    Sta-21?

DO NOT ENLIST IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY IN COLLEGE AND YOU WANT TO BE AN OFFICER. Find an officer recruiter, STA-21 is a commissioning program for active duty sailors. If you're currently in college, find an Officer Programs Officer to talk about BDCP/OCS. One of my buddies who is an S-3 pilot...

    Ground Squadrons for USMC?

The only Marine Aircraft I've seen on a carrier is the F-18C (single seat). The Prowlers are land based, and I believe harriers (single seat) go on Amphibs (could be wrong on the last one)

    Question? Need Advice

Tell your recruiter, and try to go back and explain the situation. This may or may not DQ you because from what I (think I) remember, pot is pretty much the only drug you could have done. Ecstasy and Crack are off limits.

Do you Have to an CE degree?

No, they use the term "engineer" liberally. The reason the CEC requires an engineering degree is because only 15-20% of the officer billets are with the Seabees. The other two major areas are pulic works and contract management. CEC JOs only get one seabee tour, and more often than not start...

Next fall would be a good start. Since you're a frosh, I'm assuming your 2.8 is from one semester. It sounds simple, but get your grades up, that can never hurt.

    Advice for BDCPers/NUPOC

The main point of advising you to look for summer internships/CO-OPs in the summer is because BDCP gives you the best of both worlds: a commission without the Navy crap in college. USNA guys lose touch with the civilian world when they ship off for plebe summer. I had an NFO from the boat...

    Final Select!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm In

I concur with eddie that it fills spots a fiscal year or two in advance so they're not scrambling to fill quotas late in the FY. This is especially important to SC/RL designators because OCS is the primary commissioning source.

    Advice for BDCPers/NUPOC

All right, reading that thread about guys chomping at the bit for their first paycheck, I thought I'd just throw this out there. I've met some quality people who did BDCP, and some real douchebags. So if you've recently been picked up for BDCP (congrats, by the way) or if you've been in BDCP...

What degree should I get to become a pilot?

I used to be. Thank God I left that behind. It's "aviation related" but it's a lot of paperwork and administrative BS. It's also an unkind place if you're not prior enlisted, and you can't select it out of ROTC unless you're NPQ for unrestricted line, or you get a DUI and wreck your car and...

    Final Select!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm In

The guy wasn't BDCP, he was NUPOC. NUPOC is basically BDCP on steriods, it's only Nukes, and you get the money even if you're out of college. Basically, the Navy need nukes, and it may seem like a lot to sink E-7 pay into a college kid, the Navy takes it out of his ass after he does a three...

    Final Select!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm In

That's the problem with BDCP...going to OCS is a step down in your lifestyle. You get E-3/E-4 pay for doing nothing during BDCP, then at OCS they take away your BAH (if you're single), bump you up to E-5 and make you jump through a bunch of hoops. There was a NUPOC in my class who was in the...

    Couple Questions....

First of all, I'd say having a 3.7 gives you a warm fuzzy, but the Navy doesn't have GPA cutoffs and what not, especially when some majors are harder than others. The Navy and Marines will both let you know that you'll have a flight slot prior to heading to OCS...I would assume that the Air...

Keep in mind, college is your chance to wipe the slate clean. No one will give a sh!t what your grades were like in HS if you do well in college.

Junior in High School, Interested in Career as Fighter Pilot.

Something to note from that list is how many (large) public schools offer good engineering programs. A lot of people think you have to go to an XIT or XPI school for a good program, which simply isn't the case.

Junior in High School, Interested in Career as Fighter Pilot.

Exactly. When I was 16, I was worried about SATs and if I was gonna get laid after the prom (I didn't), not what I was gonna do for 10 years after college.

Freshman in highschool- wanting to become a fighter pilot

I don't know how it works at your high school, but at mine, only our final grade at the end of the year counted into our GPA (avg of 4 qtrs and final exam)...so if you got C's for the first two qtrs, finishing with 2 B's and a B on the final should get you a B-, or a B if your school doesn't do...

    Usn, Usmc, Usnr?

I'd talk to both recruiters. You might have a better chance with the Navy, because they have OCS classes start every 2-3 weeks, whereas the Marines are smaller, and literally have 3 OCC classes a year.

Junior in High School, Interested in Career as Fighter Pilot.

That applies mainly to enlisted recruiters struggling to meet quotas. Officer recruiters are dealing with college grads or those pursuing a degree. They know you have other options besides the military to pursue, so they're not going to try to sell you as much. My recruiter would ask me after...

    "General" Degrees

I understand that everyone has to take the calc, physics etc, and wasn't trying to cut on english and poli sci. My question from the previous post was asking if general science was taking say Bio I, Chem I, Ocean I, etc, instead of majoring in Chemistry by taking Chem I, II, O Chem, etc.

    VX Squadrons

I'm done being bitter about getting orders to China Lake...OK, that's a blatant lie, but anyway, in my mind the main reason this base exists is for the two VX squadrons here. I've been told that they're test squadrons, but I don't know much more than that. Are the aviators who take orders...

    "General" Degrees

My cousin graduated USNA with a degree in Oceanography, and he said the Gen Sci guys would only show up in his basic courses, and not the later sequential courses. He described it as "taking classes until you graduate" Are the General degrees accredited?
  37. Thisguy

    "General" Degrees

Can any Academy guys fill me in on what "General" degrees are? I've noticed some boat schoolers with General Engineering degrees, and it seems odd to me because USNA doesn't list that as a department, and I don't know of any other college that offers that type of degree.

Navy joins the pack and adopts Digital Camouflage

I didn't see anybody wear wash khakis for SDO last cruise. They usually go with a different color flight suit. We used khaki, another squadron used black, and some just used the green with a red SDO badge.

One more question... change of rating

I don't think that should be an issue. STA-21 doesn't restrict what you can select based on your enlisted rate. The only exception to this is that if you want to go CEC through STA-21 you have to be a seabee, but obviously, that doesn't apply to you.

    Can NFO's pilot jets??

Yep, and that opportunity is gone for new FOs. Would the NFO ever get a chance to recover on the carrier? No. Would the NFO get some stick time so the pilot could walk to the back of the jet and take a piss in his piddle pack? Yes.

    Question for Navy Wives

I work with alot of civilians here in the ROICC office. If you're a project engineer or contract specialist you can work for the government on practically any base. Stripping is a popular field as well.
