Recuiters Forced to Leave UC Santa Cruz

What annoys me is that these people went to a career fair not to look for a job/internship but to prevent others from finding one in the military. Being against a draft is one thing, but being pissed because others are interested in voluntarily joining the military? Whatever dude. Looks...

Thanks for the advice, One more question

My point is just that being pro-rec'd doesn't equal being selected. There was a poll a while back about what happened after pro-rec and some people answered "non-select" I've said this before, I don't ever remember getting a call saying I was pro-rec'd, but it sounds more like a status...

    Lateral Transfer between platforms?

Most of the guys I know that turned it down were planning on getting out anyway. Come to think of it, most of them were NFOs. I've heard more than a few of them say they'd transition if they were pilots. I guess going from the right seat of the S-3 to anything else would be a downgrade in...

    Seat and Reach

Yeah, I forgot about that. When I was doing over commercialized (c'mon, do you really think orange, green and purple belts really exsist?) Tae Kwon Do in Middle School/High School I could lock my fingers and put press my palms to the ground from a standing position. I don't do that any more...

    Chances of selection for OCS?

Yeah, when I interviewed, a comp sci major with a 2.8 (and a few D's) got selected. I had a 3.1 with C's and C+'s peppered throughout my transcript, and still made it to the interviews (which I glorioulsy flubbed). Unless it's gotten a lot more competitive, a 3.0 in tech major pretty much got...

    Lateral Transfer between platforms?

Yeah, some of the S-3 guys are turning down transitions (one of our NFOs got a super hornet slot) because the prospect of doing back-to-back JO sea tours with a stop at the new RAG doesn't seem too appealing.

yeah, the navy will give you more than enough per diem to cover travel, and you may as well take it. Leaving earlier in the week is a much better idea, and driving is a good idea, because it's nice to have your car there.

Thanks for the advice, One more question

Well, he's not accepted yet, he's just pro-rec'd, so I'd say this might be a hurdle on the way to final select. Then again, it might not be.

    Drawbacks of the Military

I guess the bottom line here, candidate, is that if you can't commit to something where you won't be able to throw coffee in your boss's face and say "I fvcking quit," than the military (aviation or not) probably isn't for you.

    ultra thin/flat ribbons and medals

I don't remember any of the priors wearing the ultrathin ribbons...I'd play it on the safe side and go normal. None of them had the "bling" either, so I think you're ok there.

Add our 3 scores and divide by 3??

OCS requires Excellent Low, and I think USNA does too, because they have to do the run in 10:30...which is X-low for age 20-24

    Any Good Credit Cards

This is what I've been doing since my freshman year of school. It's a no brainer, you don't need to carry cash, and you can rack up rewards for things you gotta buy anyway (i.e. groceries). Having your cellphone and cable automatcially billed to your cc is pretty bueno too.

    The civillian sector $$$

On a sub, you're the only supply offiicer, and thus the department head. You'll have senior SKs working for you. That's more impressive than having TAD Airmen from the squadrons cleaning staterooms or SHs who ring you up at 7-11 working for you. I've been on a carrier, 30 seems high.

AF vs Navy ROTC, BDCP, etc

BDCP pays E-3 with advancement to E-4 if you get dean's list in consecutive semesters or refer someone. I think you can make it up to E-5 combining both, but you'll be bumped to E-5 when you graduate and thru OCS. Also, BDCP is good for college students who decide to join the Navy. ROTC is...

    too late for nrotc?

I don't see a problem with it...any way you slice it, you're only asking for 2 years of your education to be paid for. I know ROTC guys have to apply for a fifth year to have it paid for, and then they owe an extra year on thier commitment (of course, for aviators, this is a non-issue). I'd...

That's odd. I remember GEICO (even with their military rates) was the same $$ amount as my USAA, but I got more coverage with USAA for the same price. Love the USAA Only thing worse than PA police is the Penn State campus cops.

    Mobile Security Detachments

Right. And along with that, you can expect to spend your days and nights in CVIC while underway, but hey, what's impressive is how the intel guys shove 8 or 9 people ("can I pull up a chair?") at a table meant for 4 in the forward wardroom.

If your superior's are A-holes? That's a bonus of the military...either you or your boss will rotate within a year or so, unless of course you check in together. In the civilian world, if you have a sh!tty boss, you're stuck for longer. You don't necessarily get to take 30 days a year, but...

    On the fence

Just to jump in on this, an officer has to apply for inter-service transfer, and there's a lot of paperwork that goes into this. You won't get transferred against your own will, this is something you must actively seek out. To give an example, with the S-3 going away, the JOs have to basically...

What do the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus, and the latter applicant have in common? They don't exist. I don't know anybody who can work and volunteer 50-55 hours a week and still be a full time student pulling a 3.25, let's not exaggerate things. Sorry, had to throw up the BS flag there.

    Interview For PLC

When I went to the "interview" (way back in 1998) it was basically an info session, watching the PLC video, and getting a bunch of stickers and pamphlets. I could be wrong, but I don't think the Navy pays for storage. If you're married, your dependants can stay where they are and draw that area's BAH. Otherwise, the single guy in the Navy tends to get the shaft for things like this. As for driving, 5 1/2 days is more than enough time for you...

    401k

The military has TSP (www.tsp.gov). It's not as good as a 401(k) because there isn't any matching, but it's good if you're not a disciplined investor, because it takes it out of your paycheck before it hits your checking account. Also, alot of companies have a 401(k), but you can't retire at...

Is this somthing I need to mention?? (Police Record)

Yeah, the Navy views pot as the one acceptable drug in your past, and that's smoking it. Basically, I would think your roommate having been in possession isn't a big deal, like others have said, be up front about it. Now, if you recreationally hit the crack pipe, that's a whole different...
