    SATs

Registering sucks, because it's so far in advance. I remember when was in High School, I registered for the March exam, and before I even got my scores back, the registration for the May exam was approaching, so I just registered again. Remember, just because you register, doesn't mean you...

    SATs

Get one of those books from Princeton Review or some other company at your local bookstore. Take the practice tests so you're familiar with the format, and do it in simulated conditions, i.e. do all 3 hours at once. The SATs are a pain in the ass because you piss away a Saturday morning, but...

How to avoid boredom while running on a treadmill

You know what's really fun? Running on a treadmill in the bowels of a carrier while that sumbeetch is moving like crazy, and then having the ship's XO dog you about using a towel. That's fun. But seriously, using an MP3 player with tunes that'll get you pumped make it go by so much faster...

    Needs Advise!

Jessica, I was not prior enlisted, but the way it sounds like it, STA-21 is probably the best option (though very competitive). Why? Well, for starters, your education will be paid for, you get orders to college, and you keep your rank and are considered active duty. The downside is that...

    Lateral Transfer Package

steve, I originally planned on applying in June, and have been in touch with the Accessions Officer. He told me that the CEC wasn't going to participate in this upcoming lat transfer board, and I believe it, because I checked out the results to the November 2003 board and they didn't pick...

    Running Shoes

stevew, definitely go to a running shoe store. They'll have you walk with your shoes off to determine what kind of feet you have, if you underpronate, overpronate etc. A simple "wet foot" test does wonders too to see if you have a high arch, flat foot, or are normal. I had pains in the...

    Lateral Transfer Package

Thanks. How can I go about seeing if they have an official photograph? I'm not applying until the November board, so I've got time.

Flying for Navy, Marines or Air Force?

Gringo, Let's put it this way. In the Navy, most of the aviators launch and recover on a carrier about the size of 3 football fields that can pitch like crazy and is tough to see at night. In the Air Force, you've got nice airfields to land on.

    physical

My Skipper said there's a Flight Surgeon out there who likes to screw with people by saying "it's not that bad" while he puts his left hand on your left shoulder, then he puts a prosthetic hand on your right shoulder, and quickly delivers the exam. Watch out for that guy.

    Lateral Transfer Package

I'm wondering if anyone out there has successfully laterally transferred. I have all the instructions and what not, but I was wondering if anybody had any tips for the paperwork, talking to the skipper, etc. Any insight will be rewarded with cash. Ok, that last part is false, but insight will...

Just enlisted, going in as E-3, I want gold wings

I'm gonna agree with the webmaster on this one. Being a mustang doesn't necessarily improve your chances. We have a YN1 at our command with a master's degree and he listed: NFO/Supply/SWO, and didn't get picked up for OCS. It's a real inexact science, and personally, it may almost be easier...

    OCS Supply goodbye?

Johnyboy, You'll never know unless you try. I looked at the Supply info sheet recruiters give out, and it said a GPA below 2.3 was disqualifying, so it looks like you're still above it. Get some good recommendation letters, and who knows what will happen. Good luck.

    What to do...

The other thing to keep in mind for a lat transfer is that by instruction, you need a minimum of 24 months of commissioned service. However, getting into supply now may be tricky, because I read that the Supply community manager will endorse any lateral transfer out of the supply corps for...

    OCS pay question

slabrico, Your husband will pay for meals on the ship, but you still get the officer's substinence which is about 175. The navy won't cancel the pay when he deploys, he'll just need to cut the ship's wardroom a check for the crappy food. ;-)

    After OCS...

Flying Wonder, While the Navy does have a lot of fully funded grad school opportunities, the chances of you being able to get your PHD in Planetary Geosciences doesn't look good. Surface and sub guys can get masters while on shore duty at a ROTC unit or recruiting station, plus Naval Post grad...

    Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer/Supply ???

shunter, Feel free to private message, email or IM me. I'm usually logged into IM all day, (though I'm not always there), but right now I'm on a boat det and should return shortly. Click on my profile to find my contact info.

    Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer/Supply ???

Shunter, The reason recruiters can't find much info is because the AMDO community is only about 500 officers strong fleet wide. If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them for you (such as billets, career path, etc), I'm currently the Material Control Officer for an S-3 squadron...

    Interservice transfers?

Thanks for the feedback guys, Taxman, the reason I didn't distinguish between Marine and Navy commissions, is because the Naval Academy Commissions officers both into both the Navy and Marine Corps. Also, the reason I asked this question is because all the instructions I found regarding...

    Can someone enlighten me?

Doc, Basically, just the procedure on leaving and coming back in the service. My first choice is obviously to lateral transfer, what I'm wondering about is whether you can try to come back in with a different community, if there's an application process, etc. This is still 3 years off for...

    Interservice transfers?

Anybody know if interservice transfer from the Navy to the Marine Corps is possible? I'm not an aviator, I was just wondering if it was possible to get orders to TBS for Marine Corps ground. Thanks.

    NUPOC: Surface vs. Subs

Another thing... Instructor, NR Engineer, and NUPOC are all separate. You must apply to each one separately, you don't just throw your hat into the pool and get one. Instructor and NR Engineer are more difficult to get because you're not an unrestricted Line officer in the navy. You get...

    NUPOC: Surface vs. Subs

Johnmyson, Your reasoning to go surface because you'll see the sun now and then is a common one, and also a wrong one. Nukes are a few decks down from the flight deck, so unless you're an aviator or you work on the flight deck or in the tower, you won't see the light of day. A carrier is not...

    Is Supply for weenies?

For anyone going supply, Something some of my OCS supply friends have told me, is that since the supply school is six months long, you won't know your orders until near the end of supply school. Your performance influences your orders, and it's probably in your best interest to get a smaller...

1520s Who they are and what they do

Potluck73, You pick your orders from a set that coincide with the needs of the navy. Luck plays a lot in this, because when I selected, it was either AIMD on the Stennis, or VS-33. I picked 33, my buddy picked Stennis. I was in class 07-03, however, the guys in 04-03 could have had a shot at...

    Can someone enlighten me?

I'm currently an AMDO getting my package together for lateral transfer to the CEC. This is something I really want to do, but I figure if I can't get it by the time my commitment is up, I was thinking of getting out, using the GI Bill to get my Masters in Ocean Engineering and coming back in...

    ADVICE!!???

Wannabe, One bit of advice when it comes to college, make sure you finish all the ROTC requirements for comissioning, because there were 3 guys in my OCS class who did STA-21 and went to Univ. of San Diego for 3 years ROTC and didn't have enough naval science courses, so they got shipped out to...

    Is Supply for weenies?

Well, define weenie. To give you an idea, the supply info sheet that a recruiter will show you says that a GPA of less than 2.3 is a disqualifying factor. Needless to say, Supply is not the Nuke program. Unfortunately though, supply seems to be heavy in the junior officer ranks, so it may not...

    Application Question

Bravo14, Your recruiter sounds like a jackass. How can he not like to entertain question? He's a recruiter for crying out loud!!! Be more assertive and ask him for exactly what you're missing. If I had to guess, I bet you live a ways from a relatively large recruiting office. I don't know...

    How hard is OCS?

Palm Guy, Hardly anyone fails out of OCS. You have to be a major turd to do that. Most people who don't get through voluntarily quit. It's physically demanding, and you'll have to deal with lack of sleep. Not everyone finishes in 13 weeks though, to give you an idea, my class graduated 54...

Am I doing the right thing

palmettoguy, If you want to do a tour while gaining experience attractive to the civilian world, you should consider supply. There aren't any specific degree requirments, and you basically handle the business side of the navy. My recruiter also said that most people go in, do four years, then...

    holidays at OCS

You accrue leave time while you're at OCS just like you would if you were on active duty. 2.5 days a month. Yes, there is a two week break, trust me, the staff doesn't want to be there either. The way it works is, you go into a negative leave balance, but since you can't be commissioned on a...

    CEC Anyone?

I'm glad ginny is so enthusiastic about it, but I just wanted to clarify a few things. I'm currently active duty, and looking to transfer into the CEC. It's mostly shore duty, the only deployable unit being the Seabees who account for about 16% of CEC officers. Also, the master's is only free...
