you'll need your mini-medals. I would buy a good pair of running shoes, try to find out if your feet are low, normal, or high arched. Being a marine, you probably already know that. Otherwise, buy some good white undershirts where the neck...

    Duty Station...OCS CEC Candidate

Ordinary Guy, It's going all right, I've talked to my DH, XO, CO, and they're all on board, and I'm trying to sked an interview with the Acessions O. The reason it looks like I've been applying for awhile is because the board only meets twice a year. I'm getting pretty stoked as I prepare...

They don't get beat up THAT bad, but you are gonna sweat in them alot, and my paint was chipping at the end. It sounds like you have nice frames, so I'd use some BDCP money to either get a crappy pair, or you can act like you're really cool and get a pair of prescription Oakleys.

MikesPea, I've heard both too. I got verbal orders after 9th week, with the orders being cut 11th or 12th week. AMDO school only classes up 4 times a year, so they try to put people into OCS classes that will graduate, and then go to AMDO school within a 2 month period or so (I was...

    Anyone accepted for Intel lately?

The boards usually convene around 1100, where they break out the cards and play a few rounds of Texas Hold'em and drink a couple of beers, then they order pizza, watch movies and hang out until 1430 where they then review applicants until 1445 and head home. Repeat.

Do People in the fleet wear shirt stays?

It seems like the big complaint is that shirt stays rip your hairs out. Sounds like you're using the "stirrup" style shirt stays. I posted this elsewhere, but what works really well for me, is the white elastic ones that clip on to your socks. I'm not talking about the crappy ones at the NEX...

    Blue Angels = HUGE EGO

zuggerat, my point was, to the S-3 guys, those questions probably aren't redundant, because less people talk to them because the Blue Angels are the main attraction. As for the two blue angel guys being crappy guys, well, there are a couple of crappy guys in my S-3 squadron. Basically, that's...

    Blue Angels = HUGE EGO

That's a good point. Could be why the S-3 guys were eager to answer your questions and talk about the Navy in general. Let's face it, most people don't dream of being an S-3 pilot.

candio = Candidate Officer, last 2 weeks of OCS By risk I don't mean physical risks to you, I mean getting in trouble. Contacts aren't authorized in a boot camp environment. Some people in my class wore them after dinner around the spaces, but really, what's the point of that?

    contact lenses

You'll be able to wear your contacts when you're on liberty or when you're candio. I don't know if the risk/reward is worth wearing them during other parts of training.

What's up with the lack of profile info by users on the forum?

Hey zab, do you wear those stirrup shirtstays? Those hurt, you should see if you can get some Marine Officer shirt stays, they come in a yellow box and they hook on to your socks. They're also way better than those crappy ones at the NEX that always pop off. They're made by "Officers'...

    Headed to Dine-Out June 4th?

I'm not terriblly sure either, it's some sort of alcoholic concoction, I think based on tradition there's supposed to be all sorts of crap in there, but they've basically cleaned it up. I didn't have any, so if anyone else wants to chime in, I'd like to know if that stuff is as nasty as it sounds.

What's up with the lack of profile info by users on the forum?

John, I think alot of people on this site who are pre-OCS have wisely left their info blank. Other than that, it's probably pure apathy. I too like to know about posters when I read a good or bad post. Also, I can proudly say I'm on a distinguished road. (that's referring to my reputation)...

    Pushup form in OCS

Look, if you think you're going to be a hero by doing pushups on your knuckles, forget about it. That will just land you a ton of punishment from the DIs because you're different and you're wrong. Palms to the ground, fingers together, and facing forward.

    USMC F/A-18 from USAFA?

If you have a hard on to go to any service academy, then take it. If you're goal is to be a marine, consider other sources (ROTC/PLC/OCC), because the end result is more important than how you got there. P.S. The fun meter rules

    2 silver dollars for commissioning??

Navy OCS is two because like Patmack18 said, you get your salutes at the same time from the class chief and DI. This is in the USMC forum though, so I'm not sure why you would need two silver dollars. As far as the academy goes, they don't have a formal ceremony like Navy OCS does. Though...

Fair enough. I'll finish with this. Don't try to overload yourself with gouge beforehand. One, it ruins the experience, and two, OCS is constantly changing, so if you think you have the lowdown, they can throw you for a serious loop. You're better off not knowing anything, than knowing...

Take a look at your sneakers. I just did. All of them were laced the same way by the guy at the store, meaning that one shoe was outboard over inboard, but the other one was inboard over outboard. And all of them used the loop at the bottom, which they don't use at OCS. It would be a huge...

    Duty Station...OCS CEC Candidate

No, but you should have your orders by the time you're candio, and usually people going for the same designators will find out around the same time. Keep in mind, only a few communities cut Ultimate Duty Station orders out of OCS.
