    REQUEST: Good aviation/military books

More recommended reading. NORTH SAR by Gerry Carroll - Great book about Combat SAR H-3 pilots in the Viet Nam War. Also highly recommend Ghostrider ONE by Carroll as well, this is a story about A-4 pilots early in the Viet Nam War. Carroll writes as someone who has been there and uses great...

    HS squadrons

In HS you get LOTS of Plane Guard. At the same time, you are the helo asset for the Carrier so you get lots of Log runs, flying the Chaplain (Holy Helo) as well as all the missions addressed above. As we like to say "Jack of all Trades; Master of None".

    Landing Helos

Most of the ship take downs I've been involved with started with the helos transiting over water at 100-120 knts and about 20-40 feet. Pop up at the last second and deploy the ropes. I know the C2 bird will generally start out high, but the troopships have usually come in very low.

A couple of interesting ejection pictures

I think the pilots stripped naked prior to ejecting... that will give the SOBs on the mishap board something to think about!!

    Fly-On Question

Usually the only time that loaded planes via crane are: 1) They were shipping aircraft over to the front, so they used a carriers as a transporter. (During Korea they did this alot with the aircraft they broke out of storage from WWII.) 2) The plane is broken.

When you're 50 years old and watching you kids get married, you may wonder how your life would be different if you took that chance. You say you come from a Navy family and were enlisted, so you know what sacrifices you'll have to make. I choose the road less travelled and it has made all the...

    Purple Anti-Smash Light?

by definition every UAV squadron is very little flight time... If you sitting at your desk "flying" and you skipper can still walk up and task you, then you aren't flying.

    Push-ups at 90º

Even since they took your PRT score off the FitRep (early 90's) who cares how many push-ups you can do? P/WS is they only thing that matters. Then again, if you drink enough beers and you get a belly, you won't have to break 90 degrees and have your belly touch...
