    Civilian Maritime Tailhook Aviation

Boeing actually briefed this to the Navy. An Osprey can carry about 80% of what a COD can (internal). It can carry about half of what a 53 can externally, about 80% of the pax of a 53 (but at a speed comparable to the COD) So it makes a good 'tweener' platform if you needed to replace both...

Does that weight include the 'can'? I can't speak to the 60S, but in the F/H if you want to pick up 2400 lbs then you have about 2K (or less) in gas. (21,884 - 17.5 (dry weight) - 2.4 (engine weight) = 1984 lbs of fuel) Can you pick up an engine, yes. Can you transport it into Bahrain when...

    Civilian Maritime Tailhook Aviation

The S-3 was never envisioned as an organic tanker when it came to the fleet; the KA-6 had the role. When the A-6's went away, something needed to take over the job. Tanking ability isn't the reason the S-3 was retired, the ASW retirement of the Strike Group had more to do with it than...

VP and their misunderstanding of the word "preflight"

You pretty much are spot on about the reminiscing that will happen once VP transitions to the new airframe. When HS started transitioning to the 60F in the 90's we had to listen about how the Imperial Sea Pig (the H-3) won the cold war (and how the H-60 had all the problems and how the H-3...

    Civilian Maritime Tailhook Aviation

I know it can be carried in the cabin of a 53. There was a mishap in Bahrain in the 90's where a 53 was off-loading a Hornet motor and the aircraft lurched sideways. A crewman was killed when the motor crushed him against the side of the aircraft.

You may want to explain that to the CO of the CG I was on, it was forbidden to wear flight suits in the wardroom for any meal.

    I can't speak for a 53, but an H-60 can not vertrep a F-18 motor.

Echelon III vs. Echelon IV Commands

Long story short: "Echelon" basically refers to who is your boss. If you're Echelon 1 then you answer to the CNO directly. If you're Echelon 2 then you answer to an Echelon 1 Command and so on. All it means is that the command you mention has been moved down one spot in the Navy chain of...

Can you fit an aircraft engine (in the can) into a US-3? If not, we will still require C-2 (or new aircraft with ability to transport a canned engine)

    Civilian Maritime Tailhook Aviation

The Navy is looking to put more civilian mariners on ships. Right now they are on a few, like Mt Whitney and Blue Ridge, but the Navy is looking at putting them on Amphibs (in the engine room) in the near future. There is also discussion about merchant mariners on surface combatants. Lots of...

    ADM Stavridis writes

In my experience no one has ever "looked down" on another officer for writing an article for a professional journal. What 'seniors' get upset about is when a 'junior' launches an article that is basically venting about that particular persons hot-button topic. When someone picks out a windmill...

    ADM Stavridis writes

A lot of the issues may result more from 'how' something is said, vice what is actually said. If you write an article that comments on ways (in your opinion) to improve TTP for naval warfare, address changes to training processes, modify a career path or update doctrine, then it should (never...

Are there any EA-18 Growler slots for NFO's out of 86?

I had a JO in my last fleet squadron who was married to another helo pilot (finished HT's about the same time). The Detailers set them up so one was on shore duty and one was on sea duty right out the of the HT's. When the husband was finishing up his first sea duty and looking for shore...

MEDALS?? We don't NEED no STEEEENKIN' badges !!! *split thread*

You are correct, but the number of NAMs was based on your unit size. An O-5 command of under 200 people were authorized 2 NAMs per year. We'd usually use them for SOY or maybe for a well deserving E-6 who was going up for Chief in an over-manned rating. That's how it was in 1995 and before...

Flight suit redesign, what would you do?

One significant issue is that all the Services want their own camouflage utility uniform. Once the Marines went their own way, it became popular to have a service specific uniform. As for why we all don't wear the MARPAT, I have been told (so if this is incorrect, I'm sure a Marine on this...

    API and possible shutdown

I can't speak to what P'cola is going to do, but most discussions I've heard from the training and education folks is that military personnel will continue to report to work. Civilians will not be coming to work until the budget is passed or another CR is approved. I have no idea if API...

Flight suit redesign, what would you do?

We switched to the new "Air Force Flight Suit" (it's what we called it) back in the mid-90's. It was a 'fuller cut' through the midsection and had zippers on the sides, like pockets. They were roundly panned by all of naval aviation and within 2 years we switched back to the 'old flight...

    Helicopter License as civilian

I talked to a local helo operator here in RI about getting checked out and renting. It was going to run about $500/hour to rent once qual'd. That $200/hour figure is still steep but a more attractive way to build hours vice $500/hour. Good luck
