Rotary Wing Roundup (Helos at work in Maritime Environment)

Much of that depends on the squadron. Some squadrons have looked to max out sim usage and are aggressive at scheduling. Others will only schedule sims when they absolutely have to, for example instrument checks and SWTP check rides where you need to "shoot" torps or Hellfires. It also...

Rotary Wing Roundup (Helos at work in Maritime Environment)

I will agree with the exception of the guys & gals in Japan. The helo folks out there are very "up" on their ASW. For the rest of the Navy it is an atrophied skill set.

Hornet pilot loses wings over...a videogame?!

If you are gonna keep flying a damaged/degraded bird rather than setting down in the water or doing a PEL in an uncontrolled area is a HAC call that requires experience. This is why those O-4's you were disparaging a couple of weeks ago are OICs, Level IVs and HACs.

I don't agree with a DH job being the shittiest jobs. I had a great time on my DH tour. My joint tour was complete pain. Most of the people were great (individually) but the perception of what is truly imporant and needs to be done right this moment is way off! I've never had to work a weekend...

Hornet pilot loses wings over...a videogame?!

I read something called the "shiny switch theory" once. The switches in the cockpit all have a matte finish on them when new. As switches get operated, they tend to lose the matte finish and get shiny. The vast majority of pilots who have flown the aircraft before you did not need to...

Consider this first, if the Navy just invested $100K in getting you a degree and the says "thank for your interest in national defense but we don't need you". Helo Pilots vs Bad Backs Account Vibration

Any helo pilot who's ever flown in body armor or has "years" flying helos can tell you that this is old news. The article even mentions that this is an old problem. The video clip was my way of commenting that the military is finally starting to acknowledge that there is a problem. IMO...

    Type of camera while deployed?

My advice is: 1. Get a small camera that will fit in your pocket/helmet bag. Carrying around a big camera is awkward sometimes. 2. Don't go super expensive so when it gets broken or wet, you aren't out too much $$$.

Especially when folks would look at how long it took them to run and the would base the number of pushups and sit-ups on what "category" their run time would put them in. It didn't give you an idea of an individual's fitness level, it just grouped folks based on their run times.

F/A-18E vs F... benefits of one over the other?

During an exercise you say thay if you've been 'notionally' shot down. Since emergencies can still happen during training, you only use MAYDAY for an actual emergency. When it's a scenario shoot-down (like the event leading to a CSAR-Ex) then you broadcast RIGHTGUARD so folks understand it's...

    DLI/Foreign Exchange

It depends. Most exchange tours will result in either a 1 of 1 or a NOB FitRep, so the exchange tour is not exactly career enhancing. Most exchange tours are during your first shore tour when your contemporaries (who are you competition for promotion and selection of command) are at the RAG...

How many ships does the Navy have?

If memory serves; the sonar on the FFG failed so many OPEVALS, they actually changed the design specs to allow the ship to enter service. (I've never seen that documented, but have heard it from a few different reliable sources). I agree with a caveat. Ships cost billions of dollars now...

How many ships does the Navy have?

So should the United States take a 'threat based' approach to defense or a 'capabilities based'? If we go threat based, then you assess what's out there that could possibly threaten us and you base you capabilities (and planned capabilities) on those actual threats. If we continue with a...

CAN they? Yes, anyone CAN be an RMC. SHOULD they be? That's the question that should be asked. In my expirience, RMC was usually filled by the VF guys since it was viewed (at least in the discussions I've had) as a role similair to FAC(A). Now I guess it would be the 18F guys who have taken...

How many ships does the Navy have?

Totally agree with mission creep going into ship design. I remember the LCS being sold as SUW, ASW, MIW capable because of technology... That starts to get expensive quickly!! Unfortunately, the problem here is us (Big Navy) and what we want when we build/buy ships. We want all our vessels...

How many ships does the Navy have?

My thought was if we need more ships (number of hulls deployed) for presence, do they all need to be top-end capability vessels? How about a high/low mix of capabilities. One DDG or CG with a couple of USCG MEC can do an effective job at counter piracy and other Maritime security type...

How many ships does the Navy have?

So the answer is building more ships? I bet Adirmal Roughead never thought of that... It sounds like the author has an axe to grind about diversity and uses the ship building issue as additional fires. I base me opinion on the fact that he makes no actual recommendations. The sHip building...

F/A-18E vs F... benefits of one over the other?

If CAG is an NFO, you can bet that an F is leading the strike... While I will agree that having an extra guy in the aircraft provides some additional capability, IMO, the leader of the strike was more tied to the individual pilot (in an F-14/F-18 airwing) than which platform may be more...

Not implying guilt or innocence of the CO in this case, but what does the Commodore do with a CO who just got arrested for DUI and before he relieves him? You would have to assume that he got a Navy JAG (or someone on his staff) to make some calls to find out what evidence the cops/DA has...
