Congrats to all the FY12 DH selectees!!

As I've always heard, Detailers don't lie, it's just that sometimes the truth changes.

Congrats to all the FY12 DH selectees!!

Squorch, I will not defend anything the detailers are telling anyone, but the fact remains that historically speaking, the RAG has always had more folks screen for DH than VT/HT's. I've seen lots of briefs, including listening to CNATRA himself at NHA saying that the Navy needs to increase the...

Space Available AMC/MAC, and NALO flights

Transom has a web based service where you can check flights. It was on SIPR so I don't know if that's a show stopper for you. You could look up the status of any AMC or NALO flight. No info on space A availability, but you can see what's coming and going into an airfield

    Diabetes - Waiverable?

Had a squadron mate get Type 2 and could control through diet and he got a waiver. It then got worse and he was grounded. And as far as the Navy goes, it really don't matter what the FAA does. The Navy considerations are much more stringent (think eyesight) than the FAA.

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

If flights suits are not meant to be seen off base, then why all the push to standardize them? If it's a uniform, then it requires standardization. If it's just working coveralls, then who really cares what color T shirt I wear under it? Nothing says Naval Aviation to the general public like...

I was talking to this former Navy fighter pilot and Desert Storm Ace named Skeeterman... He said that I can get jets even though I'm 39 years old right now. Since he is going to write me a letter of recommendation and I REALLY want to fly and I'm not taking no for an answer, it's all but...

    HCS-5 Re-established

Since the HSL/M leadership is adamant that LAMPS will NOT fly overland if there is even the possible hint of a threat, there is a lot of training (unprepared LZ's, LZ tactics, defensive maneuvering, Etc.) that a typical HSL/M pilot has never been exposed to during his/her career that is required...

I kept my 3rd AE up for 15 years doing the take home test. There is an AQD for having a Engine or Deck liscence. PLUS if your liscence is still current, you can wear the giant chicken pin on your uniform! Doing the take home test was easy when you can buy the USCG question bank and answers...

HOW TO BECOME A PILOT IN THE NAVY

Keep all your options open. If you go ROTC, it is expected that you will major in some kind of engineering. The Navy actually tracks the number of folks in different majors. The Navy has expected percentages of folks in the different majors. You may get to major in other stuff, but expect...

    Submarine downs a Navy helo?

I have seen a Mk 46 EXTORP broach a good 30 feet out of a helo while at AUTEC after a hover launch. Since I've never heard this story from a helo bubba, I am disinclined to believe it, but after seeing what a LWT can do, I can only imagine what a heavyweight torp, like a Mk 48 could do...

    Submarine downs a Navy helo?

I have a submariner up here in Newport that swears that a sub launched an exercise torpedo that broached and hit a hovering helo. He can't remember a timeframe but says that it's mentioned in submarine school. I tried Google with no-joy. Has anyone else ever heard this story before? Thanks

Would a Civilian Aircraft Be Allowed to Land on a Carrier During an Emergency?

Long story short is no. The amount of time it would take to ready the deck would be too long if the aircraft had an emergency in progress. If the carrier was at flight quarters, I would highly doubt that the Commanding Officer would risk the lives of his flight deck crew allowing some civilian...

    Closed Field Ops @ Whiting

One thought to consider, if the field is closed and something happens (Class A) there is the possibility that the NAS could be singled out as a contributing factor. For example, the runway was not safe for ops, but since the field is closed, it's not a big deal. Now do you think an NAS CO is...

PAK-FA/T-50 makes its first public appearance

Since we've had the F-22 operational since Mid 2000's and have about 170 airframes, I'll disagree with your point. Depending on how you define 5th GEN, (stealth technology incorporated) you could make the argument that the F-117 which was operational in the late 70's was the first 5 th GEN...

Congrats to all the FY12 DH selectees!!

Since they just had a board to kick out a bunch of O-5's, I'd say that we can't afford all the O-5's we have right now. IMO you can't make the assumption that the selection rate for O-5's will be up sound 90% based on this years numbers. The Navy wll keep the percentages where it wants and...

    remember when helmets looked cool?

    Blowing The Tubes

Not as bad as trying to start the helos in the exhaust of the "six pack"! In the Gulf it would already be 100+ degrees and now add the exhaust from a bunch of jets! But when the ships blew tubes, the crap would settle over all the aircraft on the roof. Everything was covered with a layer of...

    Dumb questions about helos

These two units are in the Navy Reserves. The Navy Reserve doesn't "make" pilots, they have people who are already qualified naval aviators join the Reserves after leaving Active Duty. So, if you want to fly with HSC-84 or 85, then you will need to get into flight school through the Naval...
