    The great NWU's

Remember it took the USS STARK getting hit by a missile before the Navy figured out that wearing 100% polyester clothes (CNT) and plastic shoes (corframs) was a bad idea. So the fact the Uniform Board didn't worry about this (too focused on SDK and CPO cutlass) that it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Are individual awards getting watered down (ie a NAM for a Det)?

You're kidding, right? That paperwork was due to the Strike Group staff 180 days prior to awarding. You need your 'Cruise NAMs' submitted before you even deploy!

I've had to do MedEvacs for a couple of pregnant sailors who got some kind of complication during pregnancy. I remember one was a bladder infection (that was 7.5 hours in the saddle and three fuelings to complete) and I can't remember what the other one was for, but it was not what you would...

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery...part DEUX

I was at Subic Bay International, formally known as Cubi Point NAS, in 2009. Saying it was in rough shape would be greatly understating the material condition of the base. FedEx as based out of there, but they were going to pull out to start basing in mainland China. Otherwise, there was...

On the TR in 95 you could not buy chewing tobacco, but they had cigarettes. The Hue City (BATGRU CG) did not sell cigarettes but sold chewing tobacco. The AW's got rich running one tobacco item to another over the course of a deployment.

I realize this book is fiction, but the author is a retired O-6, who's son was a Navy-turned-USCG helo pilot so my point may be based in fact. In it, the author wrote that sailors could be kicked off a ship for drugs, but the command had to gap the billet. So, you could get rid of them, but...

During Katrina, I was told that the JTF Commander had issued General Order #1. I had an Army Colonel ask me if I knew what that meant. My response was an Ensign salute and "It's better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission?"

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

Bounces are touch and goes. As for "greased-on landings", I think I used the word "sporty" previously. As a helo bubba, I do not claim to be able to land a big-wing aircraft. However, from my office I have seen some landings that I would say are definately not "greased on".

The other runway (14/32) is 5980 full length. Unfortunately the last 300 feet are the intersection with the concrete portion of 10/28. So, we are redoing that concrete portion first and having 10/28 (with displaced threshold) as 6000 feet usable for a couple of days a week so FRC and the VP...

Otto, NOLF Whitehouse is an FCLP runway with a tower and crash shack. There is zero infrastructure like hangars, taxiways, parking aprons, or fuel. It was a sarcastic remark.

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

Totally agree; the runways at Jax have needed to be redone for a long time. The issue is we have one usable runway, when you shut it down to work on the runway, you've effectively shutdown the entire East Coast VP fleet. Fortunately we can use Cecil as "det space" for the 13 months it will...
  19. helolumpy

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

The issue is the number of landing of aircraft of a greater weight. Right now Jax can land anything, in fact I have a 747-400 coming in this week. But the P-8 is heavier than both the P-3 and the C-40 so you now have a heavier aircraft that will be doing bounces on a regular basis. I...

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

No, there is NOT a plan to extend the runway. There is an unfunded project in 2015 that will add 1000 feet of overrun, not runway. This overrun will go from the departure end of 28 1000 feet and will tie into the parking apron in front of Hangar 511. If we add 1000 feet of runway, then we'd...

First flight of the P-8A Poseidon and all things related to transition

NAS Jax is having to replace it's main runway in 2013 because it's not strong enough to support the weight of the P-8. We presently have 11 inches amd need at least 14 inches to support the P-8. The entire project will last about 13 months so for the duration all fixed wing squadrons will base...

    MH-60S with a M197 20mm cannon!

The range at Clemente (where I've dropped at least 20 torps) is so scripted for Torp-Ex quals that it is the rare exception for a crew not to get a qual. (PCO Ops is a completely different story!!) My argument is simply that a crew shooting one a year does not really train us to do our job...

I would not call a crew that drops one torp per IDTC proficient and that one torp/IDTC is about fleet average. I think you'll agree that Hellfire requires more dexterity for the pilot to get it off the rail successfully, you don't have to just enter a few settings and then wait for the right...

    Budget Cuts and Flight/Simulator Training

Just to add fuel to the fire, bases are taking personnel cuts that are resulting in reduced hours that fields are open. This will drive the Navy towards more simulator time since a sim can run 24/7, but very few fields are still 24/7.
