The fact that police departments don't say that as a united front across the nation is why we have riots right now. And to me, this is mainly a leadership problem.
That may be why you have protests. You have riots because of a number of reasons, all of which are unacceptable. Closest relation to police brutality protest is that people riot due to pent up frustration and anger. So they are acting like two year olds.
While I agree with you that should be done, I believe the unions are a big reason why they are hesitant to immediately fire someone. The same reason when an airline pilot gets caught trying to fly with alcohol or drugs in his system he or she is not immediately fired. They are usually put on leave until the system runs its course and it is proven that they did something egregious. The union can't help them at that point.
The reason for the handling of pilots in your example is because Alcoholism and Drug Addiction are diseases and the ADA protects the employee and limits the actions an employer can take. Same applies for teachers, nurses, truck drivers, all employees, union or not.

This is why Brett dismissed you as part of the problem. Instead of critically assessing why people are rioting, you dismiss the behavior as childish and not worth any further thought.
Why are we conflating the people who are protesting with the people who are rioting? This is very disingenuous. Some may be the same people, but the reporting up in my neck of the woods would not indicate all or even most of them are.

Granted, some media types seem bound to (also disingenuously) call the rioters "protesters," but still. Critical thinking, people.

@Spekkio , I can know why people riot and not approve of it. Are you saying it is ok to riot if you are agrieved over racism? Anyone that believes that is more problematic then me. That my friends are the low expectations too many people have for minorities. Not expecting they can control emotion and be respectful. You are making excuses for criminals and demeaning the good people who peacefully protest and still respect other peoples life and property.

I'm a white dude but I definitely know about it happening in the Marines.
I had a black Marine friend I went through training with. We were separated for our first duty station but he later PCS'd to mine. He told me about some really shady shit that happened while he was there.

This is a quote from him:
I was treated differently in Japan by my own SSgt. And i know for a FUCKING FACT that it was for the color of my skin. The very same one told me i was “faking” my depression and suicidal thoughts for “attention” The same one that came by my room looking for me to make sure “(name redacted) isn't hanging from the shower curtains” I remember I was sick AND STILL went to work and go accused of “faking” But when somebody with a lighter complexion was sick, he never even second guessed their situation. Stop acting like you don't see this shit happening around you EVERYDAY!

This was verified by two other Marines I know from the unit he came from.

Let's review...
  • The guy getting harassed and illegally detained and cuffed should have been the one to deescalate.
  • The guy getting harassed and illegally detained and cuffed should have told them he was an FBI agent.
  • The guy getting harassed and illegally detained and cuffed should have used more polite language in the presence of the police.
  • The guy getting harassed and illegally detained and cuffed shouldn't have tried to teach these corrupt cops a lesson by exposing their corruption.
Did I miss any of the nuance in your post?
By saying this, you are, again, taking the side of the cops, who we already know had the wrong guy. They’ve already made a serious, potentially life threatening error in judgment, and yet you reflexively give them the benefit of the doubt. This is the exact problem of bias that I am highlighting.
We do now know they had the wrong guy; do you truly think they (the cops) knew that at the time, and were just looking to find a black male to arrest? This has been covered enough in the previous few pages though... I personally saw a lot more escalation from the handcuffed individual; it seemed like a staged "GOTCHA". And yes, I myself, and I imagine you yourself, would have shown our ID's. It has nothing to do with race (that part of it, I do not mean to say that blacks are not unfairly targeted by police actions). If a police officer attempted to arrest me saying I fit the description of an Alex, I would show them who I am rather than ask my friends to record a video of me resisting while cussing them out. Maybe the Navy has gotten me used to bending over :).

I still agree with all that Floyd was wrongly murdered, FWIW. But making videos like these intentionally causing confrontation don't really help in my humble opinion. Whenever they are made.

NOTE: I quoted your whole post, not just the best portions.

Be careful, if you embarrass Brett too badly in an argument he will retreat to his safe space and add you to his ignore list.

Yup, I’m all for knocking the looters and rioters on the head like seal pups (they knew the rules of the game when they chose to play) but would risk my life to protect the protestor’s constitutionally guaranteed “right of the people peaceably to assemble”.

But what about the virus? How do you feel about people’s right to practice their religion? It’s ok to force churches to have online services but a zoom protest is out of the question I guess.

I'm OK with churches meeting up. Large crowds in a closed internal space especially without masks is dumb based on the science as we know it today, but there it is.

Frankly, I'm OK with holding MAGA rallies. Pack them in, no masks, lots of yelling.

I’m 100% certain there will be an insane COVID spike, and I worry for the health of the peaceful protestors and police.

And people still have the right to practice their religion.

If church services can be banned without infringing on peoples right to practice their religion, then crushing peaceful protests is fine too. They are free to protest from home.

Church services aren’t banned.
