    Dress Khakis

Probably need a khaki shirt that buttons all the way up so you can wear a tie. Don't think a wash khaki shirt would cut it :) On a positive note, it's another opportunity to wear shoulder boards and really get the $40 worth out of them.

    OCS integration

I know there isn't rifle drill anymore, but if you drew the short straw and were in the front row, you got plenty of attention. The one time we were reversed, none of us who were usually in front got called out...what a shocker.

    Tax Question

I hear people say all the time "Yeah, but I get it all back." My retort is, "Yeah, and I don't have to fvcking file state income tax." That usually shuts 'em up pretty good.

    Navy paid PRK

I think the limit is +/- 8.00. That's the vision limit for NFO, and I was looking into getting PRK to lat xfer to NFO when I read something saying that you must be within those limits pre-op for PRK to qualify you. In other words, people get PRK to be eligilbe for pilot, but if you're outside...

    Tax Question

To go along with Brett, I'm sure you know that Texas has no state income tax, so changing your residency to TX would be an easy solution.

    Order?

There doesn't seem to be a set order at the top. I've done PRTs where we did pushups first, and I've done some where we did the curlups first. Run, however, is always last.

    Buddy System???

Well, the question here is what's more important: having the same OCS date, or how you're going to spend the next 4 (PAO) to 8 (NFO) years of your life?
  9. Thisguy

    If not Pilot, NFO?

SWOS is no more. The Navy took a 6 month course and made it something like a 5-week course you go to after you get your SWO pin.
  10. Thisguy

    If not Pilot, NFO?

That's actually a good idea. Flip a coin, and if you're disappointed with the outcome, you know which way to go.

Question for officers who have been in the fleet for a while

Man, I would hope you weren't trying to impress any men.

Question for officers who have been in the fleet for a while

No...in a squadron's Material control and QA, I was concerned with what kind of job my sailors did, not what their PT scores were.

Question for officers who have been in the fleet for a while

What the hell, I'll throw my hat in the pool. Concur with above, although if your command has mandatory PT in the mornings (like our squadron did), it's a sh!tty thing to do to not show up knowing that you won't be punished (unless you've got a legit reason, like crew rest). 1. In a...

    OCS integration

Sounds like a pillow fight waiting to happen. Just kidding, but yeah, the whole bathroom situation for the females is way better than the guys. It got to the point where I didn't bother showering after morning PT because I knew we were just going to get killed a couple of hours later. Oh...

    Phun?

When we were candios, we got to go to the gym in our free time to play some basketball. That's about it. Oh yeah, there's the Staff/Candidate softball game at the end too.

I need some help PRK question

I noticed it. I also know that +/- 3.00 is NOT the limit. I know guys who were at - 6.00 and got it done.
  19. Thisguy

I need some help PRK question

This whole thing seems odd...why didn't your doctor correct your vision to 0.00 or close to it? That's the point of PRK, to correct your vision so you won't need to wear glasses or contacts, not to shave off a diopter.
  20. Thisguy

    Just a few STA-21 Questions

That's a pretty unforgiving deadline given that a lot of schools don't notify students until April of the following year. A lot of larger state schools have rolling admissions, which is a sweet deal, because not only will you find out sooner the sooner you apply, but it's often easier to get in...

I need some help PRK question

Yeah...an enhancement sounds like it's in order, but honestly, if he only corrected you -1.00 and -1.25 it doesn't sound like he did a good job (it's possible for vision to regress after surgery). Just curious, what was your Pre-op prescription?
  22. Thisguy

    What would you do?

Unless something's changed, you only need a Satisfactory Medium...maybe even probationary on the In-PRT at OCS. I don't recommend this, but I'm just saying we had a weakling not roll because he "banged out" 37 pushups. That being said, I wouldn't stress a Good High. After all, the out-PRT...

    How does NROTC work?

Yeah, but they take it out of your ass once you're commissioned. :)
  25. Thisguy

    How does NROTC work?

You need 4 years and a day to rate O-1E when you commission, so BDCPer's don't rate O-xE pay (unless of course they really were prior enlisted). Bottom line is, you can crunch numbers all you want and say which one is worth more, but your goal should be to get a commission any way you can.

what's up with using firefox on this site?

I acutally already do that...my question was if I could import my address book to thunderbird. When I downloaded thunderbird, it only gave me options to import from Eudora and Outlook, not any web mails.

Now that the whole IE thing has been sovled, is there a way to import settings from web-based mail to Thunderbird?

    Drugs

I was told by my recruiter (back in '02) anything besides pot is an auto DQ. Sorry.
  29. Thisguy

    How does NROTC work?

You are correct. Since BDCP is basically an enlistment and not a scholarship, you keep the GI Bill. I know a guy who went to school on the GI Bill, got picked up for BDCP, and was working part time...needless to say, he wasn't hurtin' for cash.
  30. Thisguy

    Sta-21?

I think he's referring to enlisting with a bachelor's degree. For example, applying from the fleet, you'll need an endorsement from your CO, and you aren't going to be able to get that fresh out of boot camp.

    Applying to OCS

I'm not sure what a letter will do, but stronger ASTB scores can never hurt. Especially since it's the on thing you can change. Your GPA is in the past, nothing you can do about it now, but if you can significantly boost your scores, it'd help.

    Seafood in Milton?

I don't know off hand, but your local JAG can hook you up. I'm not kidding. Out here in China Lake, more than a few sailors have been busted for...ahem...statutory. The thing is, state law is enforced, which of course is 18, so the UCMJ does no good here. Any legal beagles that can explain...

    Question

That's good. Something that may affect your decision is what minimum score the school will accept for credit. For instance, I got a 4 in AB calc which was good enough to place out of calc I, but some schools are snooty and will only grant credit for a 5.

    Question

Which AP Physics exam did you take? Taking AP classes is money, I wish I worked a little harder in high school, (because between BC Calc and AP Physics, there's the potential to place out of Calc I, II, and Physics I, II )then I coulda slacked that much more in college, and that's really what...

Getting your commission: The condensed version

Yeah...who wants to go to USNA and be treated like crap after you already have a bachelors? That's what OCS is for :)
  47. Thisguy

    OCS application process

If you want to go to OCS, I would not ship out to boot camp on July 5. Once you're in bootcamp, you won't be able to say "see ya, I got picked up for OCS." It doesn't work that way.

If that's your profiency, I would mark "fair". In my mind, excellent is being fluent, and good is being able to carry on a casual conversation.

Bringing your SO with you to OCS?

CEC guys don't typically do OHARP. They'd rather you be at your duty station at that time learning something. Obviously they won't send you overseas, then bring you back, but I know someone who had orders to Keflavik, and he didn't get OHARP, they stashed him in Norfolk instead.
