Getting your commission: The condensed version

You have to be smoking crack to go to USNA after you already have a bachelor's.

Bringing your SO with you to OCS?

This is a little off topic, but the next CECOS class starts Sept 11, and it doesn't look like you'll be done with OCS by then. This kinda makes things a lot more unpredictable. What they'll have you do is "stash" at your ultimate duty station until the next class in January. The reason...

    Phun?

That is so true. Especially with something like cruise, all you remember is the fun port calls, not sweating your nuts off for a few months in the gulf.

Bringing your SO with you to OCS?

That's a good idea if you'll be in P-cola after commissioning, but seeing how it looks like he's CEC, it's even a worse idea to move his G-friend out there for 12 weeks, then pack up and move to his ultimate duty staton/CECOS.

Bringing your SO with you to OCS?

You could get married in Vegas so you could draw BAH. Seriously, she'd be better off living with friends and family wherever that may be, because she's going to be on her own in a strange town not knowing anybody. That's kind of an odd deal.

    Basic Questions

I would talk to a recruiter in the fall of your sophomore year. The process takes a bit, and that should set you up to screen for an interview in late fall, or more likely, in the spring. Basically, you'll need all your paperwork, and then go to MEPS. NR conducts interviews once a month...

    Basic Questions

Nuke is a different beast from BDCP. It is a program called NUPOC. The first step is to screen for an interview, if you go to the interview, you better be sure you want it, because if you're selected at the interview, you're in. You can't really back out at that point. They tell you right on...

    Officer Selection Board Address

Deciding to put in application or wait.

Since there isn't a cap on how many times you can apply, you really can't hurt your chances by putting a package in. If you get a "no" you'll know where you stand and apply again.

    Ensign Rank

A generous offer, but keep in mind OCS guys are forced to buy thier stuff down there, it's included in the price of uniforms.
  11. Thisguy

    Fleet Squadron Uniforms..

You'd be safe with one set of long-sleeve wash khakis. The only use of them in our squadron foir aviators was to stand Boat O duty in port. SDO was stood in a khaki flight suit.

    Funeral Uniform?

SDBs (ribbons, not medals) are authorized year round. But yeah, civvies are fine too. As for chokers at a funeral, have you seen anyone in a white tux at a funeral before? There's your answer.
  13. Thisguy

    Phun?

OCS gets kinda fun during Candio Phase. Can't speak for the new OCS, but it really depends on the type of people in your class. The most fun I had (excluding liberty) was just talking and kidding around with guys after dinner in the rooms when you could relax a bit.

OCS Big 4 memorization in audio format

He was looking for it in an audio format. Plus the DEP book had a few of the words wrong, and that matters when you need to know the big 4 Verbatim.
  15. Thisguy

OCS Big 4 memorization in audio format

In no particular order... General Orders of a Sentry Code of Conduct Chain of Command Enlisted/Officer Rank Structure of the Navy and Marine Corps You could always record yourself reciting these, unless you're like George Costanza and can't stand the sound of his own voice.

    Vision question!!!!

It was -9.00, correctable to 20/20. I wouldn't be able to funciton if I was -9.00 after correcting, because MEPS listed me as 20/800.
  17. Thisguy

    Vision question!!!!

The -2.75 is called your diopeters, which has to be below -8.00. You're fine.
  18. Thisguy

    Vision question!!!!

    If you're outside +/- 8.00 you'll need a waiver, I got -9.00 waived for non-aviation

    OCS Video

Did they modify this to be just an OCS video (vice AOCS)? I remember the Macklin first person stuff, but the video I watched had a chief that was yelling at them to.

    Portable GPS devices

I'm in the market for getting a GPS for my car and was wondering if anyone had any good or bad experiences with any particular model, and if getting a higher end one is really worth it. Thanks in advance for the (useful) input.

    Bring final transcripts to OCS!?!

Just to chime in. I remember seeing the transcript on the list of "sh!t to bring." I brought mine...and never took it out of the envelope. Besides...verifying that you actually graduated from college at OCS is a little late, isn't it?
  24. Thisguy

    I'm an Ensign!!!!!

Congrats...being an Ensign is cool for a couple of months, then you start thinking, man, I could really use that JG pay.

    LTJG Shoulder Boards

Back to the original topic: Picking up LT in your first squadron fleet tour and giving your JG shoulder boards to the ENS Intel O? Cool. Soliciting on a website to buy JG shoulder boards for $16 and shipping (a savings of about $12)? Cheapass.
  30. Thisguy

    Should I apply?

Unless something's changed, it should be E-3...upon graduation you'll be bumped up to E-5 until you commission regardless of referrals/deans list.
  31. Thisguy

    LTJG Shoulder Boards

...or tax for that matter. Y'know the guy..."my burger was $9.95, here's a ten."

    LTJG Shoulder Boards

Right...but Credit Card Roulette is fun...unless you lose at Morton's in Singapore, then you're just F'd in the A
  33. Thisguy

    Should I apply?

No, but PRK would...as long as your diopters aren't greater than +/- 8.00

Denied by Navy. Do I have a shot with the Marines?

I don't doubt it. But be careful to generalize the entire Navy's recruiting force. Your office may have sucked, and that's too bad.
  35. Thisguy

    Life on a carrier

That would just make too much sense. We have to pay a mess bill every month...it varies depending on how many days you're underway (they don't charge you in port unless you eat on the boat and are honest enough to write it down on the log). I know for the troops, they just take away...
  36. Thisguy

If you have less than a year left of school or have already graduated, you simply apply for OCS through an officer recruiter. If you're graduating in 2 years and applying for BDCP right now, you're looking at FY 08 slots, if you're graduating this may and applying, you're looking at late...

In the breakdown, I think Midrats is like 25 cents of the $8.25 a day you're charged. That's a fcuking steal for two egg and cheese sandwiches and fries.

    Working While in BDCP

You can still work summers. That shouldn't be a problem. If someone in the Navy can work a second job, why can't you?

FSA is only received after 30 days of separation. I'm not sure what you were trying to point out, I was simply saying that you won't be directly compensated for storage. If you're single, you won't receive BAH because you're residing in gov't quarters for the duration of OCS. If you're...

What does the Navy do with vanilla CIS majors?

If you're a designated supply officer (3100), your degree should not dictate what billets you fill. That's what the Supply school is for.

Denied by Navy. Do I have a shot with the Marines?

I don't think applying is ever a waste of time (unless you're completely uneligible because you're missing a leg, or a raging homo). You won't know unless you go for it. Good luck!

    Questions abotu PRK

seriously, most people who are 20/30 don't realize it, and probably have no reason to see an optometrist. At 20/30, you could just wear contacts/glasses when you fly.

Updated list of things to bring?

Yes, you can use an electric razor (at least you could way back in 2002)...I wish I had known that, because I switched over to a conventional razor. As for tight collars, I would keep one or two white T-shirts to wear for inspections, you might get yelled at for wearing one with a looser...
